Q & A With Flip

A busy day in the Hawks offices today, with the signing of Flip Murray and
Zaza Pachulia appearing on CNN to talk about the conflict going on in his native
Georgia right now (more on that in a bit). While I was out covering that, my
cohort Jon "Newbs" Newberry got a chance to chat with Flip about coming to
Atlanta. Here's what he had to say:
Hawks.com: What drew you to Atlanta?
Flip Murray:
I have a familiar background with Rick [Sund] from when I was in
Seattle. I had a chance to come play here with a young team on the rise, they
took the world champs to a Game 7, so there's a lot of talent here. I like
team's style of play - they get up and down the court. All of those pieces fit
together, and add in my previous relationship with Rick, it just all came
together.
Hawks.com: Have you talked to any of the guys on the team? Do you have any
previous relationships with any of them?
FM: I see Marvin Williams in North Carolina a lot, and I chilled with
Josh Smith a little bit last year in Cleveland during the playoffs. I've been in
the league a lot of years and know a lot of guys, so I don't think I'll have any
problems fitting in.
Hawks.com: The Hawks have lacked guys who can create their own shots in
the past. Is that something that you see as part of your role with the team?
FM: Definitely. I had a conference call with the team when we were
negotiating the deal, and I got a chance to talk to Coach Woodson. I asked him
exactly what role he was looking to fill, and he said he was looking for a
combo-guard, a guy who could create his own shot and make plays happen on his
own. Hearing that opened my eyes and made the decision that much easier for me.
Hawks.com: You mentioned the team likes to get up and down the court -
does that suit your style of play best?
FM: That's been my style since Day 1, since before I even got to high school
and college. In Seattle that's what we did, they wanted us to push the tempo and
that's what we did and had success. In Cleveland we got up and down a little
bit, but Detroit was more of a slow it down style. I don't know if that fit me
as well. But I do like that style, and I think Woody is going to let us do that
and make things happen.
Hawks.com: Have you spent much time in Atlanta in the past?
FM: I have. I live up in North Carolina, so I've gotten down here a
few times outside of coming to play here. I don't know it too well, but I know
the places to be - and the places not to be.

Flip murrey is a great player. I live in indianapolis where he played for the pacers at the end of the season, and i wish we would have kept him, the dude can score some points.

I'm lovin this pick-up!!! With Flip, guaranteed to go-off offensively, Joe Johnson job, as a closer, just got easier. This up-graded back court is sure to pose new problems for the opponents. Defenders will have to pick their poison. Ok Woody, this year, there is NO Excuses!!! YOU GOT YOUR PLAYERS (they are matured with good mix), YOUR NEW CONTRACT, YOUR NEW GM, YOUR CRAZY FAN SUPPORT!!! NOW GO GET IT DONE!! IT ALL ON YOU!!!!!!!

That's a great move now go get a center trade bibby and marvin and to get that u have to give up something but we will be better this year maybe a six seed .

With this pick up of flip murray maybe the hawks can sign another big man or trade for a big man the hawks can be a 4th seed in the east. I don't want to hear the east is getting better because it still the east and not the west. See the hawks finish being the 4th seed no worst than the 6th seed. Mark this down people.

im proud of the team. they making great moves in the right direction. theyre not going trade bibby though. at least not until acie gets better in the regular season. a vet big man would b perfect for them as long as the guy can run. the team plays better when they run & gun like golden state

Flip is a good player (also if he has not much basket' IQ), but I believe that Acie and Mo could be better... I wish that the 4th position is possible in the Eastern!

All these are good points. But to me the biggest advantage of getting the likes of Flip & Mo Evans is that makes our bench THAT MUCH DEEPER. Now Joe can get a decent amount of rest without killing himself, night after night, playing 45+ min.

Ronald Murray is the pride and joy of Strawberry Mansion (Phila., PA) Basketball and will be a huge asset for the Hawks...I am happy to see him get a chance to showcase all his skills and trust me he has things in his game the NBA has not seen yet....Atlanta is in for GOOD highlights...smile...

question! If star nba players can get u to buy a pair of $125 shoes, and benefit. why cant they speak on the election? are they out of touch with the real world? its just a question. Whatever happened to the cassius clays'? The guys at the 1968 olympics? The bill russells'? Using a God given talent to make a difference. Or are WE really out of that era? The ones that are buying the merchandise, dont even participate in the voting process. Someone please make me understand!

Mr. hawk That is an interesting question. You make a valid point and timely as well. Maybe this new generation isn't as politcally conscience or socially connected than the Ali era. I realized with the internet and mass media we have today, makes my statement a contradiction. But there lies the problem. These new communication outlets produce more spectators than active participants. The new mentality is why get involve when you can watch the event on HDTV or on youtube. It's sad but true. The couch potatoes are massive today compared to Ali era.
Furthermore, the idea of using sport celebrities to encourage and influence continue to happen today but the impact doesn't translate. Sir Charles Barley was interviewed on CNN at the DNC and weighed in his support is an example. Also, I remembered Micheal Jordan public endorsing Bill Bradley for U.S. president during the 2000 primary. Bradley was unsuccessfully. See this link: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1355/is_12_97/ai_60041430
However, I make these views with a caveat: Never underestimate the human spirt when pushed to the limit. The revolution will not be televised.

what do you think of soloman jones? do you think that he will be able to contribute this year? are we going to make any more moves this year? i really like this team, but i think that we need one more key player.
|
|
Posted by: The Truth on September 27, 2008 4:03PM EST
I think Soloman contribution depends on Woody. Since Woody has a 2 year contract window and a new GM, he will be pressured to utilized more of his talent. His GM will demand it. However, since Soloman did not participate in the summer Rocky Mountain Revue, he did not help his cause in Woody's mind. But because he has bulked-up to 250 lbs with a wing-span over 7-foot he could be called upon in match-up situation. He could get more playing time if he spell Josh. He will see far less playing time if he is a back-up center because of Morris. Since the clock is ticking on Soloman as a Hawk, I expect him to be very aggressive this year when he get his opportunity.
With a tight budget, I think management are going to roll into the new season with what they have and evaluate things at midpoint. If a "fire-sale" player (with the right fit) hit the market before season start the Hawks will be tempted to make a trade. Usually this is rare. We have already given up a draft pick for the "Landlord" bust, I don't think we are ready to do it again. Otherwise, we don't have any expendable assets that's tradeable.
