Parting Is Such Sweet Sorrow
Posted by: Micah Hart on May 5, 2008 at 5:14PM EST

A sad day around the office today, as the Hawks players cleaned out their lockers for the season and completed their exit interviews with the Hawks coaching staff before taking off for the summer. It's always disappointing when the season ends, but of course this year it's a little less so. Yes, Game 7 on Sunday was bad. But as rough a game as it was (and it was rooooough), it's important not to lose the overall good vibes of the series. Maybe we didn't win the series, but we did shock the world.

The mood today was pretty jovial. I think the guys were pretty unhappy yesterday, but with a night to think about it they realize that overall, this postseason was a success. Now it's time to get back in the lab and work on the things that need fixing.

One thing I got to finally take care of today was a ping-poing match against Marvin Williams. I played Al Horford earlier in the year, and though he beat me 21-17, I still think I could take him (I'd say based on one game I think I could take him 4 of 10 or so). Marvin beat Al earlier this season for the team title (and has the trophy to prove it), and he and I have been talking smack to each other about a game ever since.

Sufficed to say, I don't plan on quitting my day job around here any time soon. Marv beat me 2-of-3 (you happy Marvin? I told you I'd post about this), winning the first game before I returned the favor in the second, then beating me in a 3rd game tie-break. He puts a ton of spin on the ball, and it took a while to adjust to it, but now that I know his game, I'll have to try him again when he gets back for training camp in October.

I had a chance to talk to Al Horford and Acie Law today about their rookie seasons, and it was very interesting. They each took very different paths this year, with Al capturing a ton of attention and becoming a major factor in the Rookie of the Year race while Law battled injuries and a lack of playing time. Still, with the season over, both sound like they know they are still unfinished products and are anxious to begin putting in the work that will make them and the team successful in 2008-09.

So what next for the team, overall? Obviously, there are a lot of decisions that need to be made around here, and we'll keep you posted as things happen. For now though, it's time for all of us to take a deep breath and try to decompress after a long, trying, but ultimately satisfying run in 2007-08.

Marvin Williams shows off his special ping-pong paddle, the one he used to beat me 2-of-3 (but I'll have my revenge!)

Keys To a successful off season

1. Re-Sign The Joshes
2. Don't re-sign Salim to make some room for vets
3. Sign a true Center(Diop and Okafor are available)
4. I never thought I say this but... hope that Speedy comes back from his injury.
5. Put J-Rich on the summer league team and determine if you want him then.

GET A CENTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I like many others realize that chemistry and talent is important in any team sport. The Hawks need a little of both. I would sign a free agent center that's been in the league at least three years that is physical and athletic. Also some veterans to shore up the bench. Don't make wholesale changes just teak what I consider a good nucleus. Question. Is Mike Woodson
the coach to lead the Hawks to a NBA Championship?

Any chance the Zaza/Balboa video will be posted online? The Basketblog was all over the television the past week blogging away. It almost made me want to blog about your blogging.

I have to disagree with you J-Mill regarding Salim. With playing time, and the right coach, he can be a killer from outside. And we can probably get him for cheap.

Diop would be my choice for center. Not much on offense but we should get more plays for Al as a power forward.

Speaking of Al, LOCK HIM DOWN NOW! Offer him an extension this summer.

Of course resign the Joshes. Zaza is expendable if we get Diop because Solomon Jones SHOULD be getting more time ahead of Zaza. Zaza fouls too much on defense and plays too soft more often than not. Where was this guy from the Boston series all year long? But then he gets too hype and stats fouling instead of defending.

That's my 2 cents. Oh yeah, steal D'Antoni from the Bulls. We can play with anybody when we run. I am not a huge fan of his defensive philosophy. I would prefer Van Gundy but he's not leaving his cushy TV job. But I would offer him a job first though.

PS. Billy Knight might deserve one more year...Or not.

Priorities:

1. Coach
2. Resigning Joshes
3. Center
4. Sharp shooter

Keep the Joshes (but don't match any crazy offers for J-Smoove) and Salim (who should be cheap).

Buy out Speedy.

Sign Chris Alexander from the D-League (let's be realistic, no quality free agents will sign with us).

Put Solomon on the D-League for a full year and let him develop. He is waaaay to green.

Slap Zaza on the head and push him to be the engine (on both ends) out of the bench that Chills already is.

Salim is my favorite player and has been since Jr. year in college at Arizona. He is an outstanding player but he has to learn to pass the pall a little bit more. If they teach him to give up the ball, he will get more minutes. The minutes that he is getting now isnt allowing him to get in grooves. If he get 17-20 minutes a game, he will be an offensive force coming off the bench. His three point shot will get better and he has shown that he can make it to the line. Even though he doesnt play much defense, he can still produce on the offensive end. Give him some money to play and teach him to give up the ball. He will be a great 6th man if the right team gives him the chance at good playing time. By the time 2010 rolls around, he will be starting somewhere in the league because of his ability to create on the offensive end.

Just 3 words:

THANK YOU GUYS

Anyone notice in that bottom picture that Acie is signing right handed, while he's a lefty on the court? Sort of interesting...

Anyway, BILLY KNIGHT is gone...what does this mean for the future of Woody? Did the ownership basically say to Billy, "he's staying, so it's up to you what you want to do"?? This is all very interesting, especially that Knight would leave right after the team he has built makes an exciting playoff run..

It will be sad if everything he built corrupts due to poor coaching... No offense to Woody, but he has no gameplan... That was very easy to see in the Boston games... The reason the Hawks made it to Game 7 was because the city of Atlanta lifted the team... But when the city wasn't there, neither were the Hawks... That's on the coach!

If Knight goes Woodson has to go also. Knight finally delivered in the draft while Woodson got the team to win in the playoffs. I think Knight should get more credit than Woodson for their respective accomplishments. Therefore I have to believe Woody is gone too.

But Billy King as a possible replacement? I rather have Isiah.

Me personally? I just cannot wait until next season.

I actually fought back a tear or two as our postseason ended. I fought back a smile to learn B. Knight had resigned. I'm waiting on pins and needles to learn the future of Woody. We must first handle our management BEFORE we begin any work on our players, both present and future. We need a QUALITY GM in here to build upon what Knight has left us with. Next....get Avery Johnson because let's face it....our defense sucked BALLS this year. Guys not helping on D and standing around was enough to make me scream. After that, let's get us a center, resign Smoove and Chills, BUY OUT SPEEDY'S CONTRACT and build upon this teams' success!

No matter what.....I will be there with you all each and every season. I hope the ATL took notice. We DO have a team here and hopefully you all will continue to support 'em.

Buyout Speedy? I don't know exactly how the salary cap works but if his salary will still give us a cap hit then just keep him and try to trade him. We don't have a draft picks this year so maybe we can get one and a big man for his salary.

Why isn't the ownership situation straightened out? That's what help Billy from firing Woody and that's what kept us from getting Amare Stoudamire before the draft. (Although I'm VERY happy with Al and Acie.)

I just heard some really disturbing new on espn from Jay baylis. he said "look for josh smith to be moving to philly cuz the hawks aren't willing to pay him 11mill or more. Now ok why the HELL would the hawks not re-sign their second leading scorer, rebounder, and best defender. this kind of talk is pure blasphemy, keep the young team together, make a move here and their but the core should remain.......... sign both joshes for that matter I'M WATCHING YOU SUNG!!!
