Hawks Team In Review: Shelden Williams
Posted by: Micah Hart on August 8, 2007 at 9:23AM EST
With summer league play over (job well done Shelden and Acie, nabbing All-RMR honors - and Al Horford might have if he hadn't hurt his ankle), and nothing else really going on until the start of training camp in October, I thought this would be a good time to take a look at the Hawks roster and check out everyone's status on the team. It should be a good way to kill some time over the next few weeks and help bridge the gap until the season starts!

Today we continue the series with second-year post player Shelden Williams. How do you think these players will do? Leave your answers in the comments!

Shelden Williams

2007 Stats: 5.5 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 46% FG, 76% FT, 0.5 bpg

2007 Highlights: Shelden's productivity in his rookie season was quite parabolic (did I just blow your mind with that math reference?). He started out playing well, receiving a lot of playing time in the absence of various Hawks players, then saw his production dip severely when his frontcourt brethren came back healthier. The Landlord rebounded (figuratively and literally) late in the season though, taking advantage of increased floor time to win Rookie of the Month honors for the Eastern Conference in April. He finished the season with four straight double-doubles (and led all rookies in that category on the season), including 16 points and 17 rebounds in the season's penultimate game against Milwaukee.

What he needs to work on this summer: Shelden played most of last season as a power forward, but started to come on strong when he was switched to the 5. If he projects to play more center in the future (or really, wherever he plays), he needs to shoot better from the field. 46% FG for a big man is subpar. At times last year, Shelden appeared to be trying to do too much at one time (a problem for almost every NBA rookie). If he works on continuing to develop a few go-to moves and stays away from his weaknesses, his shooting percentages and scoring average should go up.

Outlook for 2007-08: Shelden got off to a good start this summer, playing well enough in Salt Lake City to earn All-League honors at the Rocky Mountain Revue. If he can build on the confidence he gained at the end of last season and this summer, he has a chance to earn more significant minutes in a crowded Hawks frontcourt. But with rookie big man Al Horford to challenge for time at center, Shelden will have to hit the ground running.

Sheldens numbers are proportional to his playing time, just like any other player. After seeing him last year and in the summer league I think that Mike needs to trade someone because all the players cannot get enough Playing time to show him who is the best. Personally, mayby im crazy, I think we should trade marvin williams and speedy or tyrone to get immediate help. Now mayby they are saving till next year untill there will be a few more free agents to fit into mike's system, but i dont think that he and billy will be around after another crappy year.

Shelden does need more playing time because he is a good, strong forward. I think he and Al Horford can make a big impact in the post.

Trade shelden and marvin for noah. There might need to be a third team involved. Also, trade Jchill and some future draft picks for brewer. If you guys do not do this then the hawks will not be as good as they can. Make these deals happen and the HAWKS CAN GO TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP AND LOOSE TO SAN ANTONIO.

Don't trade Shelden and Marvin, just J-chill. We need the future draft picks to improve the team more. Although the Florida teamates play well together, they are no match for the NBA. Just trade J-chill and Speedy Claxton to a team that is willing to give up a good, tall Center that demands a post presence.

i think the ATL Hawks are just fine as they are.
Also Sheldon does need more playing time because he is better then we think and he needs the opportunity to show it. I like the fact that we have marvin williams, joe johnson, sheldon williams, al horford, josh smith, and acie law. They will make a great team. I do think we should trade either speedy claxton or t-lue along with another player that doesn't contribute that much for someone that will produce more than just minutes.
Acie Law should start at PG. And Sheldon should Start at PF.

if Shelden starts at PF where will Josh Smith go? Please dont say SF, because Josh has already shown that he is better suited at the PF and Shelden played much better at the 5 spot. Why start him at PF? And why would we trade a #2 and #5 draft pick for Noah? Then give up a great player and draft picks for Brewer?!? I think the Hawks are good, but we need someone to score as the second option if Smoove and Marvin dont step up big. I like Horford but I still think we are a little too small down low. We need to trade for some height at the 5.

You young people need to open your minds. Al Horford and Shelden William are not centers in this league. The Atlanta Hawks have never made the playoff without a 6'11 or 7'0 foot center. The sooner you except that the better off you will be.

Trade Sheldon/Speedy/Josh Chilldress... try to get something for them. maybe some draft picks or a Vet Center. I
PG: Acie Law
SG: J. Johnson
SF: Josh Smith
PF: Horford
C: Pachullia

Pachullia should start and we shoudl keep him. he is young and can get a lot of off. rebounds and defensive rebounds. plus, he can score more than sheldon would at center. And horford would probbaly be more comfortable at his natural position.

Sheldon is a 6'7 unathletic forward who can be a nice bench player. Is that all we can get from a 5th pick in the draft. If he doesn't block shots this season like he was brought in to do I can see him loosing playing time or being traded. The clippers or kings could use a player like sheldon.Maybe the hawks could get a first rounder for him!Hopefully the Hawks can pick up a Camby,Diop or J.Oneal to fortify this team down low.Of course i'm not saying those players are on the same playing field but they all can rebound and block shots.Plus they are legit 5s in the NBA something the hawks desperately needs!!!!!

PG: ACIE LAW
SG: JOE JOHNSON
SF: Marvin Williams
PF: JOSH SMITH
C: Shelden Williams

Lead Bench:

Al Horford
Pachullia
Josh Childress

Also we should resign our 3 free agents and we don't have to play them but at the end of the season trade them for a higher pick because i know our team will be better this year. And with that pick we should get either ROY HIBBERT, DEANDRE JORDAN, or KEVIN LOVE. Although i wouldn't get Love cause he is just another forward that in highschool and college can play 5 but wont be able to in the NBA. I would really like it if we could take Hibbert but if not DeAndre Jordan will be good too.

thats good i think.

plain and simple the hawks need to do a trade they have way to much youth they need to go and get a good solid vetran big man to mentor these young big guys cause it seems that the hawks are solid with their back courl game all they need is a solid big man

I just have to say that i think Shelden has the worst manners of anyone on the team. I think he is reading his own press and believing it. I am debating making a sign which says " Trade Shelden" ! Thank You.

I think we should trade Sheldo and Marvin for Yi Jianlian. We should do this because Yi is an amazing player with alot of potential. Here is what the Staring 5 shoul become (*= Player rating on a scale of 1=* to 5=*****) :

PG:Aice Law ****
SG:Joe Johnson *****
SF:Josh Smith ****
PF: Yi Jianlian *****
C: Zaza Pachulia **

We need Jamaal Magloire. He just signed a one year deal with the Nets but we can trade for him. Lets get him. 6'11 259 lbs. and only 29.

I just go by what the best critics (other players) say . Al Horford most ready to start.
C; Al Horford/Sheldon Williams backup
F;Josh Smith/Sheldon Williams backup
SF;Marvin Williams/Josh Childress backup
G;Joe Johnson/ Josh Childress backup
PG: Acie Law Point guard
Let the rest Pout ... both Marvin Williams and Sheldon Williams Plays better with the exta Minutes .. we got a team to build...Sheldon Williams shouldnt get off the floor by backing up Center and Power forward.. THIS WOULD BE ONE ATHLETIC TEAM!!!

First of all, I am happy to talk to some fans of this very passionate francise, which i am a great fan. Al Horford is more than ready to start. Al Horford will be one of the best rebounders in the league immediatley. Shelden Williams is more than ready to start at the five. Shelden williams could have been one of the best rebounders in this league immediatley. The main problem we have is that williams and Horford are half court players. They will slow the game down. It might not be good to slow down veteran teams when we are so young.

Shelden Is a legit 5 IN THE EAST. He will block about 1.5 and get 10 boards and remember Josh steals alot of blocks from him. they should of drafted conley, pass first pg and that squad would of been legit. But atlanta has drafted great for abvout 5 years now so of course they would draft a PF when they drafted one the year before. No to mention, Just way too many small forwards. Im from washington, but Marvin needs a good year or he is a bust. I read he has one of the best mid range jumpers in the league, WRONG. It all comes to offense with the hawks their offense runs nothing its terrible to watch they stand around and dont play with heart it seems. On defense that team is scarry Tell josh to be quiet and get a jumper besides his JAY he is that dude

everybody!
first off the genius who said shelden is 6'7 needs to go check the roster because he was 6'7 in 10th grade. Shelden can be a primetime center with a good point guard and time. The hawks move to backup is a good decision since he is a stronger 5 than he is a 4. It takes time for a 4 or a 5 to adjust because NBA is much different than college. Just look at Carlos Boozer. It took him 4 years to get to this point. He didn't just walk into 20.9 ppg in one season. That is much easier for a guard to accomplish then a center
