Hawks Will Match Offer For Josh Smith
Posted by: Micah Hart on August 8, 2008 at 10:13PM EST
HTML clipboard The wait is over, Hawks fans. I can report tonight that the Hawks will match the offer sheet signed earlier this evening by Josh Smith with the Memphis Grizzlies, and Josh will remain in a Hawks uniform for next season and beyond.

Rick Sund spoke with me briefly just a moment ago to confirm, and had this to say:

"We are going to match the offer sheet, and Josh will continue to be a Hawk," said Sund. "We are looking forward to training camp in October. In the meantime, we are continuing to work to improve our roster.

"I just spoke to Josh, and he is happy to get the process behind him and move forward. The bottom line was, we wanted to make a quick decision once the offer came through to show Josh that we want him to remain a Hawk."

Smith is scheduled to be back in Atlanta to take his physical, and once the physical is completed the Hawks will officially match the offer.

Obviously, this is terrific news for the Hawks. More to come I'm sure...

UPDATE: Just to prove I'm not lying, here's the official release!

Wow! i cannot believe it. how the hawks would be terrible next season without josh smith. Next season should be great!

Posted by: david on August 8, 2008 11:43PM EST
YES!!! Hawks are going to be great this year. Josh Smith is only going to be a year older with more experience this year... and his already insane numbers will improve too. Also, Horford will be even better than last year and u can't forget about Joe Johnson, he is still a young player and has room for improvement as well. Also, Mike Bibby should be fully healthy from his hand injury which will help his shooting alot and thus open up the lane for Joe johnson and smith. Mike will be draining 3's all day this year.

Posted by: melman on August 9, 2008 12:19AM EST
thats what i'm talking bout asg! great move! i was so happy when i saw the news at 12:10 am. with josh smith added, we will be playoff contenders! once again i applaued ya'll for pulling together on making a great move! hey haters, get the hell off our blog and do something else constructive!! ya'll just hating cause the hawks is on the rise, and the highlight factory will be jumping this year!!!!!! GO HAWKS!!!!! LETS KICK SOME A**!!!!!!!

Posted by: Anonymous on August 9, 2008 12:21AM EST
Bibby will bounce back from injury and be a leader on this *still* young Hawks team.

Joe...haha you know about Joe.

Marvins Put on 12 Pounds of Muscle so far this offseason and been Shooting all 3's increasing his range.

Josh has been working all off season in Houston (Hakeem?) and will continue to be a monster.

Al had a double double while he was just adjusting to the NBA game, what is he gonna do next year?

I made a good decision on tickets!

What's the deal with the Raptors fans posting so much on here? Do they think they're our rivals or something? Interesting. Also, funny. We're taking out BOSTON this year, baby! Oh, and by the way, I really don't think there are lots of Raptors on here... I'm pretty sure it's just one person posting over and over.

Posted by: OWEN ROGERS on August 9, 2008 1:30AM EST
THE HAWKS WAS THE ONLY TEAM THAT TOOK
BOSTON 7 GAMES IN THE PLAYOFFS. WHAT DID THE RAPTORS DO? I KNOW YOU NEED TO SHUT

THE HAWKS WILL BE A TEAM TO CONTEND WITH.

THIS IS BAD .IF YOU THINK THIS WILL HELP HAWKS .i AM TELLING MAN,NO WAY.JOSH CAN BE A MEMEBER ON THE TEAM BUT NOT AS AN ELLITE PLAYER.HE IS WEAK IN DEFENSE,NO BOLL HANDLING AND DONT NOW WHAT IS THE TACTICAL.HE HAVE THAT ABILITY TO YUMP AND BLOCK TIMING.I AM ASKING JOSH?HOW YOU ARE GOING TO PLAY FOR WODSON.YOU JUST SAID "I CANT PLAY WITH THIS COACH"GOOD LUCK BOTH OF YOU.THE OTHER PART IS.IF JOSH IS A GOOD PLAYER WHY HE WAS NOT PICK BY ANOTHER TEAM BUT MEMPHIS.EVERYTHING WAS A GAME.
THE SECOND PART OF THE SHOW IS:PROBLEM IN OUR TEAM IS JONSON.CAN U FIGURE OUT,WHEN JONSON IS OUT OUR TEAM PLAY BETTER.WHY?BECAUSE HE THINK IS A KOBY IN OUR TEAM.THEY ARE TRYING TO BILD THE TEAM AROUND HIM BUT HE IS NOT A LEADER.HOW MANY GAME WE LOST BECAUSE HIM.REMEMBER AND I AM SURE THAT U AGREE WITH ME.BUT DONT FORGET HE IS 85 MILLION PLAYER.WITH THE MONEY FOR JONSON AND SMITH BRING KOBY AND WE ARE CHAMPION.ANYWAY GOOD LUCK ATL.AND LET SEE THE STORY WHO IS GOING TO BE OUR KING,JOSH OR JONSON

Posted by: Mike on August 9, 2008 2:29AM EST
Too funny you guys are happy to resign J Smith I'll simply put it like this. You barely made the playoffs last year. Your team has not improved, almost every team in the east has except yours.

Guess what now you guys got the choice trade Smith or miss the playoffs because you have no chance of even making with your current team and you all know it.

OH good luck knocking out Boston this year like i said you wont make the playoff's.

Boston
toronto
Philly
Detroit
Orlando
Cleveland
Milwaukee
Washington

there's the playoffs folks and yet i still got

Chicago
Miami

Then finally id rank Atlanta 11th in the east.so good luck.sure injurys could happen but if you expect to best 3 of the 10 teams i ranked ahead of you, your asking too much of your team.

THE WAIT IS OVER

Posted by: imtmac on August 9, 2008 8:13AM EST
Its a damn shame. We finally can get somebody good for a person that only gives effort a third of the time, and thats at home. He only dunks and blocks shots. We dont need a highlight film, but somebody that plays hard EVERY nite. Should have kept JChill, but understand he could not turn that down. Plus plenty of good free agents out there, but no, guess I will not be renewing my season tics now. As I have waited on this decision. Done with ya, back to the college game. Its just a damn shame!

Posted by: yetta on August 9, 2008 8:38AM EST
Look forward to shaking Josh Smith's hand this season; I have enjoyed watching him continue to prove himself. I have had season tickets for years and will never give up on my home team.

ALL YOU HAWKS HATERS PLEASE STAY HOME THIS YEAR; I'M TIRED OF HEARING YOU CRY.

Posted by: Hawksgirl on August 9, 2008 9:10AM EST
I'm so tired of seeing all these hateful comments from fans with sorry ass teams. And BEKA or whatever your name is.You dont know what you talkin bout. Never talk when you dont have your facts straight. Joe is leader material although he is not as vocal as we want him to be but no one else would fill the position better than him!! He is a vet on the team and is helping these young guys grow. The least you can do is give him some respect.

And I see Sund matched that offer the same day. I had to reread that to believe it. Good job GM. One good step and many more to go.

Oh, THANKS MEMPHIS FOR SPEEDING UP THE SIGNING PROCESS. LOL

Go Hawks!!..Raps suck..go on your own board and talk trash....keep runnin your mouths and maybe youll have another point guard takin away in a strecher from a hawks foul.

Posted by: A-Town Down on August 9, 2008 9:28AM EST
Dang whats up with all the HATERS we are going to be a lot better than last year we added a 3pt shooter and he is athletic. J-smooth is going to come back strong we need him just like we need Joe.

LET'S GO HAWKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: j on August 9, 2008 9:37AM EST
Hello,
Who are these morons posting such utter nonsense? Also, using all caps is just lame. It makes me so sad to realize that a sizable segment of our population lacks even remedial English skills. Is there a more damning indictment of the public school system than many of the posts above. Yikes.

I gotta give props to the Atlanta Spirit Group. Retaining Smoove for a price that does not hamstring future contracts is huge. A byproduct of so many years of lottery picks is expensive extensions. Considering Williams, Horford, and Johnson soon being eligible for extensions, having more cap flexibility is awesome.

Losing Childress was unexpected by most everyone. The fact remains he received a contract far beyond what any NBA franchise deemed him to be worth. Losing him will hurt no doubt. However, it does open up some of the bottleneck at the Wing position.

Now, lets sign Ellison and perhaps another shooter.
Go Hawks,
J

the hawks are steping their game up the raptors suck too but just wait the hawks are going to shock the world and to yall haterz on the hawks go suck som and get a life cuz if yall really hated the hawks yall would have not been on the site! Posted by: Jdizzle on August 9, 2008 9:56AM EST
YEA! Josh Smith is back and he will be better than ever. Now we should trade zaza and speedy with maybe a 2nd round pick for andris biedriens. A.B. got 16 rebounds in one game. With Al, Josh, and Biedriens we would have probably the yougest and most beastly frontcourt in the game.

yo big ups to the asg for resigning j smoove.

to the fan who said that j chill is a better player than j smoove: are you out of your mind.

compare the two's stats from last year and you will see that j smoove is a better all around player.

personally i would rather have josh smith on the team than j chill. so right now i am on cloud nine.

there's a reason why j smoove was a starter and j chill was not. simply put because he is better.

don't get me wrong, i liked j chill and felt that he contributed to the team as the sixth man. he had some nice dunks and blocks during the season. so get your facts straight. i guess j chill was a highlight player too then.

there's nothing wrong with being a highlight player. dunks put two points on the board just like jumpers and layups. it doesn't matter how you get the points as long as you score. so stop hating on j smoove he deserves a spot on the Hawks roster.

in conclusion both josh smith and josh childress contributed to the team. josh smith's contribution was just more[every game he had stats across the board]. face facts and get over it.

THANKS FOR RESIGNING JOSH SMITH ASG!
MORE HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE HIGHLIGHT FACTORY IN 2008-09!

Posted by: justin smith on August 9, 2008 11:38AM EST
Great Josh Smith is a great athletic player that could be a mega star if he got his game together. He needs to play the game like a power forward cause that what his skill set is more aimed torward or practice his ball handling and jump shooting but i rather have him then a jerman oneil. Josh is crazy good and if he post up and mike feeds him your looking at a 20 and 10 player and for the money that they payed for him..... man put it this way if mike is anything like his old self the hawks could go far in the play off ........ not a hawks fan just an NBA fan but i see talent when i see

Posted by: Anonymous on August 9, 2008 11:50AM EST
Good job signing Josh Smith the chemistry between him and Joe Johnson was to much for any team to lose.
Don't stop their management we still need a big versatile good guy in the center position those guys deserve that alone with all the hawks out their. Fans we need to do our part to fill the stands in phillip arena this year and our options will be much better. GO HAWKS

Posted by: khiry on August 9, 2008 11:53AM EST
Great move, it took too long tho. We should've been signed him and for more money. I think he still doesn't want to be in Atlanta, if we make the playoffs then it's another story but if we don't you can't blame none of the players if they leave b/c of poor management and coaching. Our depth is going to hurt us this year, mo evans is good but not a 6th man but probably can do it. We should trade a 2nd round pick, speedy claxton, and zaza to the grizzles for javaris criettiton & hakim warrick. Im sure they would do it b/c they're trying to rebuild in the draft. That would give us another young guard - healthy - and a proven backup pf behind j smoove. Randolph Morris may not be that bad but im not on his bandwagon. Idk just some thoughts we just need a backup post man then in the 2009 draft we need to get a legit center.

Posted by: Anonymous on August 9, 2008 11:56AM EST
What have Solomon Jones been doing this off season has he pickup any weight yet. If I am right about this guy he will be a big key in the Hawks success come on Solomon do what it takes to get into the rotation.

Posted by: Anonymous on August 9, 2008 12:02PM EST
Khiry I read your comment and don't take this the wrong way but Josh need to be in the SF position and AL as PF and we need to acquire a big in the middle with Morris and ZaZa as backup AL backup should be Solomon and Josh backup maybe Marvin William if we don't have to use him in a deal for a Center. Thanks

Posted by: butch on August 9, 2008 12:02PM EST
mike you is a duck plucker you can not pick teams you think are going to make the playoffs this early.the hawks have all ready added to quality players to their team, they are going to better than a lot of you duck pl uckers think and thats the bottom line because i said so.

Posted by: butch sullivan macon ga. on August 9, 2008 12:17PM EST
lot people talking about money players in the nba make.they some should get those big contracts and some should not,get be real no body is worth millions for doing anything. if people want to pay that kind of money for any kind of job of whatever more power to the ones on the receiving end.people talking about josh smith look at the money deng got from chicago he cannot touch josh smith.

All I can say is ThankYou Memphis on getting Josh to Sign this Contract for US. I am still not sure about Marvin Williams. They say he is putting on about 30 pounds of muscle and is better at the knocking down the 3pt. shot ... I HOPE so cause He is toooo slow and clumsy to play the small forward spot.. He better come out like an animal.

Posted by: DaBird on August 9, 2008 12:36PM EST
I'm very glad that we resigned him; it is good to know that he will be wearing a Hawks uniform this season. But, as a die hard Hawks fan, I am disappionted with the organization that tells its fan base that its number one priority was to sign both Joshes this summer to long term deals and this is how you get the job done. You let one go overseas and you wait six weeks for the other to get an offer from another team to match it just blows my mind. To me, it seems that keeping either one was not a major priority as much as saving money was. Unfortunately, again, future elite free agents won't think about coming here because of how you treat your key core players with no loyalty and appreciation. As a fan, it also shows that the ownership group does not want Philips Arena to be packed like it was in the playoffs (went to 2 out of 3 games, amazing) because offering only lowball contracts does not make me think that you are serious about keeping a playoff contender intact. Luckily, I am still a fan of the Hawks players, but not of the Spirit Group. Get Belkin out, straighten up the ownership, and make this franchise one that is not laughed at by the rest of the world by being a more proactive about attracting and keeping players that the fans want to see on the court.

to all you ignorant raps fans, were sorry we knocked the crap out of TJ, but thats no reason to chime in and hate! Were on the rise and theres nothing you can do to stop it. Think we still need some added def and rbnd in the middle, but if Bibby can get it going this year and show his veteran savy, we will easily exceed expectation.

Posted by: LeGeref on August 9, 2008 1:33PM EST
WOW, I CANT BELIEVE THEIR ARE SO MANY PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT FEEL THE WAY I DO. I AM SO EXCITED. I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO WAS CHECKING THIS PAGE ON A DAILY BASIS TO SEE THEM RESIGN. STILL A LITTLE BUT HURT ABOUT CHILDRESS, BUT SUND JUST MADE UP FOR IT.

Posted by: Anonymous on August 9, 2008 1:35PM EST
I love josh in a hawks uniform but i take back nothing i said about him being a bit selfish and spoiled. He is still young and has a lot to learn but i still love him and im going to watch him grow into one of the best players in the league.

Smart move Hawks, what took ya so long! Congrats Josh ( you are the man)

Posted by: wuffe on August 9, 2008 2:17PM EST
Thankyou Memphis for signing him up to a offer sheet for Atlanta so we could sign him ... Not a bad price.. The thing about Marvin Williams putting on about 30lbs of muscle and working on his outside 3pointer recently, He still looks clumsy to me ... He certainly doesnt have the quickness to keep up with the small forwards or drive to the basket, I just dont see him as much of a rebounder either cause his game is mostly on the perimeter. I still say let him have another modestly good year and trade him for a center

Posted by: ty on August 9, 2008 2:48PM EST
raptors you dont even have a point guard and jermaine oneal is washed up now

Posted by: Anonymous on August 9, 2008 3:11PM EST
Everyone is happy for Josh to include me lets focus on a man in the middle to make this all worth while. The long period with Josh signing and losing Childress is water under the bridge at least management came through with the most important signing. Now lets get a center.

Posted by: Dan on August 9, 2008 3:25PM EST
YES!!!!!!!! 5 year deal...wahooooooooooooo. AL is going to be much more of a monster this season. Acie law doesnt have the injury bug anymore. Mike bibby and fully heathey. Maurice is going to be big stuf. and we can trade speedy!!!wahooo....speedy a waste of hawks cap room....need to trade him!!!

Thank you Rick....we will be the champs baby.

Raptors fans, this is Hawks site. It is retarded to visit Hawks site and post something that has nothing to do with Raptors. Plus, Raptors' fans, you need to know how to spell correctly and basic internet manners.

Hawks finally did right thing to be playoff contender. We've got Bibby for full year and Joe Johnson and Smith will be great combination. Maurice Evans will give a 3 point shooter that we lacked last year. We'll miss Childress, but hopefully those two signing before Smith can replace Childress in both paint and perimeter

Posted by: Chase Creasy on August 9, 2008 6:18PM EST
wow... i thought we were gonna let him get away... that wouldve been a tremendous blow 2 the defense... if he can ever figure it out on the offensive end this kid will be a superstar. lets go hawks!!!!

GOOD LUCK ATL.YOU ARE WRONG.SMITH IS OK TO BE IN OUR TEAM BUT NOT WITH THAT MONEY.U SHOULD UNDERSTAND SOMETHING.jOSH IS NOT A GOOD PLAYER.HE WILL MAYBE BE IN THAT LEVEL AFTER 2 YEARS.WE NEED SOMEBODY ON GUARD POSSITION.
BIBY AND LOW ARE NOT THE PLAYERS THAT CAN HELP THIS TEAM.WE CAN BE PERFECT:ZAZA-5,AL in4,MARVIN -3 AND JO in 2.THE 1 POSSITION WE CAN NOT TRUST LOW.BRING SOMEBODY.BENCH PLAYER.EVANS-SOLO-SMITH -LOW.THAN THIS IS THE TEAM THAT CAN DOMINATE THE BOARD.WE SOW THAT ANYTIME WHEN WE PLAY WITH 2 BIG MAN.BIG Z AND AL.THIS IS GOING TO BE THE SAME LIKE SPURS BABY.COACH WOODSON TRUST THOSE 2 BIG PLAYER AND U WILL SEE.

Well, it looks like we signed othello hunter from the summer league, he seems excited to come to the hawks, lets hope he does some good

Posted by: J-Bird on August 9, 2008 11:28PM EST
Is their seriously a Griz fan on here talking smack now? Wow what has the world come to. Oh and by the way maybe you were in a coma for the past 8 months but Pao Gasol is no longer a member of the Griz so your lineup is messed up to begin with. Bibby = Conley...... i think Conley is the player we should have taken 2 years ago but Bibby's experience and clutch shot is just as good as Conley's potential
Johnson >> Mayo ..... Johnson is a far better 2 guard then Mayo at this point in his career so dont even go their
Smith = Gay .... Smith is a much better defensive player but Gay is a better offensive player both are future studs in the league
Williams > Dargo obviously do i even need to say why??

Bottom line is we were the only team in the NBA that took the best team in the NBA to a game 7 in the playoffs.... not the Lakers, Pistons, Cavs, Spurs, Mavs, Raptors, Hornets, and deffinately not the Grizz so get an 8 seed then come back and talk to us

Posted by: hawkfan on August 10, 2008 12:13AM EST
j-bird, wat r u talking about? we are not the only team, didn't you see the game 7 between the cavs and the celtics when lebron and pierce went at each other, talk about watching the playoffs

Posted by: correction on August 10, 2008 12:20AM EST
J-Brid, The Cavs took 'em to game 7 in the very next round and it was one of the illest games in any round of the playoffs..Of course, aside from the game Joe Johnson took over in the 4th, and single handedly beat the Celts..Classic! I think JSmoove blocked Rondo about three times in that game..Glad to see him back! And I think the Gasol this dude's talkin about is Pao's brother Marc, a 7-1/265 pound rookie C..never seen him play, but I'm sure Horford will school'im inside every time they meet.

hawks fan forever and always!
y these otha people hain on the hawks!
hawks the best!
yay we #1

Posted by: Anonymous on August 10, 2008 7:51AM EST
I am a true hawks fan. I would be a hawks fan with or without josh smith. he is a good player but he turns the ball over quite a bit and has no jump shot. I think the hawks are progressing and taking steps towards being a dominant force in the eastern conference. All hail Joe Johnson.
GO HAWKS!

Posted by: J-Bird on August 10, 2008 9:38AM EST
MY bad i admit im wrong i thought it was game 6 that the cavs took boston to but your right. My point was this Griz fan is posting the lineup like hes got 5 All-Stars playing for his team. He has 3 guys with potential thats it not one of them has done a thing in this league so far besides Gay. Saying that the Griz are gonna be champs is fine but do it on your own board dont come on the hawks board and say stuff like the hawks suck it just makes me mad. I live in Northern PA so i get to watch about 2 hawks games a year except for last year when i watched all of the hawks playoff games. As far as the Cavs & Celtics thing i admit i was wrong i just didnt remember game 7 but now that you say something i do remember it.

Posted by: A.K.M. fo life on August 10, 2008 10:25AM EST
hawks have a really good line up they have 4 all star players
1.Bibby
2.joe johnson
3.marvin williams
4.j smooo
5.al horford
tats a killer team

Posted by: quinton on August 10, 2008 1:01PM EST
he is the only reason i watch the hawks
smith should be an all star

Posted by: Anonymous on August 10, 2008 2:28PM EST
Not to go against you AKM but Marvin Williams need to come out of the starting Line up. Al did a great job as a center last season he is a power forward Al need to go back to his natural position we need to get a 7 footer in there and Marvin come off the bench like Childress did and Josh should be the starting small forward and we can make some noise.

Hey Mike, your a retard cause this is what the playoffs will look like next yr.

1. Boston
2. Detroit
3. Orlando
4. Clevland
5. Atlanta
6. Philly
7. New Jersey
8. Toronto

Thats how its gonna be.

Hold on one minute hawks fans we still need a man in the middle we are not quite strong enough yet. I hope management get this guy Elson and add Pargo. If we use Marvin William as a six man like Childress was I think we will have something very powerful brewing lets keep our fingers cross this maybe the year. Thanks

Posted by: Anonymous on August 10, 2008 6:30PM EST
If we are lucky enough to add the pieces the Line up will look like this.
PG Bibby backup Pargo and Law
SG Johnson backup Evans and Richardson
SF Smith backup Williams and Hunter
PF Horford backup Solomon
C Elson backup Morrison and ZaZa(You need an extra big

Speedy and Mario as needed or on the bubble.

Posted by: Anonymous on August 10, 2008 6:40PM EST

great with resigning J-Smooth .

and btw why don't they sign any player from Euroleague .

Posted by: Anonymous on August 11, 2008 6:24AM EST
i hope we can get some of these FA

eddie jones
jamaal magloire
j.r smith
lindsey hunter
carl landry
dikembe mutombo
alono mourning
dorell wright
janelo pargo
bonzi wells
michael finley

Posted by: Anonymous on August 11, 2008 6:54AM EST
kelvin cato and danny fortson...both bigs are excellent defenders and rebounders back when they were still in their respective teams. there might be some problem with their conditioning but i hope they still have something left in their tank. and find chemistry in our team.

i also want to add j.r smith, however his locker room presence is a concern but hey he's an intstant offense and his style of game fits our team. eddie jones? not sure if he can still produce. magloire, i think he can do something good for our team. lindsey hunter i think is an underrated pg be he can be a good addition in our team we need his leadership specialy his tenacious defense. he can also guard a sg he's done a great job in detroit. carl landry? is he really good? mutombo is much like mourning. a hard worker and like mourning he has the biggest heart in their team and a hustle player. they can still block shots and rebound but their very old. dorell wright? he needs to improve his perimeter shooting but i've seen him play really well when he was with miami he reminds me of dwade when he was a rookie? i must be crazy? but has less potential.f he'll develop his shooting he can be a perfect fit in our team like j.r. pargo? a reliable pg, i was really impressed by his performace in the playoffs he can be a great sixth man for our team a good boost for our team. bonzi wells? he's a good forward who can play excellent defense and slash inside. i ws impressed by his performance when he was with the kings. but his locker room presence is also a concern he might not be a good fit in our team. michaek finley? he's really old....

these are only my opinion. i hope we can get a good FA this year to add depth in our bench. good teams have good starters...playoff teams however have good starters and bench. mind you guys we won't be a contender by only having a good starting lineup.

I love my hawks i hope we'll have a good run this year. God bless our team!

Posted by: Manu on August 11, 2008 11:44AM EST
Mama,
ring the bells!!!! Now we can play 4 the division leading!!!!! Now will be perfect add JR Smith...

Posted by: sam on August 11, 2008 11:44AM EST
Lets go hawks.New I dout on who read this but theres something I would like to try coach Woodson. Picking up RANDOPH MARRIS sounds good a 6'11 259pound center and MAURICE EVANS over there siting down ready to come in is good then to top it with geting JOSH back. Lets try puting RANDOPH at center,AL at power,JOSH at small,JOE at shooting,MIKE at point thats what we should try in camp.

Posted by: Anonymous on August 11, 2008 12:13PM EST
not a bad idea Sam but if the hawks can pick up a center they should simple because we have an 80 game season and we really don't know what we will get out of Morris and ZaZa we all know he have his good days and bad also he is accident prone and he spend as much time on the floor as he do standing up.

Posted by: G Rob on August 11, 2008 12:32PM EST
Great re-signing of SMITH, however we need to trade some of the role players for a better Big Guy, Al Horford is a good defender against big men so is Smith but we need one guy that is bigger then them to carry us all the way. I would trade Zaza and M. Williams or claxton, more likely claxton with the pick up of M. Evans for One Big guy that can defend, rebound and score down low.

Posted by: hawksfan5 on August 11, 2008 12:45PM EST
yall come on everbody knows we should have gotten rid of woodson for all i care he can suck some wood

Posted by: hawksfan5 on August 11, 2008 12:48PM EST

trade M. Williams for Mike Miller, we need another big shooter. 4sho!

Posted by: Brian on August 11, 2008 1:49PM EST
Go Hawks

Posted by: sumone on August 11, 2008 3:36PM EST
one name.... .............Center Lamarcus Aldrige........with Oden returning to their line up..his time will be limited..he wouldnt mind coming in and be our starting center all the way......we could totally trade for this guy....he can defend (long arms)..has excellent post up play..and can take the mid range shot....

i like previous comment about getting another big shooter like Mike Miller....

Posted by: Eric on August 11, 2008 6:09PM EST
Mike Bibby, Al Horford, Joe Johnson, Josh Smith....that's playoffs for sure. With a decent center, who knows how far the Hawks will go in the post season. I agree that we should work on getting Lamarcus Aldridge from Portland, if it's possible.

Posted by: Hawks fan on August 11, 2008 6:21PM EST
like eric said bibby, joe,al,smith is playoffs and bibby will now have a better understaning of the offense i say we win about 46 games if all players stay healty and play at a high level

Posted by: Hawks Chick on August 11, 2008 7:22PM EST
FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!
OMG, what took sooo long ASG, what were you guys doing all this freakin time??
You guys finally did something right!!

I'm soooo glad this is out of the way, they can now focus on trying to improve the team.
We have a great core
Joe, Josh, Al, Mike, and Marvin!!

Oh and Hawk haters should shut it, would you not be happy if the second best player on your team was staying.

Also learn how to read, if you like the Raps sooooo much then go to the Raptors site, this is HAWKS.COM!!!!!

GO HAWKS!!!!!

Posted by: Anonymous on August 11, 2008 8:24PM EST
Eric that's a good idea but I think they may want to much for him. I say go after a 7 foot like Elson not to expensive and he can deflex shots and give Josh and Al second chance rebounding opportunities something we did not have much of last season and this really hurt out team last season we did a lot of one and done because the other team have big guys.

Posted by: T-Rock on August 12, 2008 6:32PM EST
Elson will be the best fit for the hawks right now we have a great team but with Elson we be Easten Conference Champ's

Posted by: gadawgs on August 12, 2008 7:59PM EST
This is a great move...if only Sund could have hired Avery or Flip this would have been perfect! But what did he do? he went and extended Woodson's contract SMH... I'm afraid Josh and Woodson are gonna get into it again...

Posted by: Dunkadelic TV on August 13, 2008 2:03AM EST
Josh Smith is one of the most explosive dunkadelic small forwards in the league. He's only 22 or 23. He's just learning how to play real NBA basketball. Keeping him after losing Josh Childress to Europe was important to the growth of the team after their performance against Boston in first round of the 2008 NBA playoffs.

Posted by: vini on August 13, 2008 10:27AM EST
atlanta hawks is going to be the same.nothing change.with this mentality we are 9 on the east again.what you are tolking about Eric or whatever. We have player.Big Z.and Solomon. This team need 1-a COASH 2- a guard. With Biby we can not do nothing. He is done.I think he come for vacation in our team. 3-J Johnson need to be on wright place.4-Al have to be in 4,because he can not defense big players. With those cheep owners hawks cant do nothing.

Posted by: shIO on August 13, 2008 10:39AM EST
hey man.please bring lorenzo wright.what u tolking, bring this or this player. We have players enough is enough. One think change the coach and u will see.Everybody is tolking about players.Thats wrong. The main problem is coach.Good luck Hawks.take averybody and keep going with Woodson.I have a idea.why we dont sell Woodson uniform

Posted by: Dee on August 13, 2008 3:18PM EST
Could this be the year that the Hawks break the .500 mark? I surely hope so. Last year was just the tip of the iceberg, when it came down to Hawks basketball. I realistically see a 46 to 48 win team. The Hawks need to play more defense, overall. Silly raptor fans, Atlanta will beat Toronto at least 3 times this year. Quit hatin on the progress the Hawks have. 2 to 3 years away from the top of the league. Watch!

Posted by: G Rob on August 14, 2008 1:05PM EST
Trade Zaza for somebody he does not score enough, he is good offensive rebounder though but we need some one that going to rebound and put points on the board someone like Josh Smith or Horford just with more height, some one that brings the excitement to the Highlight factory. Someone like the old What were hawks thinking we had JR Rider, Rasheed Wallace, Jim Jackson, MOOKIE, Stacey Augmon, I know some of them got old but Rasheed had years left in him look what he did in detroit, why do they always trade the big name players?

Posted by: kevin jordan on August 14, 2008 5:39PM EST
perfect.. we will have at least three people on the all star team next yeara... al joe josh mike... boston is too old and not athletic enough to stop us now,, and our bench is too deep.. now istead of one great 6 man.. we have 3 that could even start on other teams.. WE DONT NEED A TRUE CENTER.. we to athletic and a real center will slow us down.. thats whats wrong wit the suns now.. if marvin williams finally step up to his potential.. we will be unstopable ... i am jus extreemly happy that they did the smartest thing... we might be number one seed for the next five years..... somebody doing something right.. 2008 the best year ever for america.. HAWKS BECOME A DYNASTY... OBAMA WILL BE PRESIDENT... I GRADUATED FROM HIGH SCHOOL... USA WINNING EVERY OLYMPIC GAME... WHAT ELSE CAN U ASK FOR... WHATS NEXT... VICK COMING BACK TO THE FALCONS

Posted by: Anonymous on August 15, 2008 3:40AM EST
I don't know what ya'll gettin hype for. that's just confirming his trade to detroit for tayshaun and amir johnson. Josh will be in a pistons uniform next year. DEEE-TROIT BASKET-BALL still runnin the EAST !

Posted by: G Rob on August 15, 2008 9:07AM EST
VICK COMING BACK would be great but I doubt he will ever be in a falcons uniform again. we will be some big contenders in East, and Josh Smith isnt going anywhere he from the A and going stay in the A

Posted by: flash on August 16, 2008 1:03AM EST
Josh Smith sells tickets with his great athletic ability. He can block shots and dunk with the best of him, but he has no basketball intelligence at all. If he can stop shooting 3's and making dumb turnovers, he can become one of the best in the league. With his freakish athleticism, it would have been ignorant to not resign him, however, there is a lot for him to improve on. With that being said, add a center that can run (Not Randolph Morris) and the Hawks could make a deep run in the playoffs, forget just makin it! Bench is getting deeper, but need a athletic center...

Posted by: Patrick Foster on August 17, 2008 12:20PM EST
thank god for a minute i thought we were goin to lose smith but i am glad we are getting him back and others all talk about the celtics big 3 but see we got our big 4 too but really you can say the whole team but Josh Smith, Joe Johnson, Mike Bibby, and Al Horford....this year we will be contenders for the nba championship and just think no one thought we could make it past game 4 with the celtics but we did and i am lookin forward jus like the rest of the hawks fans are to this upcoming season......

WE BELIEVE!!!!!!!

Posted by: G Rob on August 18, 2008 1:02PM EST
Robert Horry and Juwan Howard I like those 2 to come to the hawks one of them they have the veterean experience and can help the younger players and Horry has always been the one to win the game no matter what team he goes to he is a great 4th quarter player, and great shooter he would be a great role player to have in Atlanta

Posted by: atl on August 21, 2008 6:13PM EST
HEI, DID U GUYS HEAR ABOUT THAT 7'2" CENTER FROM THE IRAN NATIONAL TEAM??HE'S BEEN GIVEN THE "OK" TO SIGN WITH AN NBA TEAM.
HE'S PRETTY GOOD..AVERAGING 17 POINTS AND 10 BOARDS (AROUND) THAT AREA DURING THE OLYMPICS AND POSTED AROUND 23 POINTS AND 15 BOARDS AGAINST THE DEFENDING CHAMPS ARGENTINA...
I DONT KNOW,,HE'D MAKE A GUD CENTER AND NOT COST TOO MUCH..........WHICH THE TEAM IS MORE WORRIED ABOUT..."COST"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

not a bad offseason hawks

picked up like 6 free agents

there isn't anything wrong with that

i still think we need a proven center

but we now have offense, with Murray, Evans, and Gardner

and we got some more big bodies and rebounding with Morris, and Hunter

also increased defense more with Evans

and with Marvin being able to shoot the three now

looks pretty good for hawks

you need to get josh smith a shooting trainer too
then he will average 25 a game if he can shoot with consistency

Posted by: Mellie Mel on August 26, 2008 3:51PM EST
Now all they need is a big man and they'll be straight!

I am simply elated that the hawks will keep Josh Smith. Imagine the roster with Joe Johnson, Al Horford, Zaza P., and a pretty good coach in Mike Woody. We are going to have that fia for many years to come. If all the players remain with the Hawks and then you have to acknowledge the trades that will take place for some of the more scruber players and then the drafts and then the Ha-ha yea baby, yes sir, it's going down in the A-town. We are going to be even better in years to come. The Hawks have pretty much all the pieces. I mean look and see what the Atlanta Hawks did last year. We were on the verge of shocking the world. It's definetly going to be a special year for the Atlanta Hawks indeed. Hopefully I ain't just dreaming but I feel as if the Atlanta Hawks will be NBA champs this year. It's all about them Atlanta Hawks. Definetly this year and for years to come of course after we get a real center the Atlanta Hawks are going to be something serious. Yea once we do that and move Al Horford to 1 forward his official position. We will achieve our mission and become the new NBA champs for years to come. Yea I'm just imagining that happening wih such glee mentally I'm saying ooo-wee. This roster maintence makes me sincerly happy.
