Pretty Quiet In Atlanta As Draft Approaches

It's been pretty silent around these parts the last few weeks, with the only
real news being the hiring of GM Rick Sund and subsequent re-signing of head
coach Mike Woodson.
With the NBA Draft taking place this Thursday, I find myself in the
heretofore unknown position of not having any real work to do for it. That is
because (in case you just decided to start paying attention to the Hawks and
didn't know this) we don't have any selections in 2008. The first-rounder went
to Phoenix to complete the 2005 trade for Joe Johnson, and the second rounder is
now with Sacramento as part of the price for Mike Bibby.
Who knows? We may end up with business on Thursday, as I'm sure Rick Sund
will be exploring all his options like any good GM would do, but as of now it's
all quiet on the home front.
There is some news to report today, and to be honest, I have no idea if it's
good or bad. David Andersen, the former Hawks 2nd-round draft pick, and a guy
who was rumored to be in the team's plans for 2008-09, has apparently decided to
take advantage of the Euro's superiority to the dollar by
signing a three-year contract to play for FC Barcelona in the Spanish
League.
I won't speak for our basketball ops people, but this was certainly a
surprise to me. However, no matter how solid Andersen's rep is in Europe, I
still have no idea how well his game would have translated to the NBA. It became
pretty clear over the last couple years that it was going to take a sizeable
deal to get him to come overseas, so it's entirely possible this turn of events
has saved the club several million for a guy who may not have been that good. Or
maybe he is awesome and we'll never find out, who knows?
In other news, when new management arrives it usually means a shake-up of
basketball staff, and that continued today for the Hawks as
Harold Ellis left
to join the Pistons organization as an assistant coach on Michael
Curry's new staff. He is the second coach to take flight in the past week, as
David
Fizdale joined the Heat early last week as well. I am sad to see them
go, but the gigs were a step up for both of them so I can't blame them for
taking off.
As I said, I don't expect much movement around these parts this week, but
should anything arise you'll be the first to know about it.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE !!! 1 - Do not trade any of our current players. 2 - Please learn from the Atlanta Braves and do not try and outsmart established general managers with winning franchises, as WE will only come out on the short end of any trades with them! 3 - Or better yet, we could learn a valuable lesson form our departing general manager (Mr Billy Knight) and do not make trades, regardless of who they offer. 4 - Our young players are much better, than anything we will get in return !!! Everyone is very proud of what this team accomplished in 2007 and are looking forward to an even better year in 2008 !!!!!!! Please keep our current team intact !

Although the Hawks barely made the playoffs last year, they beat great teams all year and took Boston to 7 in the 1st round. This is definitely gonna boost their confidence coming into next season, and it gives them playoff experience. Now the organization needs to keep the team together, because this team has great chemistry and it can only get better if they keep their players. So we need to resign JChills & JSmoove!! If we can pick up a big man, great, but if we can't, the Hawks are still a great team. And honestly, I'd take Horford in the middle over a guy like Elson. You see what happened to the Suns. The got Shaq, granted, an old Shaq, but they got Shaq and they got knocked out early. The Hawks just have to run. That's their stregnth, and a weak big man won't help. Plus someone has to sit..Bibby/Law, JJ, Marvin, JSmoove, Horford..who would you bench?

Marko Marvin Williams trade bait. Its because of him we re forced to use Horford at the 5 instead of the 4 (his natural position) the man is only 6'10. I kind of agree with Dentist although I would keep ZaZa and trade Salim Stoudamire and Marvin Williams for Sam Dalembert. And if can use more then a 7 man rotation and start using 8-10 players we could challenge any team in the league.

this was the funniest thing i saw on youtube:
LosAngelesLakers4Eva (3 hours ago)
kobe bryant has proven himself that he was a loser after the finals i can translate that to a trade its time to trade kobe hes been on this team for 12 darn stressful years u know hes starting to become old now at age 30 we just gotta trade him right now so we can get a young talented player for our future if we trade him when hes like 36 nobody would want him I bet so nows a fine great time u never know lets trade kobe now to the hawks for a young talented al horford.
LosAngelesLakers4Eva (3 hours ago) Al horford who really is a great player he has a really good future ahead of him and he can rebound the basketball like dwight howard but u can compare al horford to tim duncan al horford is the next tim duncan for real man he will hes just gonna get better every year al horford can lead us to 4 championships like tim duncan has done with the spurs u never know when u get this guy now al horford is better then kobe lets trade kobe bryant to the hawks for al horford now please!!

I wouldn't trade big Al for the whole Laker's team if I were in charge!

I'm J. Smith number 1 Fan but if he acts ridiculus with his contract i say move him. Offers to consider send him to Portland/Detroit Smith for Aldridge and their 13 pick. Package pick, ZaZa and Marvin to Detroit for Prince and Wallace.
New lineup PG-Bibby, Law,Speedy(Retires) SG-JJ, Chill (Resigned) SF-Prince, Jermemy PF-Horford, Wallace C-Aldridge,FA Kwame
Then at deadline package Wallace and Bibby for future considerations plus they both will be expiring very attractive to other teams like San Antionio, Phoenix, Dallas. We pay alittle more but lose nothing defensively or offensively in fact we get better pay alittle more but come out of east and maybe even contend all these guys play defense and can score read this Sund. I was for Horford over Conley and Yi last year and gave explanations and comparissons this team would be great for years and matchup with any one. Check last years archives owners. So lets get active.

Unless Joe Dumars wants to get fired he would do that trade ZaZa and Marvin to Detroit for Prince and Wallace No way that happens Dumars is not that stupid

Ben,it was Zaza, Marvin and 13th from Portland they begin rebuilding and get rising player in Marvin and can package both their 1st rounders and move up maybe they can ship pieces to Miami for MARION
Pg-Stuckey Sg-Hamilton,Affalo Sf -Marvin,Hayes Pf-Marion,Maxiell C-McDyess,Ratliff, Zaza
Plus Dumars wants to seperate from Wallace still very competive team younger with veteran leadership with Hamilton and Marion
Miami Pg-Billups , J-Will Sg-Wade,J. Cook Sf-Rick Davis, Draft#2( Mayo) Pf-Haslem #13 C-Zo,(Draft)#30 Koufos or Hibbert G-Town Center for Zo to teach They'd be competive to in east with Wade ,Billups Mayo and healthy Zo good for all four teams

I think the entire team should remain intact, with the exception of Speedy Claxton. A trade of any players would be a huge mistake. Al Horford did a great job at center last season. I am happy with the starting five that we had last season. My only wish is that the bench gets more playing time and both Joshes get resigned.

ok some of you are being kind of rediculous...why trade marvin williams, our top pick a few years ago? He's a tall young guy who unlike most big men has a shot which could add another dimension to the team, maybe not as a starter but he would make a great role guy...i agree another big man would be good to give us more size in the post...but wallace? Detroit would not make that trade for zaza and marvin....i say keep our same roster and try to sign a big man in free agency...but def do not get rid of any of our current young players, they all have potential to become great players

|
Posted by: Carlito on June 26, 2008 2:42PM EST
Well im not happy we got Woody back... but i say hurry up and resign both of our Joshes! If we can get rid of Zaza and Marvin for a big man then do it... if we cant its not big deal they both are still pretty good players. I think we should definitely give more minutes to our bench. I dont care what you do with Speedy just get rid of him!

It is incorrectly stated that Harold Ellis, was an assistant coach for the Hawks. In fact was a very pleasent member of the Atlanta Spirit, and I wish him well.
It is also incorrect that David Fizdale left this week, in fact he washired by the Heat a couple of weeks ago, reference nba.com. Coach Fizdale was and is a prodigy in the realm of NBA Coaches, he will be missed.
I would also like to know what is going on with Herb Brown & Greg Ballard, the only member of the Atlanta Spirit to don a player championship ring. Micah you need to spend some of that free time looking in to these things, along with reporting things from a factual standpoint. I am dissapointed in the Hawks Blog to write the least, and i will be writng more. Micah, you need to reconnect with the fan base, not just your fellow bloggers at Blog night. Start living by the old adage "Autograph Your Work With Pride" .

I believe the team should stay together and the joshes should be resigned. If we make any trades i believe the hawks will come out of it horribly. The team already has a close to perfect bond so just keep the young players together and let them grow. If a "player" wants to leave that is a different story. I believe we need no one to finalize our "universe."
