Training Camp Report - Day 1
Posted by: Micah Hart on October 2, 2007 at 4:23PM EST
And we're off!

After Media Day on Monday afternoon at Philips, where the Hawks players spent a couple hours doing interviews, taking photos, and showing off their new duds, the guys got down to official business today with the start of training camp and the team's first practice.

Though they don't allow staff to observe all of practice, they did let us in for about the last half hour or so, and it was enough time for me to form some impressions. To wit:

- It appears the team is serious about getting out and running this season. I know that has been talked about in these parts over the last couple years, and for whatever reason never really implemented, but based on the early signs, this team looks like it is making a commitment this year. During a portion of the time I was in there, the team went through several exercises designed to set them playing in an up tempo style, and afterwards Coach Woodson addressed this aspect specifically, saying the team is planning to run, but that it will take discipline and fitness to do so.

The guys looked fairly ragged doing the up tempo drills, but I attribute that more to beginning camp than anything else. Bottom line, the guys have a month to work on getting in shape and learning to run a truly up tempo offense, and the fact that they are moving in that direction is a very positive sign for those who believe that running gives the Hawks their best opportunity to win.

- Joe Johnson is becoming a more active leader. One of the critiques of the team in the past has been a lack of leadership on the part of Joe Johnson, the team's best player. It's not so much that Joe hasn't been a leader, he has just always been more of the lead-by-example type. Based on today, it appears he is making a much more concerted effort this year to step up vocally as well, as he exhorted his teammates to give more effort on several occasions. This is also, in my opinion, a very positive sign.

- Al Horford looks like a stud. Yes, I realize it was only one practice (and only 1/6th of it at that), but watching him play you can't help but be impressed. In the span of a couple minutes in one full court scrimmage drill, Horford spun on the baseline for a layup, knocked down a 15-foot jumper, and raced back on defense to block a lay-up attempt. It's very early, but count me as someone who thinks this guy can make a meaningful contribution to this team sooner rather than later.

- The team is taking precautions to avoid the injury bug of a year ago. I spoke to Coach Woodson after practice, and he talked about how this year the team is doing one practice a day instead of the two-a-days we've seen in years past. Basically, this is to keep the guys fresh and keep their bodies from breaking down. It will allow the guys to go hard for three or so hours, but then have the rest of the day to rest and recuperate before doing it again the next day. Another smart move by the coaching staff, if you ask me.

After practice I spoke with Acie Law about his first day on the job, and he was predictably excited. He seems pretty excited about the notion of pushing the pace, and if you've seen what he looks like with his shirt off, it's no surprise that conditioning is not one of his main concerns. Law is going to face an uphill battle for minutes out of the gate given his inexperience, but so far he looks comfortable on the court with the rest of his teammates, and that is a start.

We have just heard a miracle, THE HAWKS ARE PLAYING A UP TEMPO OFFENSE, THANK GOD. I was just wondering why not do it before. This team is very youthful and the leader of the team, Joe Johnson, is used to playing up tempo with the Suns. It seems like we have finally turned around as a franchise.

TLue can do so much for the new guys. I saw him doing some great coaching on the floor during a Wiz game in DC last spring.

If Jamaal Tatum makes the team the Hawks will make it to the playoffs- BAR NONE He is a winner

Once in awhile you come across a player who really commands a crowd, and there is no one who does it better, than Jamaal Tatum. The moment he steps onto the court, there is a quickness that electrifies the game, the team, the crowd, and he knows how to bring the best out of the team players. The sky is the limit for this guy.

we are a good team, acie law and speedy claxton are great for spreading the floor in a spread up tempo offense. Josh Smith fits into this offense even better. The only bad thing is we did not do this earlier. Better Late than never.

Go Hawks!

OK, we picked up a couple of good guys at the draft. That's what you get for finishing last anyway. But how many guards/short players do we need to accumulate?

We got:

T Lue - old and slow

Speedy - disappointed us last year

AJ - Also old and slow

Law - new

Stoudamire - short

Tatum - short

So we have 6 players 6-3 and shorter.

The only scoring threat is Joe Johnson whose also the only one who can shoot. We lose him, we lose our scoring power.

As far as the tall guys go, we got:

ZaZa - which the team often doesn't pass the ball

Salomon Jones - who will be sitting most of the season

Batista - also will not play

Lorenzen Wright - too old

So that leaves us with Marvin, J Smooth, Childress, and the new guys.

We got all our hopes tied in the two draft picks. What if they don't deliver? If they deliver by February, maybe the team will get someone good. If not, back to the draft room.

Not a very good outlook in my opinion. Someone new should buy this team (all by himself).

We have quick guards that can all score and distribute. That makes for a running team. But on defense remember we have to face teams like boston, orlando, miami, and the pistons who can all run too; they also have good back-to-the-basket talent as well.
Hopefully Zaza, Salamon, Al, and Williams will really D-bo some folks around. And maybe we will see smith with his back-to-the-basket sometimes.

I agree with Lee Bingham, Jamaal Tatum is a winner! As for Sean on the height of the Hawk's players, he has obviously not seen Jamaal Tatum go up against guys alot taller than him. There is something to be said for quickness and skill, and Jamaal has plenty of both!!

I am from SIU and to know that Jamaal Tatum is on the training camp roster really excites me! Jamaal Tatum is short, but his quickness and his ability to play the game is unbelievable, plus his defense is second to none, sorta like a Bruce Bowen type player. Good Luck JT.

I like our roster but I think we need one more big man down low we should trade the William brothers along with one of our point guards, not Acie and a future draft pick for Pau Gasol. A starting five of JJ, J Smooth, Horford, Gasol and either Acie or Speedy at the point is a playoff team and a contender for the east. Alos J Smooth should be used like Melo is used in Denver a small foward who gets the ball in the post and is given the ball to move off the dribble, he has all the skills of Melo and he will be an allstar in no time in the right system.
