Hawks Continue To Build Roster, Sign Murray

Coming on the heels of Maurice Evans, Randolph Morris, Othello Hunter, and Thomas Gardner, the Hawks continued to reshape the roster today with another free agent signing.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present: Ronald "Flip" Murray, newest Hawk and a guy who has the potential to fill a role the Hawks have been missing for the last several years - bench gunner. Dude can score.

For those that aren't familiar with his exploits, I'll give you a brief recap of his career:

Murray burst onto the scene in Seattle in 2003-04, stepping in for an injured Ray Allen to provide scoring for the Sonics, eventually appearing in all 82 games that season. He has bounced around a bit since then, playing for Detroit, Cleveland, and Indiana, but he's been a capable scorer at all stops and has shown the ability to start when needed.

The thing I like about Murray's game is his ability to create his own shot, a skill not many Hawks possess save for Joe Johnson and Mike Bibby (though I think Acie Law is developing). He's a vet, he's been in the playoffs, and he gives the team another shooter to take some of the pressure off our starters.

What do you think?

we don't need flip murray but whatever.

yeah okay

Hawks need all the offense they can get, I think flip
will help the team.

Posted by: ty on August 13, 2008 5:13PM EST
least the hawks are trying to get better

Posted by: WTF? on August 13, 2008 5:15PM EST
Now we're signing all of the cast-offs from the Washington Generals? Who are these "free agent" signings? This is "building a roster" in the CBA, not the NBA! The incompetence of the Hawks front office is only surpassed by the incompetence of the Thrashers and Don Waddell.

Posted by: Marc on August 13, 2008 5:21PM EST
WHO? Randolph Morris? Othello Hunter? Thomas Gardner? WOW! The Hawks are just loading up on free agent talent! NOT! I'm sure these guys will complement Speedy Claxton off of the bench. Wait, Speedy stubbed his toe and was out for two years. It's gonna be a long freaking year.

Posted by: big man on August 13, 2008 5:22PM EST
we really need a big man

Posted by: Jon on August 13, 2008 5:22PM EST
Flip's assist to turnover ratio is not very good. We would still rather be frugal than good! I still think someone like Michael Finley would have been a better fit but hey what do I know...I'm just a fan.

Posted by: Josh on August 13, 2008 5:33PM EST
Great signing! Keep it going Hawks!

Posted by: Anonymous on August 13, 2008 6:27PM EST
Ha over half the people on the hawks roster are Guards 10 to be exact do anyone else other than myself see a problem with that about four of them are G-F I got news for you a guy 6"5 in this league don't have any business playing Forward he's too small and is strictly a guard.

Posted by: Danny on August 13, 2008 6:28PM EST
at least we are signing free agents. not a bad sign by the way flip will help this team.

Posted by: C.O.G's finest on August 13, 2008 6:33PM EST
I really don't understand this one. We already have law and evens at the 1 and 2 guard positions. Plus the D-League guy. I think Micheal Finley would have been a better choice to come in and give us better depth at the 3 spot.

Posted by: Tonio on August 13, 2008 6:35PM EST
Ronald "Flip'Murray is a good addition!I think he's gonna add depth to our bench!Minus J-Chills=Morris +Evans=Murrary!I think the new GM Is tryna build a chemistry! We haven't had a good bench since The late 90's!Now the question is can we make It back to the playoff!!!

Posted by: Anonymous on August 13, 2008 6:39PM EST
I hope Joe have a lazier range finder on his jump shot. Josh and Al good luck and I hope you guys don't be on the injury reserve list come mid-season due to exhaustion a roster load with guards is going to be hard to handle. Good Luck

Posted by: Dookey Booty on August 13, 2008 6:43PM EST
I understand why we're getting all of these free agents. The reasons why the ATL is signing all of these free agents is so during the trading session we can acheive the goal of getting a young big man from another team.

Posted by: DHD on August 13, 2008 6:46PM EST
That will fill the seats. Good job, owners.

Posted by: Anthony on August 13, 2008 6:54PM EST
It's a great signing. If you think about it, we had NO ONE coming off the bench that could create there own shot. Flip can do that. I would be comfortable with a line up like acie law, flip, evans, horford, zaza in when the majority of the starters are resting

Posted by: Anonymous on August 13, 2008 6:57PM EST
I see a lot of strategy from opposing teams hawk fans ie Toronto,Milwaukee, Boston Detroit and New jersey creating mis match posting up guards similar to what Joe do and Josh / Al coming over to help out and getting themselves into foul trouble. HELLO

Posted by: Anonymous on August 13, 2008 7:05PM EST
If some of these guys are leading up to a trade for a big man I understand but if this is the roster management want to go into the season with I see a whole lot of problems. Good Luck

Posted by: LeGere on August 13, 2008 7:51PM EST
Seriously? You should all step back and realize that this was the youngest team in the playoffs last year, and still went to game 7 with the world champions. do you really think it was the bench that took us? no! besides childress. And i am pretty sure Evans can fill those shoes. . . Horford will be ten times better next year, joe will be joe times and smith, yea watch out for him, he might make the All Star Game. Quote me.

Posted by: Clark on August 13, 2008 7:52PM EST
Great pick up. We need him now that Childress is gone

Posted by: hawks in 08-09 on August 13, 2008 8:53PM EST
i don't know much about flip murray. guess i'll go research some vids of him and get to know his skills and what he brings to the team.

better you than me asg and rick sund. so much talent to choose from but so much limited space on the team.

anywayz, looking forward to the season and lets go hawks.

Good pickup Hawks, Flip Murray. and Hey LeGere, yeah i gotta admit i'm impressed with Hawk's performance vs. Boston Celtics. But they lost in 7 games. Flip Murray will help Hawks get better with his scoring and experiences but they still won't beat Boston Celtics anyway. GO BOSTON CELTICS!

SHAW U!!!!!!!!!!!!

U KNO!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: khiry on August 13, 2008 10:26PM EST
Nice pickup, we needed a true scorer off the bench who can create his own shot. He should play sg where he's more effective and let Acie Law develop, because he was a lottery pick and needs start sometime soon like the next 2yrs. Maurice Evans should come in for defensive purposes; very good pickups, not quite Josh Childress but close to it. We should try to get Lamarcus Aldridge; we may have to alot but we have to get a young center to develop a duo with him and horford. Once horford develops a midrange shot then we can have an in and out presence. If we get Aldridge, We can have Bibby, JJ, J Smoove, Horford, and Aldridge. Let Marvin Williams be the 6th man and let him play both forward spots because he's added weight this offseason and is working on his 3pt which could help with some mismatches. We should definitely get rid of Speedy trade him or something. Randolph Morris im not too sure of but you could never know, if he can grab boards and play good defense that's all we need. Zaza uhh idk. But this squad would be better and deeper if we had Aldridge, who is young and a player we need. Let me know what yall think...

Posted by: Anonymous on August 13, 2008 10:53PM EST
that was a good pick up for the hawks because there really wasnt a good back up point guard. Acie Law wasnt getting playing time anyways during the season it would be a good choice to trade him for a up coming center or forward

Posted by: Anonymous on August 13, 2008 11:18PM EST
With so many guards on the roster now, its obvious to see there is going to be a trade for a big man soon.

Posted by: C mart on August 13, 2008 11:29PM EST
Not sure why we did this. Flip's okay but we are getting heavy with these guards. Bibby is the guy, Acie needs more pt. we still have to do something with Speedy. we never let Salim do his magic (eventhough he doesn't play D he can still shoot) we picked up Evans....enough already with the second string dudes. I want to know what our rotation is going to be. Bibby, Joe, Josh (Marvin), Josh (Horford or Marvin), Zaza(Morris or Horford) anybody got a clue??????

Posted by: carey on August 13, 2008 11:32PM EST
Everybody keeps saying get big men. Where the hell are these big men? I know, nowhere to be found because most of them are sorry. The NBA is a Forward's league. Michael Finley can't give the minutes he used to. Flip can score and the hawks did not have that last year off the bench. To often we get caught up in names. So explain to me way Denver can't win? Boston won because they were a team. Because on paper they were not the most talented team in the league. The Hawks of the 80's only had Tree Rollins and 6'8" Dan Roundfield, Doc and Nique and a cast of role players and consistently won because of teamwork. It is sad to see that fans no longer recognize that talent with no teamwork equals failure. Being big and playing same is common with bigs. So, why is it 6'8 guys are some of the best in rebounding and block shots? Take a look:
Bibby( Acie and Flip),
Joe (Evans and Flip, Richardson(hopefully),
Marvin (Evans, Garner),
JSmoove (Hunter, Al)
Big Al (ZaZa, Morris)
West might make the squad. What you now have is a team with interchangeable parts. Now we have scoring on the floor at all time, this is what killed us LY. Learn the game people.

Ronald Murray's Kinda a shooter and energy we need. goooooood job!!

Now pls trade salim and mario!

Posted by: b on August 13, 2008 11:59PM EST
HI,GUYS!MARK MY WORDS A TRADE IS COMING UP FOR THE HAWKS.WE ARE GETTING A CENTER-FRANCISCO ELSON.HE IS NOT GREAT BUT WILL HELP US IN MID.

Posted by: Will on August 14, 2008 12:08AM EST
It's an okay signing.

I just hope this doesn't mean that Richardson and West are both guaranteed OUT of the team. I really rather have Jeremy Richardson be brought back. Was a beast in the D-League and always a beast when given minutes.

I wouldn't be surprise if Mario isn't brought back though. The only thing Mario did was guard two guards but we signed Maurice Evans who can also guard two guards just as well as Mario, plus he has a jumper and slashing abilities.

ALL I'm HOPING is that Jeremy Richardson stays with the Hawks and given some bench minutes at least. So many teams have called him up from the D-League and released him. So many teams passed up on him without giving him a chance. I say, sign Richardson to training camp and let him prove himself. I think he'll be a great backup to Joe Johnson, he could be like a Jason Kapono type player.

Please ASG, do that!!

Posted by: timtim on August 14, 2008 12:09AM EST
great job hawks we need a guy like that.

Posted by: Mikey on August 14, 2008 1:26AM EST
This is a good signing by the Hawks.

Posted by: Masood on August 14, 2008 3:24AM EST
Anyone who doesn't see what Sund is doing here doesn't know NBA basketball. Every move isn't designed to sell tickets. Didn't we just give Josh Smith almost $12 million a year to do that? Murray is a guy that can come in and give you quality play at 2 positions off the bench. If a starter goes down, he can fill in adequately. Depth is a luxury in the NBA, and with Evans, Murray, Law, Zaza, Morris, and Solomon, the Hawks have more depth than the average NBA team.

We have to stop thinking and commenting like fans of a losing team guys. Open your eyes -- we're not one anymore! It's time to support our team, and get off the backs of Sund and the ASG. Losing Childress aside, they've done a stellar job with this roster this summer.

Posted by: Student of the game on August 14, 2008 3:28AM EST
Flip murry was a great addition to the hawks we now have another player who can drop 15 to 20 points on any giving night, we need offens for the nights when joe johnson is off, ah-la ben gordan for the bulls thats what flip murry is for the hawks go home team go

Posted by: Anonymous on August 14, 2008 6:54AM EST
murrayt sucks you should get kg

Posted by: LithoniaHal on August 14, 2008 9:35AM EST
Great pick-up hawks. The team has been lacking some legitimate scoring off the bench and this addresses that concern. I like the aquisition of Randolph Morris also. Watched him in high school up against Howard and he held his own. Like Student of the game said great addition, thanks for the 15 to 20 points a night.

Posted by: kungfuwill on August 14, 2008 9:51AM EST
we should get KG. That guy is a GENIUS!!
Do you think any Hawks fans didn't want him? I think the talk of gathering free agents in preparation for a big man trade is only speculation . ASG doesn't even know what is happening. I want a big man on the team, but who? I'll take Aldridge, or Elson, but don't expect those guys to be the answer. I like Flip. Not a bad pick-up.

Posted by: Zaddison on August 14, 2008 10:40AM EST
Although I like Murray, I'm not so sure he helps us. Granted, we definitely need scoring off the bench, particulary outside scoring. Pargo would have been better suited to fill this void. Plus, Acie Law only lacks confidence in his ability to score, a problem that can only be remedied with more minutes. Murray's acquisition gurantees decreased minutes for Law.

Posted by: Anonymous on August 14, 2008 10:46AM EST
Hawk fans a big is just to keep other teams from posting up and requiring a double team it keep everything honest Morris could be the answer I really don't know the unsure part is what bothers me it's a gamble. The rest of the areas are find im not worry about Joe against any 2 guard or Josh against any small forward or Al up against any power forward mismatch is the problem and if those guys get into foul trouble it will be hugh.

Posted by: Willie Noble on August 14, 2008 11:10AM EST
Alot of the emailers are crazy. Flip can go off for 30 or 40 on any game. ya'll fans are crazy to say ya'll don't know who flip is. watch the game before ya'll comment. this stuff make me sick. ya'll lucky he didn't go to O'town with Dwight. ya'll would have been asking who is this guy go off like that

Posted by: Anonymous on August 14, 2008 11:48AM EST
been a hawks fan for awhile, look, seeing the hawks play like they did in the playoffs was a very positive thing to me,.. i mean ever since the 90's ended, we've sucked.. To watch us play at times was embarrassing. But now , now were coming together, its great to add supporting cast, and yes we need a big man, but now that we have come together, dont tear that apart to start adding "big name free agents",..were gonna get there, the key is chemistry, which is what we have. So good job and lets go hawks!!

Posted by: Anonymous on August 14, 2008 12:12PM EST
Be real KG is not coming to Atlanta and the comments im hearing about just because you like a player is not reason for the team to acquire them You build a team on need. I like Kobe but do you think we need him no the position is filled already and the player is doing a good job.

Posted by: Atlplayer on August 14, 2008 12:13PM EST
well drafting Flip Murray gives us more of a reason to trade speedy to get a foward/center. So hurry up and trade him.

Posted by: Hawks will never get media attention that we soon will deserve more than ever on August 14, 2008 12:29PM EST
Good pickup. This guy really can score. If you don't believe me, check out a couple of his mixes on YouTube. He can light it up and go to the hole strong. Adds sure depth to our Roster

Posted by: jdewayneatl on August 14, 2008 12:39PM EST
Aside from the Josh Childress situation, I love what the Hawks have done this summer. They have added some quality free agents that have proven nba experience in Flip and Mo Evans and a big man prospect in Morris that will solidify a better bench than last year. We all know that the starting five will improve to be even better than last year but now we have a quality bench to add. On any given night the Hawks could go 11 deep easily with Law, Murray, Evans, Morris, Zaza always in the mix and with Solo, J. Rich wanting to get into the action too. And don't be surprised if Othello Hunter gets some burn (i think that he is a sleeper that could surprise this year).

And for those that don't know Flip and why he is such a good addition, check the link below.

Great move by the Hawks! Flip also brings a toughness that we need, and he also has a flare
to his game the crowd will love. I think this team needs his energy and I know they will feed off it!

Posted by: GA.BOY72 on August 14, 2008 1:09PM EST
#22 is available! lol... Glad to have you hear FLIP! Just score like John Drew did when he wore #22, but don't follow any other of his patterns!!!!

Posted by: Mike Phillips on August 14, 2008 1:32PM EST
People in the league (NBA) know Flip Murray as a scorer. That's what the hawks need, someone who can create their own shot and give the hawks another scoring option when Joe Johnson needs a breather. Great Pickup!

Posted by: Anonymous on August 14, 2008 2:23PM EST
I agree Flip Murray is a good pickup and management have done a good job in filling our weaknesses I just hope we can pick up another big man some where down the line.

Posted by: Dino on August 14, 2008 2:55PM EST
thats great and everything, but now you have 4 point guards. trade speedy or just release him

Posted by: Jonathan on August 14, 2008 4:52PM EST
pretty good pickup the management team did a good job this offseason now trade/release speedy and sign richardson!

Posted by: Dan on August 14, 2008 5:00PM EST
Flip is more of a 2 guard. The hawks really didn't have any scoring role players coming off the bench last season (besides Childress). Adding Flip and Evans provides much needed offense from the bench, not to mention they are pretty good defensively as well. We certainly need defense on this team.

Posted by: justin on August 14, 2008 5:07PM EST
i love this move yo!! he is such a great role player!!

Posted by: Josh on August 14, 2008 5:42PM EST
picking up flip murray is a solid aquisition to a team that struggled offensively at times. We have our best bench since the days of team players 1 and 2 and ed gray and chris crawford. Yo, we didn't "draft" flip murray and ever who thinks kg would come to atl is on some stupid. Bibby is going to bust threes, Joe is going to bust threes, horford and zaza are gonna do work on the boards, marvin is going to hit the mid range j and smoove and evans are going to be dunking on people, plus our defense has been upgraded, we will win 45 games and snag the 5 seed in the postseason that the wizards always seem to get.

Posted by: HAWKS FAN FROM DAY ONE on August 14, 2008 8:07PM EST
I may have offered judgment on poor ol' Rick a bit too soon. Chiils bounced on us because management was seemingly dragging their feet. Sorry to see him go, but we may have benefitted in the long run with all of the recent additions. More on that in a minute...

Easy to say this now, but I kinda figured that management would wait on some team to offer Smoove a deal before they re-signed him. OK, he's back now. I just hope he plays like he wants to be here. We want you here, Josh!!

On to the recent additions.....

My only question is, how much is the team payroll and salary cap this year?? How much more money did we make by getting into the playoffs?? How are all of these guards gonna get paid?? LMFAO

Ronald "Flip" Murray (great pick-up, I hope)
Maurice Evans
Randolph Morris (hometown cat always welcome!)
Thomas Gardner
Othello Hunter (the SLEEPER of all the acquisitions!)

Then we got guys like Solomon Jones, Mike Bibby, Mario West, Salim Stoudamire, Jeremy Richardson.....I'm a bit confused. Are these my same benchless, no rotation having Hawks??

Before I go into this, let me also address you bloggers who keep throwing in the names of GUYS WHO WE DO NOT HAVE OR ARE NOT THINKING OF GETTING! You guys are sad. I don't want to keep reading about LaMarcus Aldridge, ok?

Back to the suddenly bloated bench of the Hawks, what are now....27 deep? JJ, Acie, Big Al, Zaza...ok, enough is enough. Look, someone ain't making it to training camp, so let's look at the facts. Yes, we are guard heavy. Not too long ago, people were complaining about us being the "6'9" Mafia". You can't please everyone. For those who think Bibby's a basketball god, let me be the first to rain on your parade. Bibby's out of here come the trading deadline this year. I'd bet anything on it. His contract is too much for the wack ass performance he put on going into and well throughout the playoffs last year. I also agree that a big man is needed. I am not going to get caught up in names and fantasy basketball. I believe a package will be put together with Bibby somehow involved. After what I saw last year, outside of him being a true floor general, we don't need his offensive sputtering. When he's on, he's on. When he's off, it's a rainy night in Georgia.

I just hope we somehow can pay ALL these guys to make the team because the bench is the reason why we couldn't knock off the champs last season.

What a difference a year can make.....

You guys on this blog bug me with these salary concerns. How much money this and much money that. IT IS NOT MONEY! DON"T WORRY ABOUT IT! In fact, for the most part, the only salaries (of these new players) worth talking about is Evans and Flip. The rest of these role players salary are irrelevant. Some may not even make the final roster.

Posted by: bobby micheals on August 15, 2008 8:02PM EST
WOW!!!! WE REALLY HAVE A NICE BENCH NOW........ NOW ALL WE NEED IS J.R SMITH ( AS A STARTER) PUT HIM AT SG, MOVE JOE UP 2 SF, PUT MARVIN ON THE BENCH AND WE WILL BE THE BEST

Posted by: mordie askew on August 15, 2008 8:50PM EST
Don't listen to these guys that no nothing about basketball. Good pickup; the team continues to grow. Although we lost J-Chill we have made up for it good with free agents. I like the moves the organization has made. I do think this can spell the ene of Speedy in a Hawks uniform. No big loss

Posted by: Anthony Davis on August 16, 2008 1:33AM EST
Ok, Atlanta needs a 7'0 or lil bit higher man and okay get a playoff experience man but get a high man that can take shaq, yao and other big men

Coach Woodson needs to demand respect from his players, Especially Josh Smith. being in the Nba is a blessing. If you want to be a superstar in the league, make your team better. Stop being spoiled. Play within your game, stop having public disagreements with Coach Woodson. I'm sure that he has forgotten more basketball than you know. Listen to him.

how the heck and why would we get j.r. smith

Posted by: Paul on August 16, 2008 3:28PM EST
The only reason I can think the hawks would make such a move is because they possibly have a deal involving Marvin Williams and Speedy Claxton...for a center.....that wouldnt be bad either..moving Josh Smith to small forward and letting the newly aquired players fight for back up rolls. One things for sure, this hawks team looks like they are going to be running up and down the court.

Posted by: Anonymous on August 16, 2008 3:52PM EST
I dont know why everyones getting all excited over Flip..hes just there to fill out the roster..he'll probably only see garbage time!

Posted by: J-Bird on August 16, 2008 5:07PM EST
I like the signing but then again i dont. I think Murray can be a great scorer off the bench for us but i think we already have a guy in Salim Stoudamire who could do that so maybe were wasting money here. Right now the only off season moves i like are the Smith, Evans, Murray deals. If we could get a better bug man back up for zaza, zpeedy, and maybe morris i woul be happy.

Posted by: Anonymous on August 16, 2008 7:54PM EST
Salim Stoudamire will not be wearing a hawks uniform next season. Its well known that he and Mike Woodson dont get along. He would take a pay cut to play elsewhere. He wants out of Atlanta badly. That is the leading factor in signing flip.

Posted by: Anonymous on August 16, 2008 8:04PM EST
J.R. Smith just signed a new contract, and hes overpaid...of course.

Posted by: Anonymous on August 16, 2008 8:13PM EST
The Hawks have signed Maurice Evans, Thomas Gardner, and Flip Murray....TO replace Josh Childress, Mario West, And Salim Stoudamire.......They also signed Randolph Morris....If everyone remembers correctly...the Hawks gave up a young Big Man in last years trade for Mike Bibby. Now they have another young Big man. I like this move (signing Morris) he should develop nicely. He many not make an imediate impact, but give him a year or two to develop. Nice move Hawks. Nobody can fault the hawks for trying to improve. I think they have done just that. The one thing they lack however is an experienced big man coming off the bench. Marcus Camby would be perfect.

okay i am not a hawks fan, in the sense im from toronto so i support them all the way. nonetheless, they are one of the famous underdogs in the league so i still support them. So as far as this murray signing is concerned with, i think its a pretty crap signing. Actually, all of the signings so far by atlanta apart from mo evans are crap! No offense, im all for atlanta to get better, buh the management is soooooo stupid! instead of aiming for a bigger man or even a forward lyke finley, they sign murray. lol. w.e, toronto's got J'oneal now and ford is gone to indi, which means raptors are a contender in the east.
Peece ----GO RAPTORS!

Everyone wants to be a GM.. I understand that the ppl the hawks sign maybe questionable cus yall dont know them but it doesnt effect the team. They Lost a great player in childress but thats it. Its the same team. Randolph Morris is a big body that will push zaza and al for minutes and make them better in practice. I heard Gardner is a drop dead 3pt shooter, which will help stretch the D. Who else on the team can consistantly make shots from deep? And he played with the bulls last yr. Hunter may not be ready since he's fresh out of college, flip is a scorer that can create his own shot. I think its goin to be interesting and Im with the Hawks regardless! Thats what real fans do

its a good deal, and at leat , they wanna get better. and when u need flip murray to gey off the bench, he is doing a great job. Personnaly, im a DETROIT PISTONS fan, i didnt know why the detroit pistons did trade him, it was a bad thing, and the Atlanta Hawks has the right to say that they have a good player getting off the bench. peace y.all

Hey lg

If you know we SUCK like that, then why are you here (on this blog)?

Let me ponder for an answer to that questions for a minute...

I HAVE IT!! That means you must be STUPID!!!

Posted by: Tevin on August 18, 2008 7:27AM EST
Their's nothing wrong with that! It's just making the squad better. We still have joe johnson, josh smith,al horford, and mike bibby. It can't hurt the team. It can only make it better. good decision hawks!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know why everybody think we need a big Man. We are too athletic to be slowing Down for a true. Big man. We got all these 3 point shooters and high flyers now. So why would we get a true big man to slow our point scoring Down. And to get a big man to guard other big men like shaq d Howard and Yao is stupid. Those are the only true centers now and they are impossible to stop. The best way to stop them is to get them in foul trouble by driving our guards into there body and keep running and get them tired because all true big men are lazy. We have a great five and now a experienced bench. So good job gm. But we don't need a true center if that's what u trying to do. It will slow us down. Thanks for your time

PEOPLE KEEP SAYING GET A BIG MAN AT CENTER,BE REAL HOW MANY CHOICES DO THEY HAVE IT IS NOTHING OUT THERE.ALL THE PEOPLE THAT IS HATING ON THE HAWKS YOU DUCKER PLUCKERS NEED TO GET A LIFE.

Hey i don't know why everyone is mad about this signing. What other choices do we have right now? Flip is a guy who can create his own shot and brings playoff experience. I'm glad they a player in FAcy this year and not just signing D-League guys. We need proven NBA talent on our bench! Good Job!

Posted by: mr. hawk on August 18, 2008 9:24PM EST
okay, we play GM. What would all you bloggers do to make this team better? Let me see your realistic Hawks team.

Posted by: GM on August 18, 2008 10:20PM EST
To make this team better, ZaZa needs to do about 5,000 calf raises a day..No offense ZaZa, you're a great offensive rebounder, passer and you got a nice jumper, but damn you got no ups! If he could jump, this team would be complete..But since he can't, I'd keep Horford at C..He held it down as a rookie..He is, and will continue to be a beast in this league!! 20, 10 & 5 avgs..trust me..At PF, of course, we got JSmoove back..nuff said..I'd have Marvin come off the bench..He's still a good shooter, but he's not a team player..I hate playin wit cats like Marv..It makes you not want to cut and hustle because you know he aint lookin to pass..JJ can back down any SF in the post so I think that would be a good fit..Plus you know he can knock down the 3 so it would spread the D to create lanes(Not to mention, now we have like 8 SG's)..At SG, I would start either Flip for offense or Evans for D, depending on who we're playing..Both can knock down the open J..Say what you will about Flip, but I think that was a great move..For anyone who hasn't seen him play, trust me, you're gonna love his game..He can score & he's 6'3'' so he can handle SG..At PG, I would start Acie..It's time to get him adjusted into the NBA..Where is this team going with Bibby? He'll get traded mid year if anyone takes him, and it'll be harder for Law to take over at that time..I say start him from jump..Plus he can really push the ball which is what we need..

So the starting line-up looks like this:
Law
Murray/Evans
Johnson
J.Smith
Horford

And the bench is seriously upgraded:
Bibby/Claxton
Murray/Evans/Gardner
M.Williams/O.Hunter
S.Jones/M.Randolph
Pachulia

Not bad, right?

I don't know what's goin on w/Salim,Richardson & West..If we lost any of them, it would be a shame..Salim & JRich have two of the smoothest jumpers in the NBA, and West plays harder than anyone on the floor..Too many fouls, but it doesn't matter since he comes off the bench..

Before the trade deadline hits, I would trade Bibby, Claxton, Marvin & maybe even ZaZa for an decent C..Then this team can make a serious playoff run..

Then we can start:
Law
JJ
J.Smith
Horford
??????

Hopefully an Aldridge, Kaman, A.Jefferson, Camby, or a Dalembert will fill that C spot..Marvin and Bibby, alone, for any of these guys is reasonable..What do you think?

Posted by: The Truth on August 19, 2008 1:53AM EST
You guys need to show Marvin more love than you do.

Why? Because he missed must of his first year to injury. This past season was his first full season. I don't know about you but I saw a vast improvement compared to his rookie year. He was much more aggressive. Stat wise, Marvin is bringing to the table 14.8 Pts; 5.7 Reb; 1.7 Ast for his season avg. That is not bad for someone who split time with Chil during Qts 1, 2, & 3 and mostly riding the bench during 4th Qt. Keep in mind at 22 yrs old 6"9" now 242 lbs, he is still developing. He can pose match-up problems for sf opponents with his quickness and size. In fact, with Chil gone, Marvin may emerge as being even more pivotal. If you spell him with Evans, you will lose 4" in height. We may not have that luxury when playing some teams with bigger sf. From the current roster, we don't have a bench player that can replace him size-for-size.

Us Hawks Fans need to be more patient with Marvin deveolpment. At least give him 1 more year before kicking him to the curb. You are still upset because we pass on Paul and Deron for Marvin.

LET IT GO!!!!

Posted by: melman on August 19, 2008 10:51AM EST
i damn sho' agree with you THE TRUTH! thats what i have been saying all along, give marvin a chance, and stop whining! paul and deron are history, so stop crying over spoiled milk!!!!

The Hawks will be better this year but not necessarily in terms of their final record or playoff birth.

Mike Woodson needs to go.

Please use half way proper English if you choose to respond to this.

Posted by: VTK on August 20, 2008 11:27AM EST
At least the Hawks realize that they need some scoring. However, If they come out of the box slow, look for a quick coaching change and look for Avery Johnson if he's available.

Posted by: Bonton on August 20, 2008 2:33PM EST
This was a good pick up for ATL. I might be kinda biased because I know Flip personally but I have never seen anyone be able to stop him from scoring playing man to man D. As long as he can hit the outside shot consistently he can easily avg. 15-18 pts a game. He just needs the playing time. For those that don't know him check him out on Youtube and I guarantee you'll be impressed.

why dont the hawks just develope acie law. they did use an 11 pick on him.

KG on the Hawks team, what are you smoking? That fool disrespected a player on our team and for that I will never like or respect him and most definitely will not ever ever ever ever want to see him in a Hawks jersey. I'd rather have a losing team. That's just how much I dislike that clown. The thought or mention of this on this blog makes me gag.

You know the Hawks got em scared now! We got Raptors fans, Bucks fans, Pistons fans, etc. commenting on our blog like we care what they think.

yo "GM" you buggin!!!! with that lineup that would mess up the chemistry and i dont know what you're smokin, you can't be serious. we need to get lamarcus aldridge fas before portland really sees how he develops. I would like to keep marvin williams and let him be a 6th man but if he's in the trade then he's gotta go and try to get rudy fernandez who is impressive

Posted by: Mr. Hawk on August 22, 2008 11:53AM EST
LaMarcus Aldridge, he's athletic and can run the floor. "GM" what can we do to get him? Dalembert, athletic and can run the floor. #1 Lady Fan give me some input. Coach Woodson: Was it good that we re-signed him? Look what Boston done last year. Why can't we?

Posted by: Anonymous on August 22, 2008 4:18PM EST
we should sign that iranian guy hes 7 foot 1

Posted by: GM on August 23, 2008 3:12AM EST
Yo "khiry," that lineup would run the floor better and put up 100+ a night.

"Truth," I like Marvin, but he has no handle. Great jumper, doesn't run the floor well. He turns the ball over a lot, and never looks to pass. I'd be willing to trade him for Aldridge. Oden's coming back, and Aldridge will see less playing time and might want to leave. Rudy Fernandez does look good. Here's my trade proposal:

to ATL to PORT
L.Aldridge M.Williams
R.Fernandez M.Bibby
T.Outlaw S.Claxton
R.Lafrentz Z.Pachulia

Portland needs a PG, so they might be tempted to pick up Bibby, and M.Williams does have potential. I think it would be good for both teams. I'd only take Lafrentz, if I had to, to make the deal work moneywise.

TRADE #2
I would love to get Dalembert if the first trade doesn't work. ATL would automatically become one of the top defensive teams in the NBA.

Here's the offer:

to ATL to PHI
S.Dalembert M.Williams
T.Young M.Bibby
2nd Rd Pick

TRADE #3
to ATL to MIN
A.Jefferson M.Bibby
C.Brewer M.Williams
S.Telfair S.Claxton
Z.Pachulia

Mr. Hawk, we can't do what Boston did, but we came close. This team doesn't need much. Just a good C, role players, and better play calling. I don't think we should have resigned Woodson. When the Hawks get into the halfcourt offense, I rarely see them call any good plays, or even plays, aside from a JJ iso, Marv jumper, or a JSmith awkward looking post up play or airball three. Someone has to get this team to run and when they can't, still hold it down in the halfcourt by running better plays. The Hawks have more athleticism and energy than most teams and we need to use that to our advantage.

Melman, forget about Deron and CP3. They're on the Olympic team and are the two best young PGs in the league. I understand the virtue of patience. But in three years, when Marvin is nasty, they'll be nastier. They're developing too. I don't think about them though. I just think Marvin's good tradebait. And I believe Law will run this team over the next decade. Once he gets more playing time, he'll be one of the best PGs offensively and defensively.

Posted by: Abionix on August 23, 2008 3:32PM EST
Yes it is fine to you so to worry about it! Murray the quite good guy as the player it can diversify game not bad. I support such acquisition, in a makeweight to returning J.Smith are two remarkable news to all fans Atlanta. And at last it would be desirable to address to hawksgirl... The babe, it is not necessary so to worry because of leaving Childress. Yes it the great player and it ыла the big loss, but irreplaceable people does not happen, understand? In a new season we become much better...

Posted by: KHIRY on August 23, 2008 11:00PM EST
I just don't think acie law is ready to run a team. Marvin Williams will be good if you think about it he was only like 18 while cp3 and deron williams both played significant roles on their teams and more experienced mentally for the jump from college to nba. I would like to keep him but as a hawk fan I think we cant get too comfortable because the organization is on its way to making a bad move and it happens every other year. If he doesnt step up his game big time by the end of next year, then he's got to go. JJ should avg like 23 pts 5 rebs 5 assists. J Smoove should avg like 18 pts 9 rebs 2 blocks. Marvin Williams 17 pts 6 rebs. He needs to get range on his shot!!!! I would like to get aldridge and keep marvin williams. Trade zaza, claxton, bibby, and 2nd round pick to Port. for aldridge and fernandez. It would clear up cap room to lock up jj. I like Acie Law but his confidence is low when he was at A&M he was good as hell I liked him the most so I guess he has to get adjusted. We're not winning a championship next yr so I see what GM was sayin. Then the lineup could be:

Acie Law
Joe Johnson
Josh Smith
Al Horford
Lamarcus Aldridge

Bench:
Marvin Williams (play both forward spots and create mismatches, he gain like 15 lbs so he can hold his position on defense with bigger players.)
Flip Murray(Offensive Sparkplug; best at sg, nuf said.)
Mo Evans(Defensive stopper, great in transition)
Rudy Fernandez(Smart player, Good Defensive player, can hit the shot)
Randolph Morris(Big body, grab rebounds, clog the lane; stats wont tell the story.)
Soloman Jones(long, athletic, good in transition, plays good D. Not consistent, im not a fan)
Othello Hunter(Great offensive rebounder, may be the best undrafted player, underated, = Paul Millsap, Carl Laundry?)

For those who are not Hawks fans stay off the blog. Please give your energy to whatever bandwagon team you wish. I've been a fan since the early 80's and it is time for a changing of the guard. We have made more moves this year than any other I can remember.( not to have had a draft pick ). Don't be a fairweather fan.

Most of our fan base are professionals.( The ones who attend the games ), and they are transplants from other cities. And of course their hearts are with "their" teams. Please believe, we are one player away from being something to deal with. So if you are from any other city and love that team, stay on their site. If you are from Atlanta and love other teams stay on their site. And if you are a Hawks Fan, see you at Phillips! BE LOYAL.

very good add, but yeah we need a BIG MAN besides ZA-ZA not that i have a problem with him but u know

Posted by: Anonymous on August 26, 2008 2:04PM EST
Mr. Hawk I agree with you we are one player away from a very powerful team. I really don't understand why management did not go after a versatile center it just don't add up I really like the free agent pickup that was made but im telling you it won't mean a thing without another big look at New Jersey roster they have 7 bigs so you know what their intensions are this year and they aren't the only ones look at the Raptors and take a look at the bucks , Miami will be better Pistons will be Pistons and please don't forget about the west. I am a hawk fan I guess we will have to waite and see. May God be with us Hawk fans

The constant cry for another BIG could have unexpected consequences at the 3 & 4 position. If the plan is to keep ZA-ZA and pickup a 4th BIG behind Morris, than that could be a waste of money. Why; because Woody does not normally play a deep bench. He would see very little playing time. If he is a "blue chip" BIG, than AL would have to move to 4 and Josh would move to the 3 position. Then Marvin would spell Josh. But do you really want that? Josh at the 3 position? That would be a disastrous season. Josh is way too inconsistent with his jump shoot to play sf on a regular bases. He has a lot of work to do with that part of his game. He could ultimately get there, but not now. The 3 position bread and butter is his perimeter jump shoot.

Maybe instead of adding another BIG, we upgrade the BIG position. In other words, we trade ZA-ZA for a better BIG to spell AL.

Posted by: Anonymous on August 26, 2008 6:04PM EST
I agree with that I think ZaZa have been given amber amount of time and some night he show up and others he sit on the bench collecting let face it he is not a very good decision maker thats why Woody was getting upset with him. The truth what I was talking about was AL at the 4 and yes Josh at the 3 Josh always play away from his game what I mean about that is Josh is a slasher quick everytime he take the ball to the basket good things happen and the most important part is he open the floor up to drive or dish off thats his strong point and it helped the team during that Celtic series and it an advantage he can over power an small forward and would require a double team which will open up the power forward or the shooting guard.

Posted by: The Truth on August 26, 2008 6:48PM EST
Anonymous, I agree with your description of Josh's game. He is a slasher. That is why he does his most damage when he is matched against a Big 4 or 5. Why; because they are even slower then a sf. That Boston matchup problem you described was against KG. However, if you put him at the sf, he still creates a mismatch; but he is forced out in the perimeter with a one dimensional offensive game. If they closed down the lanes to slash, he is shooting jump shoots all night. That will play to his weakness right on.

Posted by: Anonymous on August 27, 2008 7:34AM EST
Good point The truth it's been great talking to you. Lets hope the team get off to a very good start this year and let the others chase us for a change.

Posted by: DreGoose on August 27, 2008 1:25PM EST
This is kinda off subject, but why not sign a solid defensive 7'' footer to the roster. I feel that they would be a better team with someone that can rebound, blockshots, and score about ten a game.(besides Horford the real R.O.Y.) Snatching Flip Murray was a great move he can play "D" and score off the bench, they are going to have a pretty good season. GO HAWKS!!!!

Posted by: philly fan on August 27, 2008 7:04PM EST
yall should be happy that yall got flip murray. Atlanta does need him. cuz AC Law and the other bench players cant put it in the bucket like he can. and he has a lot of heart!

Posted by: Physue S, Kromah on August 30, 2008 12:07PM EST
For hawks to be a good team in NBA right now, they definitely need some admistrative and coaching shake up, because they don't no what Hawks atually need to be a contender in NBA, other wise it will continue to be like this. Boston celtic Administration and coaches show us a nice example by collecting great players around the league and adding to their best, ok. but to my suprice they almost lost J, smith again, Hawks is not yet ready for improvement in NBA or Business,

Posted by: The Truth on August 30, 2008 1:43PM EST
Hey Physue S, Kromah

I think your Boston example is questionable. Didn't they lose James Posey to the Hornets? He was a major factor in their championship run. He is a very talented player and they lost him. I'm not going to make execues for our internal problems but if you going to boaster about Boston, please give a better example. In other words, come strong or don't come at all.

Posted by: matt on September 2, 2008 3:10AM EST
GO HAWKS!!!! I think the hawks need a big man or someone like bruce bowen cause frankly our defence could be way better..anyway josh smith is awesome..IDOL!!!

Posted by: Anonymous on September 2, 2008 7:34AM EST
I am a Hawk fan but the question asked in the Atlanta Journal was did the Hawks make enough moves off season to make the playoffs? my ego and pride said yes but my heart said no realistically they did not the team need another big man ZaZa is a gamble reguarless of how much the fans like him and I fell Marvin Williams and Speedy Claxton is also but I am still a Hawk fan and I just wanted to let other fans honestly know how I felt about it. Go Hawks.

Posted by: LC on September 3, 2008 2:02PM EST
The Hawks are going to be good if the coach plays everyone on the team. He shows to much favoritism towards the starters. Acie, Speedy and Flip are pure scorers Evans and Zaza are solid can go off at any moment and the other new guys can balance out the team. Give the starters 30-35 min. a game and mix up the bench players and its a wrap...

Posted by: dottie on September 3, 2008 8:15PM EST
yes yes yes yes yes.......i love it
we need detph

Posted by: Darius on September 8, 2008 5:02PM EST
Hawks need another starter, trade marvin williams. All the good free agents out there and the hawks are getting these developing players. How about somebody who is developed enough to lead.

Posted by: d-wade jr on September 10, 2008 12:38AM EST
im not even a real hawks fan ima laker all day..
but havin flip in the backcourt as well as bibby, jonhson, and law, they're gonna have a more better chance in the playoffs. Eventhough i feel they shoulda beat boston..

Posted by: bibby10 on September 13, 2008 10:07AM EST
this discussion is just a waste of time...the problem is the coach! as long as we have a coach like woody we won't get into the playoffs. he's too narrow to realize that he have more talent and options in the bench compared last season. i bet that he will stick with 6-7 man rotation. look what happened to salim, mario, solo, acie etc last season. all wasted talent. if woody is smart enough to split time efficiently among his players i'm sure we could've a better record last season...i bet in the end most of the players that we've signed won't be even get a chance to play. no play...no exposure...no development. NO PLAYOFFS! u count on it!

we should've signed d'antoni or avery as our coach when we still had a chance. they know how to utilize their player's potential to become more effective.

Posted by: nene on May 25, 2009 10:26AM EST
yah ppl must b crazy! We NEED flip. He has the most steals off the bench in the nba. What yall talkn bout. He is the best off the bench. #22 all the way!!
