Summer Camp Round-Up: Day 2

The second and last day of scrimmaging was yesterday afternoon at Philips, and unfortunately, the big story of the day was injuries. Wayne Simien pulled up lame with a hamstring injury, and apparently it was severe enough that he will have to miss the RMR. Jeremy Richardson also went down during one of the scrimmages, limping off with what appeared to be an ankle tweak, but he will still make the trip to Salt Lake City, and I'm told should be good to go by Monday.

Obviously the injury to Simien was disappointing (to me anyway, I still believe that guy has the talent to be an NBA player, but health is clearly a concern for him), but nevertheless there were some other bright spots to note.

Randolph Morris showed some excellent touch around the basket, hitting several short jumpers during scrimmage time. I think Morris is a pretty skilled offensive center - I believe the knock on him has always been defense and determination. No doubt the Hawks could use his kind of low-post presence on the offensive end though, so it will be interesting to see if his work the past few days will convince the team to give him an offer. He and Kwame Brown have been both been working out, and I'll admit I'd be quite happy to give either (both?) a chance at a roster spot if the price is right.

Another guy who impressed me yesterday was Brian Chase, a PG out of Virginia Tech. Chase is one of those guys whose been hanging around the fringes of the NBA scene for several years now (he's almost 27), a bulldog of a player who makes the roster players look bad if they slack off because of his hustle and determination. Chase stands only about 5'10", but gets where he wants on the court and gave Speedy Claxton all he could handle during the games yesterday.

I got a chance to talk to him after practice, and was impressed by his understanding of his place. He has been through this for the last several years, joining teams for summer league and training camp in the hopes of landing a coveted roster spot (which he did grab once, spending the first seven games of the 2006-07 season on the Utah Jazz roster without seeing any game action). He knows exactly what coaches are looking for out there, and I think he demonstrated a lot of great skills in leading his team in scrimmage. He was very controlled, running the offense and barking out instructions to his teammates if they were in the wrong spots (which happens pretty often given how little time these guys have to learn the sets).

Atlanta's roster is pretty crowded in the backcourt (especially if Speedy returns to active duty), but I would love to see this guy get another chance somewhere else if not here.

Speaking of the Hawks backcourt, I also spoke to Acie Law after practice to get his thoughts on his second season of summer league action and on stepping up as the team's leader. I asked him which players were impressing him in camp, but of course he wasn't going to call anyone out (in hindsight, maybe I should have grabbed him before he hit the locker room where everyone else could hear what he was saying). He seems very confident, and I anticipate great things from him at the RMR.

The Hawks made their final cuts after the practice was over (click here to see the final roster), and will head to Utah later this afternoon after a final practice this morning.

We won't be with the team in Salt Lake City, but hope to have good reports from people on the scene nonetheless.

I hope the Hawks get Randolph Morris. I was a fan of his game at Kentucky.

Hey Micah, could you please explain to us what's the deal with Josh Smith. I mean I was feeling good about everything, but ESPN said last night that SI.com reported that Josh Smith said he is not interested in returning to Atlanta as long as Mike Woodson is coached. Please Please Please enlighten this issue for me and the other fans

*coach

Posted by: Bad Coach Woody on July 17, 2008 5:00PM EST
woodson is the worst coach I have seen in a long time. How can Phoenix, Dallas & Detroit get rid of winning coaches & we keep a coach who is a loser & has proven he cant improve players ie Soloman Jones , Acie Law, Super Mario West. Mario is a stopper on D, so why didny woody play him against Sam Cassell ? He is terrible !

Posted by: jibran on July 17, 2008 5:18PM EST
i dont care what you say about woody, yeah it was dumb to not get avery who would fit our offense perfectly but woody has improved our record every year that he is on the seat. its not about woody it was about billy knight, that was the issue thats been resolved. take things one step at a time. were still young so dont be so quick to write whatever you feel is right or wrong.

Posted by: hawksfan12 on July 17, 2008 5:22PM EST
they should fire woody hire avery johnson, sign j-smoove get a big center.

salim stoudamire couldve been a great bench player and woody never played him....in the last minutes of game seven he hit like 3 threes in a row

Yeah, what's really going on with JOSH SMITH? How will the Hawks game plan changes if he leaves? How come Woody gets so many chances? What are the Hawks doing to improve on last year? These and other questions we need anwers if we are to spend our money on any tickets?

Posted by: hawksgirl on July 17, 2008 6:18PM EST
can someone tell me what j-smoove said about not coming back if mike coaches is true or not PLEASE!!!!!!!
cause if josh does not come back because of woodson a lot of hawks fans are going to be disappointed. atleast give a detailed explaination of why!
if josh cant handle a coach being hard on him why move to another team. he will have a problem every where he goez if thats the case.
he needs to be a "man" and suck it up and anyway from what i have been seeing he may not find a better deal anywhere else..
josh needs to grow up because if he leaves he will show how imature he is.

I think that was sad the statement Josh Smith made on sports center if a player make a statement like that to the general public that means he put all his personal feelings before the team concern do you really want a player like that on your team. I did like Josh Smith but he has shown his true colors. I say sign and trade will you have a chance to possible get quality players Marcus Camby is already gone.

Posted by: Anonymous on July 17, 2008 6:37PM EST
It would be crazy getting rid of Woody the last time I checked Josh Smith did not own the hawks organization cut your lost and move on while management have time to get two or three quality players Joe Johnson made a good point these guys have to be ready for training camp I know Josh Smith is OK but he is not the best if he was someone would have signed him be real about it he can be replaced sign Josh Childress.

Posted by: Anonymous on July 17, 2008 6:48PM EST
Come on now it makes no sense coming down on Mike Woodson remember he got those guys to the play off Josh Smith is selfish and wants to have his way trade the man while their is still time to get quality players sign Josh Childress believe me Smith will live to regret that when he go to a team were he is the fourth or fifth option and believe me it will happen because he is not a good enough outside shooters and he gets out of control a lot thats why no one is standing in line to sign him.

I completely agree with hawksgirl and the three anonymous' underneath. The only thing I dislike about Mike Woodson is that fact that he let Salim get away and our other benched players such as Mario. I love Mike Woodson as our coach, and apparently so does the rest of the team. Josh Smith needs to quit pouting just because Mike Woodson chooses to punish him when he acts up. That's his job! And if everyone other than Josh was pleading in Mike Woodson's defense when his job was on the line, shouldn't that make Josh sit back and really think about who's right or wrong?

GET RANDOLPH MORRIS!!!!! get rid of woodson so josh smith will stay, and woodson sucks anyways...get morris

Posted by: Anonymous on July 17, 2008 8:01PM EST
Hawks there are still some quality player out there sign Josh Childress and cut your loses Free agents that will fit with the team are Biedrins,Okafor, Brezec,Delfino Luol Deng and Ben Gordon and maybe a team with luxury tax issues we have some time but the clock is ticking.

Posted by: Bad coach woody on July 17, 2008 8:23PM EST
Thanks Matt. At least someone is on track. These bone heads let Patrick O'Bryant get away to the Celtics. Nelson was an idiot not play him. He is a bonafide 7 footer, with much game. Coaches coach, GM's get players. woody had really good players, ie j smoove, solo, & mario. Im not buying season tickets yet.

Sign And Trade Josh Smith And Stoudamire For A Talented Big Man Like Tyson Chandler And Sign Morris And Kwame Brown

Posted by: BigBoi on July 18, 2008 3:36AM EST
It's simple: it's almost between Josh and Woodson. They don't understand each other, bad relationship, Josh Smith told it clearly.
But Sund made a great move by keeping coach Woodson. I mean, I'm also one of those Hawks fans who are embarrassed to see Droopy coaching our young guys. It's terrible, he's got the worst charisma I've ever seen as a coach. How can he be a vocal leader and a booster when you talk with such a bad voice and the eyes of a sleepy cat? We all know that, as a coach he's not that good.
But Sund was right by keeping him here. jibran you're absolutely right. Because he has improved our record every year, because he knows our young guys better than anyone else. Because he has improved with them throughout struggles and Play-Offs. And only for that, you have to keep him here, just one more year.

After that, if we can get an old guy, respected from everyone, with great charisma, who can make great speeches to boost them, who has the experience of the post-season, and has wonderfull relationship with each guys on the roster, it would be peeeerfect.

Any of you knocking Josh Smith are idiots. He's the only Hawk worth watching. If they get rid of him, which would be another lame move by this organization,I'm through watching them.

Are you kidding me? What about Joe Johnson, what about Al Horford?

Posted by: JB on July 18, 2008 11:37AM EST
I am a season ticket holder & I saw Josh's attitude start in the middle of the season. He can leave but no coach is going to let him do what he wants to do.I would love for him stay but if he is doesnt give a 100% effort because he does not like the coach then he is no good us

Posted by: the kid on July 18, 2008 5:54PM EST
WHAT THE F$%@. jOSH SMITH IS SO ATHLETICALLY TALENTED. What we need to is
1. sign j-smooth and j-chill
2. get emeka okafor
3. get r.morris
4. get tyrus thomas
THAT WAY THE HAWKS CAN BE AN UNSTOPPABLE DOWN LOW TEAM AND RUN AND GUN TEAM.

OH YEAH WHO IS JOSH SMITH TO SAY HE DOESN'T WANT TO COME BACK IF WOODY COACHES HE DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A CHOICE.

Posted by: I.dOT on July 18, 2008 9:55PM EST
I hope Josh Smith can let this coach thing go to the side and re-sign with the Hawks and build on to what they did this year. Also sign Randolph Morris. I can just see this line-up for the Hawks.

PG-Bibby
SG-Johnson
SF-Smith
PF-Horford
C-Morris

I think if the Hawks get Morris, they should let Josh Smith (if he re-signs) at his natural position at SF and put Al Horford at his natural position at PF, the Hawks can do some real damage in the East.

Posted by: hawksgirl on July 19, 2008 1:55PM EST
exactly. i would love for josh to come back but he is not the only good player on the team. yes he will be missed but if he leaves he will regret it because like JB said no coach is going to let you do what u want to do. when you do something wrong a coach will yell at you to get it right. other coaches may work differently as well. Josh will realize that what he is thinking is wrong and that he is still young and learning.

Posted by: robert on July 21, 2008 7:49AM EST
why are the hawks still procrastinating on signing th josh smith.we cannot afford to lose one of the best defenders in the league.every time he went to the bench other teams scored at will against us.if he leaves the hawks i see us back in last place next season.

Posted by: hawksgirl on July 21, 2008 9:02AM EST
true robert but the hawks arent procrastinating its josh. he is the one who doesnt want to come back

Posted by: robert on July 23, 2008 7:52AM EST
that was one report on espn.
there was another report in the ajc where he said he wanted to come back to the hawks and it was after woody was resigned, which i think was also a hugh mistake.he is the most boring ,lackluster coach
i have ever seen on a basketball court.if he doesn't get alittle more animated and excited about the game on the sidelines ,how can he expect any one else to.teams tend to take on the personality of their coach.
