So Long Royal, We'll Miss You
Posted by: Micah Hart on September 19, 2007 at 1:24PM EST

Today is a bittersweet day for me (and not because it's International Talk Like A Pirate Day). Royal Ivey, a backup point guard (and sometimes starter) for Atlanta the last three years, is now officially an ex-Hawk after signing a one-year contract with the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday.

First things first, I am thrilled for Royal. I knew his time was most likely up in Atlanta - with four point guards on the roster (five if you want to include Salim Stoudamire, but not sure if he counts) with guaranteed contracts, it was going to be tough for him to find a spot. And, given his relative lack of playing time, I feared this would be the end of the line for him in the NBA (not that there isn't a good life to be made playing overseas), so I am happy to see him landing on his feet on another roster.

Still, I am sad to see him go. As a University of Texas grad and a fierce supporter of all ex-Longhorns (except Chris Simms), I have watched with great pleasure as Royal grew from an overlooked recruit coming out of high school to a contributing member on an NBA roster. Though he never got extensive playing time in any of his three seasons here, he was a practice court warrior and a coach's delight, always giving max effort no matter the situation. Plus, I could always talk Texas sports with him - who am I going to do that with now, Acie Law? I still haven't forgiven him for this.

Anyways, I just wanted to take this opportunity to say, good luck Royal. Here is hoping he finds a good fit in Milwaukee, and prolongs his career not only another season but several more after as well.

I will miss Royal Ivey, he is a great defensive talent, who I am certain will get a chance to spread his wings in Milwaukee. I am looking forward to the Bucks making thier way to Phillips on 11/28, my family will be the fans holding the yellow sign saying "Welcome Back Royal !", to which he will flash that endorsement worthy smile.

When Lue and Speedy went down last season Royal should have ran the point instead of AJ no disresepect to the man. I am very happy he is still in the league. He is going to be a difference maker in Milwaukee. The 3rd year is the charm for Ivey.

Hate to sound harsh, but

finally the worthless pg is gone

we need to make room for talent.

TY DeAndre, he was worthless, as I see it, 1 down 1 more to go at the PG position. All Royal Ivey did was take up Joe Johnson's gatorade. We are a playoff contender, and he is not, so he had to go.

On a side note. I love the Hawks' draft choices. I really like Law's game in College. But now I need to see Acie bowl to reassure me. Mike Conley Jr.'s has great hands.

We have Staudamire, Law, Johnson, and Claxton, not to mention Lue, who can all run the point. Ivey will get a chance to actually play, backing Moe

Yes it sucks that he is not on the Hawks anymore, but I look at this as a good thing because he will get more playing time at the point. Also will get to show people what he has in store.

Ive waited a long time to finally see the hawks back in the playoffs. I think this could be there year. Its good to see royal get picked up by another team. The hawks are a much deeper and better team. The only option was to let Royal go. I wish him all the best in the future.
