Hawks Bring Home Monthly Hardware

From the start, we all said the person who would benefit the most from the acquisition of Mike Bibby would be his backcourt mate, Joe Johnson. That wasn't a difficult assessment to make, as playing with a top flight point guard makes life easier for any scorer of JJ's caliber, especially one fighting as many double-teams as he does.

Tuesday, we got some confirmation about just how successful Joe has been with his new running mate, as Johnson was named Eastern Conference Player of the Month for March after averaging 24.9 ppg and 7.0 assists to help lead the Hawks to the brink of a playoff berth.

JJ took his game to another level in March, leading the team to 8 wins in their last 10 games and putting up his best statistical month of the year in minutes, scoring average, assists, blocks, steals, and FT%.

Of course, that wasn't the only good news for the Hawks.

Al Horford continued to show why he is a serious contender for NBA Rookie of the Year honors, as he won Rookie of the Month honors for the second consecutive month and third time this season overall.

Horford dropped six double-doubles on the competition during the month, leading all Eastern rookies in scoring and rebounding in the process.

The NBA season is incredibly long and grueling, and it's a testament to the talents of both Johnson and Horford that they are both playing their best ball of the season at its most critical juncture.

Congrats to both!

the hawks are the hottest team in the league. Al Horford has made a huge impact and deserves rookie of the year. Joe Johnson is the most underated all star in the league. If the hawks make it to the playoffs he is why.

when you look at it, the top 2 rookie of the year candidates, its horford and durant. all you have to do after that is look at who has a better chance of leading their team to the playoffs and who has the better record. WELL, It's quite simple aftarwards!

Good job Al and Joe. Joe is showing he is a true Super Star in this league. Al should win Rookie of the Year because not only is he putting up outstanding numbers, but he's doing it while playing out of possition. Great job.

Although I'm not as sure as Ben, the Hawks are doing great lately. If they keep the momentum going, they can make some noise in the playoffs and scare some people. Let's do it.

I have the feelin that Hawks was going to the playoff because we got Al and Joe on the same team, but when Bibby came and jion the Squad i knew it was official that hawks will make it.

I'm glad that the team has finally started to have some success. I like the nucleus of this team and hope everyone can be retained. Al Horford has been phenomenal and Joe has been a Godsend to the Atlanta area. The guys in ownership may have their issues, but the team has risen above it all and are making a strong push towards the playoffs. Go Hawks!!!!!

Im a huge Hawks fan from Australia and have been tracking their progress closely. Bibby has helped bring along the rest of the guys and this has proven that we have the material to give the playoffs a push. GO HAWKS, from Downunder. Cant wait to get to a game at Philips Arerna.

Posted by: Gary on April 3, 2008 7:56AM EST
This is great for the Hawks and Atlanta sports in general. We needed something positive around here after the Thrashers and Falcons. But please folks, let's be real, we are not going to beat the Celtics or the Pistons. But keep this group together and add a true center next year and watch out.

Posted by: famous on April 3, 2008 9:40AM EST
Keeping track of the Hawks ffrom the High Seas(U.S NAVY) Make the playoff and the top teams will be scared to face the Hawks in series, we're peaking at the right time. I'd like to see us at 7, but I think we really match the Celts if we are clicking.

As a kid I loved watching Mookie, Dekembe, and steve smith run atlanta basketball. Now a new era has arrived and I wanna say thank you JJ and Al for bringing the A back. There some true hawk fans out there and im one of them. Congrats you guys!!!!!! and good luck in the remaining stretch.

Posted by: zeke on April 3, 2008 11:47AM EST
Al and Joe are a part of a pretty good nucleus of players for the Hawks (including Smith, Bibby, Childress & Marvin). However, it appears that we are going to finish another season under 500. With all of its talent, I think this team has underachieved; hmm Coach Woodson?

I agree, Joe Johnson is my home boy an outstanding player and underrated and Al should be rookie of the year. Making the playoff is a great start for the Hawks but off season we need to really focus on looking for a true Center and move Al to power forward and I would put the Hawks up against any team in the League. Lets go for it Atlanta

Posted by: Steve on April 3, 2008 9:30PM EST
Al and Joe should both be representing the Hawks as Eastern Conference allstars plenty of times in the next decade.

Congrats to our young stud leader/franchise player Joe Johnson and our future franchise bigman and future 20/10 allstar (AND SHOULD BE ROY!) Al Horford!

GO HAWKS

go Al and Joe take the Hawks to the top

Posted by: Maliek Titus ("Magic") Thom on April 10, 2008 1:19PM EST
What I think:They are both very phenomenal players. Al Has contributed so much to this team. He's contributed rebounds,10 extra points, blocks, and even some steals for a center. He is one of the finishing puzzle pieces for this Hawks team and that front court which includes Marvin Williams and Josh Smith.
We all know Joe has contributed points, assists and steals in a very big way.But what you may have not known is that he brings maturity and leadership to this team. He is leading the to their first playoff appearance in 9 seasons.

Posted by: Escarline J. Colon on April 10, 2008 4:56PM EST
Al you have delivered a great season for Atlanta and has also helped them along with the team go playoff bound Let's go Atlanta and Dominican Republic you know the deal!!!!

Very good job Hawks but we have to think about the future with Odom coming back with Portland next season we may have a chance to pick up Alridge hum and the Warriors is having problems with Nelly and Davis it may be a possability to pick up that big center very versatal and physical look forward to seeing the hawks in the playoffs.
