Hawks Team In Review: Salim Stoudamire

With summer league play over (job well done Shelden and Acie,
nabbing All-RMR
honors - and Al Horford might have if he hadn't hurt his ankle), and
nothing else really going on until the start of training camp in October, I
thought this would be a good time to take a look at the Hawks roster and check
out everyone's status on the team. It should be a good way to kill some time
over the next few weeks and help bridge the gap until the season starts!
Today we continue the series
with sharpshooter Salim
Stoudamire. How do you
think these players will do?
Leave your answers in the
comments!
Salim
Stoudamire
2007 Stats: 7.7 ppg, 36% 3-pt FG, 90% FT
2007 Highlights: Salim's minutes yo-yoed throughout the year, seeing a
lot at the beginning, less towards the middle, and pitching back upwards towards
the end of the season when the injuries began to pile up. Still, Stoudamire
managed to put up some impressive numbers, including a career-high (and second
best effort on the team all-season) 37 points in a
102-100 loss to
Portland on March 23. Stoudamire was an incredible 14-20 from the field
in that game, including 6-9 from downtown. He was similarly hot in a
115-102 win
over Milwaukee on April 6, nailing seven 3's accounting for all of his
21 points, and
dropped 26 on
Sacramento in a rough 117-92 loss on Dec. 10.
What he needs to work on this summer: Salim's playing time seems to
fluctuate with his defensive effort and his ability to limit mistakes.
Stoudamire plays with such white-hot intensity, it sometimes gets the better of
him and he gets down on himself when things take a turn for the worse.
Therefore, he needs to continue to work on controlling his emotions during
games.
In strictly basketball terms though, Salim will have to prove he can
distribute the ball more effectively if he wants to get minutes in the Hawks'
crowded backcourt. And, I never thought I'd say this, but he actually needs to
improve his shooting. Though most consider Stoudamire to be one of the best
shooters in the game, a 41% FG mark a year ago doesn't back it up. I blame a lot
of that on a lack of consistent minutes, and the fact that he tends to force a
few shots early on to get himself in rhythm. But a guy with his ability should
rarely be below 50%, even considering how many 3-pointers he takes.
Outlook for 2007-08: The team wants to play more up-tempo this season,
which is good news for a guy like Salim, whose
game translates much better to that than the slow-it-down pace of the past.
Stoudamire has been working extremely hard this off-season to improve
himself. Because of his lack of size he will probably never be the defensive
player the coaches would like him to be, but if he focuses on what he needs to
improve on (fighting through screens, learning to defend the pick and roll, and pressuring
the dribbler's ball hand) he won't force them to keep him out of the
lineup in late-game situations.
With the addition of Acie Law (Anthony Johnson is relatively new as well, but
it's unlikely Royal Ivey will return), there are fewer minutes to go around this
year as stated previously. However, Salim provides something that really only
Joe Johnson has proven himself capable of on this team - the ability to score
points in bunches. Like JJ, when Salim is on, it is a sight to behold.
If he can get off to a good start and get his confidence going, he could really
solidify his spot in the rotation and make a significant contribution.
Do you agree?

I think he should be the 2nd guy behind j.johnson... the hawks lost a lot of games last season because they couldn't score many points..so the hawks need more scoring and salim can score... but we have a !@#%$#%$# STUPID COACH who does not know how to use the players....

Salim is a player that can put up 30 a night when he's on fire. I agree with Blodus that Salim should be the 2nd guy behind JJ. I also agree that Salim's shot % is a result for lack of inconsistent minutes.
The one thing I want to see Salim do is play the point better. His cousin, Damon was a good PG back in his prime. I'll love to see Salim do the same.

I like the idea of Salim coming off the bench 7th or 8th. I hope the Acie Law addition makes him play his heart out everytime he gets on the floor.
What I do like about his game is his quickness! If the Hawks really do pick up the pace this season he should get on the floor every night because Speedy AJ and Lue may run out of gas too early.
Learning how to make plays for others would be to his benefit.

I wasn't going to say anything about the coaching, but i must. And I will just simply reiterate what was said before that the coaching staff does not know how to properly distribute minutes. They have done a poor job of properly distributing minutes and providing this team with an identity when Joe Johnson is not on the court. I blame them for being the only reason Joe Johnson got injure last year and remained injured for so long. There was no reason for him to play so many minutes when our team was so young and desperately in need of a more evenly distributed amount of playing times. When looking at all these stats the message is the same. when these players got consistent minutes they played well when they didnt know why they didnt play for a week straight there performance suffered.
To sum it up in the beginning of the year there were players on this team that were receiving more playing time than salim, shelden, royal, and etc. those same players couldnt stay on the team for the whole year.

Salim is one of the best players on the team in my eyes. Let Speedy back Salim and sit Childress. I love Salim and have loved him since his Jr. year in college at Arizona. He is nasty. Once he gets going, no one will stop him. Salim will be a starter in the league by the end of the 08-09 season. SALIM!

I hope that comment made about trading Law and Salim for Brewer and Marvin for Noah was sarcastic. Please tell me he was playing.

I know that this blog is about Salim but I must address what everyone seem to feel is the downfall of the Hawks. Everyone wants to blame the coaching staff for everything. First half the team had inconsistent playing time last year simply because they were injured. When someone got healthy another player got injured. So with that said, how could anyone manage to distribute playing time when key players weren't able to play together for more than a week. And as far as Joe Johnson's minutes, every star wants to be on the court and so does he. The franchise is being built around JJ, so he should be out there busting his as just as any other NBA star player.

I agree with what you said about JJ, he needs to be out there cause we are building this team around him.
Also we have to think positive about this season we have a chance to do really good we just have to take it. This year you will see the potintial and we could even make the playoffs then the next year i say we can at least make it to the eastern confrence championship
think positive fans.

Acie Law/ Tyronne Lue, Speedy Claxton, A.Johnson Joe Johnson/ Josh Childress, Salim Stoudamire Marvin Williams/ Solomon Jones, Slava Medvedenko Josh Smith/Al Horford, Estaban Batista Sheldon Williams/Zaza Pachulia, Lorenzen Wright

On subject... Salim is "GREAT". Not "GREAT" as in Michael Jordan "GREAT'' but great as in a great player to have on the team. He has just had problems fitting in. He's not a pg, he's too small to be a sg, and he is not as fiesty on the defensive end to make up for the lack of size like A.I. But he is a "GREAT" scorer. When he's hot, he's hot. I like him as a "GREAT" player on our team because though he can be inconsistent at times, he can score, shoot the three, and is so exciting to watch when he's going off. His minutes are cut short because of his defense and inconsistency but if he works harder on the defensive end, he would get more consistent minutes... which in turn would lead to more consistent play... which in turn would lead to more minutes and probably the 1st player off the bench in the 2-spot.

I love salim and i agree he needs some work but he also needs to get in there more i cant see how you sit some on the bench for a whole game he can get in and score and have some out there that doesn't even take the shots needed when its crunch time. I saw so many games with ivey in there and would even take the open shots. I say drop speedy and a. johnson and find a better player in free agency. we also need a coach who know how and when to play players. I never got the reason ivey started over lue at all i really cant say why we had him still on the team at all any way. we need a new coach with that fire in his eyes to win. when JJ wasnt in there it seemed as if he was lost for who to put in and kept the wrong player out there too long we had a lot of games we should have won but lost because of coachin amongest player miss cues we also need a new GM who knows what the team really needs to make it. I really think the coach is here still because or his relationship with the GM and when billy leaves so will he. To me i think he really doesnt care to much weather the team gets better or not with the bad relationship he has with that one owner. fire the coach and gm before the start of the season and Nique take over we need that fire in there to win if we want to win and play the right playes please this season

Salim is the only Hawk I have ever seen who openly pouts when he doesn't get the ball. He gives up on the rest of the play and doesn't run back on D. He's horrible on defense. He's a a glorified streak shooter. He rarely passes the ball. He average 1 assist/game last year. 1 assist people. Bench Salim. He's only good for garbage time. I rather have him mope around the bench then while on the floor during the game.

Salim is an awesome shooter when he is hot, but his defense is poor against larger/stronger guards. I seen Jason Kid totally put on a clinic against Salim last year, and not because Kid was having a good shooting night, he just overpowered him and got easy high percentage shots. That said, Salim is great if you need points or just need to give JJ a rest.

I've played professionally in FRANCE for 14 yrs, and coached for 6 yrs. and frankly I think that Salim is an incredible addition to this team, (when he's used correctly). Salim will be better this year with an up-tempo game. As a coach I always talked to my players, even the ones that only played sparingly. Tell salim that he' going to be the "micro-wave" player! Get him prepared for that role. Watch what happens!!! 3 seven to eight minute periods a night in that role, and he'd be more relaxed, his confedence would grow and his production would tripple!

Who really cares about this dude. This year i'm hoping that the Atl Hawks, try Acie Law. We need a strong point guard, and i think that he our man this year.

I think Coach Ron James makes a great point, tell this kid how you want to use him so he will know how to prepare and what to expect in every game. He has value for this Team and he will get you points when needed. PASS him the ball when he isolated and develop plays for him so he does not have to run around and take all the phsical abuse trying to get free.

In reviewing the comments of coach James. I am also in agreement. Salim appears to be a valued talent in the league. A prolific scorer, and a hustler on the floor. Most teams treat such a talent by making plays that enhance those capabilities. So far the hawks have not. Whats the coaching staff thinking about? I as a fan would hope they utilize such a talent and move foward to this years playoffs
