Hawks Team In Review: Marvin Williams
Posted by: Micah Hart on August 28, 2007 at 4:27PM EST
With summer league play over (job well done Shelden and Acie, nabbing All-RMR honors - and Al Horford might have if he hadn't hurt his ankle), and nothing else really going on until the start of training camp in October, I thought this would be a good time to take a look at the Hawks roster and check out everyone's status on the team. It should be a good way to kill some time over the next few weeks and help bridge the gap until the season starts!

Today we continue the series with third-year F Marvin Williams. How do you think these players will do? Leave your answers in the comments!

Marvin Williams

2007 Stats: 13.1 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 1.9 apg, 82% FT

2007 Highlights: A year ago, Marvin was coming off an MVP performance in summer league and everyone was looking forward to seeing how he would perform in his second season in the league. But, fate had other plans, and a broken finger sidelined him for the season's first 17 games. It took a little while for Marvin to work himself back into game shape, but once he got it going he had several good games. For my money, his best performance was the 23 points he dropped on Chicago in the Hawks excruciating 106-104 loss on Dec. 16. It was only his sixth game back, but Marvin showed off the promise Atlanta fans had been waiting for as he hit several big shots in the second half to keep the Hawks in the lead (one which they would ultimately blow in overtime, sadly). Other good efforts were 24 and 7 in a 98-85 loss to Washington on Apr. 13, and 23 points on 10-15 shooting in the season-ending win over Indiana.

What he needs to work on this summer: Marvin may have the prettiest looking shot on the team (Joe and Salim included), and he is already one of the best mid-range shooters in the league. The key for him for the future is extending his range further out to make himself a 3-point threat. Last season he made only 25% (13-53) of his attempts from beyond the arc, which in this writer's opinion is not only too low a percentage but also way too few attempts. Once Marvin adds more strength, I feel certain he'll improve in this category.

Outlook for 2007-08: If Josh Smith is the hyper-aggressive type, making mistakes because he is constantly pressing the action, then Marvin is his exact opposite. Marv keeps mistakes to a minimum on the court, which is a good thing for the most part. But, as the saying goes, sometimes you have to break a few eggs to make an omelet. Marvin needs to show more aggressiveness in his third season, and if it leads to a few more miscues I think it is something the team can live with if it means having him dictate the action more often.

Since Joe Johnson and Josh Smith appear somewhat firmly cemented in the #1 and #2 roles on offense, Marvin has a chance to really capitalize on a lack of attention from opposing defenses and make teams pay with his shooting ability. If he starts out hot, other teams will have to start rethinking their defensive priorities, and any time you can create indecision on the part of your opponent you can do some real damage.

What do you think?

Marvin needs to step up this season if the Hawks have any hopes of breaking into the play-offs. His minutes could be tested with so many similar players of equal ability so if he doesn't step-up then maybe he'll be trade bait.

OMG, this is the guy who is competing with Josh smith for the starting job? theres no competition here, let J.Smith start, he can play a hell lot better defense something hawks need, can score much more than i have seen marvin do that...he's just a better player...
I hope Woodson is not that stupid, but u never know.... he might actually be.

I think Marvin can live up to his pick #. All he needs is to be a starter at the 4 position and not miss any games!

Dijay and J-dude.. I don't think that Marvin is fit to play the power forward position. Marvin is more of a SF...therefore Smoove is not battling Marvin for the 4 spot.

Marvin is way too weak to play the 4 and does not have any inside D whatsoever. Josh Smith is strong and can block some shots, as we all know.

The real question is.....who will Mike Woodson start at SF? Josh Childress or Marvin Williams.

My thoughts on Marvin:

Marvin is a player that can be a factor for the Hawks run for the playoffs.

Marvin hasn't yet shown that he is worth the #2 pick, but he has shown some glimpses that he could be.

If he avoids injuries and gain weight and get stronger, he could be our #2 option.

I think this review nailed it. Marvin easily has the most complete offensive arsenal on the team next to Joe Johnson, but he just can't seem to put it all together mentally and bring it night in and night out. With the ability to play the 3, 4, and even a little 2, it doesn't matter where he starts, because he'll still get 30-35 minutes, and his versatility keeps Woody's options flexible.

He'll spend considerable time exploiting the opposing team's third best defender regularly when he learns when to put his head down, when to pull up, and when to give it to Acie or Joe and reset the offense. It just take a little time. Keep in mind, this is a kid who would be going into his senior year in college right now. He has a bright future ahead of him (he reminds me of a pre-injury Antonio McDyess), and barring another Billy Knight brain cramp, it will be in a Hawks uniform.

Marvin Williams is no doubt a 3. There is no way he can battle any of the other power forwards for a 4 spot. That being said, he needs to get his shooting up and try to spark the offense.
He got hot towards the end of the season and I was at every game watching him. It got me excited to see him healthy and playing well.

Anyone seeing the clinic Esteban Batista is laying down in Vegas....I believe he is leading the tournament in scoring for Uruguay.

iT WILL BE VERY NICE TO SEE WHO MIGHT BE BETTER IN PRACTICE BETWEEN HORFORD AND WILLIAMS (MARVIN), BUT I WOULD TRADE MARVIN FOR YOAKIM NOAH OR BREWER. IWOULD GET NOAH, BREWER, AND HORFORD, ON THE HAWKS FOR THE NEXT TEN YEARS.

I think putting Marvin at the # 2 spot is the way to go. He's got the thinking of a shooting guard, plus he can and will take it to the basket. It seems that the Hawks are loaded with forwards..... is that the plan?

1-Acie or Speedy
2- Joe without a doubt
3- Marvin Perfect fit there al u want in a 3
4- Josh Smith - in the eastern conference there arent any huge 4's though there are talented ones J-Smooth fits here becuz of his shotblocking and ability to draw PF's put and shoot or take them off the dribble
5- Let Horford and Zaza platoon at the beginning of the season and when the time is right for Al let him take the spot.

The Hawks have the talent for a 7th or 8th seed in the playoffs and thats if they just play average and everyone stays healthy, if Acie and Al surprise and Marvin breaks out look out cuz thats a team no one will want to play come playoff time. Go Hawks!!

Marvin will soon be at the end of his rookie contract. He has this year to prove what kind of investment a team should make in him. Should he get starter money when he shares playing time or does he deserve to be the main guy at a position. He will soon be graded differently when he reaches free agency. The Hawks finally have a legitimate roster, but are still the young team in the league. The Hawks still gamble on unproven inconsistant talent and are outmanned on any given night.

At some point potential talent has to become proven talent, question is, is this the year Marvin and the Hawks prove something on the court?

I hate drafting for potential, then giving up before that potential develops.

My prediction back from Sept. was almost right except for acie starting ( the one and only bright move billy knight has made through a trade Bibby) or ( Horford or Law his only two picks worth a dime) anyways they have played average and are going to get the 7th is very lucky or 8th if they stay their course. Insider on NBA Tv says Larry Brown may be interested in our team, because apparently Woodson is out no matter what, word on the street anyways, Go Hawks 1st Rd upset of Pistons or Celt's!!.... nah please not yet
