Free Agency Period Opens, Hawks Will Be Busy

NBA free agency opened at 12:01 am ET Tuesday, and two big surprises hit the
league right before it started. Elton Brand and Baron Davis, both
scheduled to make huge amounts of money next year (16.4 million for Brand, 17.8
for Boom Dizzle), each opted out of their deals to become free agents. It's rare
to see players give up so much guaranteed money, and I'll be curious to see how
this plays out for both of them. Brand has stated his goal is to remain with the
Clippers, while Davis' future seems a bit cloudier, especially if the rumor is
true that the Warriors have
offered a max deal to
Wizards G Gilbert Arenas($).
Needless to say, what might have otherwise been a mild offseason for free
agency suddenly promises a lot more intrigue.
How will any of this affect the Hawks? We'll have to wait and see. GM Rick
Sund has said all along his top priority is to bring restricted FA's Josh
Smith and Josh Childress back into the fold, and until something else
happens there's no reason to think that isn't the case. For fans worried about
other teams (the hot rumor is the 76ers) making a run at Smith, it will be
interesting to see how much Brand's availability affects the market for him.
No deals can be made official until July 9, but teams are free to talk to
players as of this morning. We'll follow it all from here, so make sure to check
back with the BasketBlog as everything gets rolling.
What do you think the Hawks should do? Are there other players you'd like to
see the team target aside from the Joshes?
Let us know in the comments.

I believe the hawks should sit. They have no reason to make any sudden changes with the team. If a change is made it will affect not only the team but the whole city. The Joshes should stay for the sake of the Hawks fans.

There is no reason the hawks shouldnt resigns Josh Smith!!!!!!! But instead of paying Childress to come off the bench, we should make a move for Elton Brand. the line would look like this: Mike Bibby-PG Joe Johnson-SG Josh Smith-SF Al Horford-PF Elton Brand-C
we could make a serious run in the playoffs with this lineup, think about it!!!!!!!!!

I dont know why people are saying we shouldnt try to sign somebody to the team. I am all for signing a better shooting and assisting point guard, like B-Dub, instead of Mike Bibby. I do think Josh Smith should be re-signed, but i would let Chillz sign with somebody else where he would be able to start everyday. We could also go after Monta Ellis, Andris Biedrins, James Posey, as long as we replace Zaza, im OK

Sekou Smith just said that philly will be looking at Josh Smith AND Josh Childress tomorrow

Posted by: J-Mill on July 1, 2008 2:46PM EST
Ummm....I don't think we're trading Bibby, so get that out of your mind right now. We're going to have him for a full season with him healthy so we're defiantly going to be better than last year if we re-sign the joshes and add one or two centers.

keep the joshes, dont pick up anybody, and cut off some of the fat (like Speedy Claxton). maybe a deal could be found by getting rid of marvin also

if we can't get elton brand (too expensive) maybe we can try to get someone like Emeka Okafor. If he doesnt work out we can get like a kurt Thomas or something

This would be a real bad move if they let the Joshes go to Philly. C'Mon guys learn from your past. Don't let this drag on!!!!

i would like to keep the joshes, but if childress leaving would help get a qualilty center... hint ELTON BRAND, i wouldnt be mad. we NEED a center ... i dont care for bibby with our team but he's here... get rid of speedy... lets get brand and a quality scorer coming off the bench... and play hard every night n we will be eastern conference finals contenders.

C'mon man we don't have the money to sign Brand! We just need to sign Josh Smith and Josh Childress for sure. Josh Childress is amazing for the price he comes for. Go Hawks!

the hawks need to sign elton brand so the hawks can have more big people

I agree, but Brand only 6'8!Yet's just see what Our new Gm calls, don't panic yet,we need a shooter besides Joe Johnson,Mike bibby!Who else we have,Wealso need a 7'0 with inside presence, beast I call!!!!Go Hawks!Maybe we can get something for Josh or Childress they both caliber players!

|
Posted by: Rahul Parekh on July 1, 2008 7:53PM EST
The main focus right now should be to sign both the joshs.... the hawks need smith(obviously) and teh hawks need a good bench too. without childress the hawks wont have an equally effective bench as this season but I do think getting elton grand will help the Hawks a lot.

Sign both Josh's back. Smith is our best defender and Childress is the only decent ( I personally think he's starter material) bench player we have. Get rid of Zaza please. Unless he actually starts throwing punches, like he almost did against Garnett, he's virtually useless. Either find a big man in free agency, or pray we can get Tyler Hansborough from UNC in the next draft. HE'S A CERTIFIED BEAST!!!
|
|
Posted by: J.D. on July 1, 2008 9:59PM EST
Definitely keep Josh Smith. Although, it's not like Sund isn't trying. Josh no longer wants to play for Woodson. Let the hard working, energetic (yet talent deficient) Childress go. Go after Baron Davis, who fits our style of play perfectly and let Bibby come off the bench. That wouldn't hurt. Or go after Brand and finally get some solid size in the post area. Mont Ellis, another Warriors player, would also fit the Hawks system well. The Hawks and the Warriors are very similar in style of play except that Don Nelson actually knows how to fully utilize AAAAALLLL the talent on his team. Mike Woodson shows an inability to use all of his resources but with a more reliable bench that may change.

Trade Josh Smith & Josh Childress. I would say after that get something good in return for them.
This is what the hawks team should look like next year.
PG - Mike Bibby/Chris Duhon/Acie Law SG - Joe Johnson/Monta Ellis SF - Bonzi Wells/Marvin Williams PF - Al Horford/Zaza Pachulia C - Samuel Dalembert/Kwame Brown

|
Posted by: Sund's New Assistant on July 1, 2008 10:23PM EST
Okay all the people who say that the Hawks have dysfunctional management can go ahead and drop that since we have a new GM. Irrelevant.
If I was Sund, I would put every resource available towards resigning Josh Smith to a big time multi year deal. He can be the spotlight of our team. Joe Johnson is our best player, but he doesn't seem like the kind of guy who needs eternal fame. Smith is still young and wants to be a superstar. The dude was a slam dunk competition winner... he can bring fame to our team.
Childress is the expendable one of the two. Don't resign him, and take a little of the money you would have given him and give it to Smith, the future owner of a bunch of Defensive Player of the Year awards.
PEOPLE! Baron Davis is going to the Clippers. Stop saying we should go after him. Brand is (unfortunately) too expensive.
Sund should have gone after that center from Australia that we own the rights to. Not sure why he didn't. We could do with depth in the front-court.
I know you won't be able to get much, but see what you can get for Marvin Williams. He's a terrible waste of money. Thanks Billy Knight.

hawksfan that lineup i posted sounds good and plus the hawks don't need to come back with the same squad they should change things up. I do not think the hawks will make the playoffs if they returned the same starting 5 they had this past year they need to bring in some new players new flavor.

Why do most of you want to trade Childress??? He's the one player on this team that gives his heart on EVERY SINGLE PLAY!!! He deserves better from you "fans"!! I understand trading marvin. He's has some raw potential, but unfortunately he's way more cold than hot when on the court.

Yes, both Joshes needs to stay, but we can also get rid of some dead wait like Speedy, Hey Hawks fans I dont think anyone in this world loves the Hawks the way I do, but we have to get better look at Raptors they have made a big improvement with there front court with the trade for O'Neal. That team need help with definding Dwight in the playoffs so they go out and get help, we need a pure shooter like a Mike Miller. The Timberwolves are looking to get younger so it will make perfectly good since to trade Marvin Williams for Mike Miller we so desperately better perimeter shooting ,because we got kill last year on a five to six game losing streak because we couldn't defend the three are we couldn't make the three. We can also add a decent big man to help out on defending the paint like Jamaal Maglorie,David Harrison,DeSagana Diop,Fransico Elson,Primoz Brezec,or even a engery guy like Carl landry will help.

Keep Joe,Al and Chill, (most consistent players) *Package Mike Bibby + ZaZa + Josh Smith and get a younger more talented pointgaurd and a wider body (true) center that will play the post!!! (not shoot three's). *Play Marvin and Salim more to provide more offense off the bench. *And please, reward Solomon Jones with more floor time to make up for Josh's defensive stops! (after the Josh trade)

Your New Atlanta Hawks line-up for 2009!!!!
*Get veteran (consistent) point / Acie Law Joe Johnson / Salim Stoudamire Josh Childress / Marvin Williams Big AL / *Get James Posey *Veteran (post) center/ Solomon Jones (beefed-up)
How?: Trade Josh Smith and Mike Bibby (throw-in ZaZa!!!)

I am all for keeping J-smooth, he brings the pain with his athleticism and ability to score. As for J-chill he has been a great sixth man bringing excitement off the bench but he needs to move on. The free agent pool is filled with great talent and the hawks need to have cap-room. They need it if they want to resign Smith, especially if the Philly is talking to him.

This SHOULD be the atl hawks next season
Mike Bibby/ Acie Law Joe Johnson/ Salim Stoudamire Remember hes a free agent this year too Mike Woodson needs to play him more Josh Smith/Josh Childress Big AL/ Solomon Jones Emeka Okafor/ ZaZa
( If cant get center in free agency then trade marvin williams for one)

thats funny im from philadelphia and i hope we get josh Smith he going to be the next Kg your atlanta hawks are stupied yall dont have any money to match the deal we are goin to make because yall used it on a washed up point gaurd mike biby so yall can't get any of the big names free agent like Baron Davis because there is just no money for it you guys are in allot of mess and he dosen't even want to work with your coach we are going to make him very happy here in philadelphia
|
|
Posted by: DG9 on July 2, 2008 1:22AM EST
sign back Smith and do it quickly, if philly gives him a good offer he'll take it. we also need chill back. he's a great 6th man but can also start over the inconsistent marvin if need be. speedy and marvin can be used for a trade for a worthy center like Dalembert. other than that we should sign productive bench players.
|
|
Posted by: Joe on July 2, 2008 1:26AM EST
Salim Stoudemire don't want to play for the hawks anymore he will sign somewhere else cause him and Mike Woodson don't get along.
Get rid of Mike Bibby, Marvin Williams, Soloman Jones, Speedy Claxton.
Then After That they should find some better players cause those guys are just getting a check cause they suck.

Sign both the joshes first of all... and i heard the hawks might be trying to get kwame brown.... i dont know if thats such a good idea... but hey if they do i wont be mad either. And i dont care what you do with marvin and zaza if you can trade them to get someone better than Kwame then do it if not they arent that bad.... But please i dont care what you do with Speedy Claxton just get rid of him he's useless.

Also if we don't get both of our Joshes back i will be one pissed of Hawks fan!! So please dont do anything stupid and sign them both! I dont think we can get anyone better than them! Oh and also try getting Biedrens over Kwame Brown
|
|
Posted by: Carlito on July 2, 2008 2:04AM EST
We get Baron Davis? Ha ha in your dreams! Just get smith and childress, let zaza, marvin, and speedy go and get elton brand... No wait! Lets get Kwame Bron instead, he's the best!(being sarcastic)

Marvin Williams for Ben Gordon... are you f-ing kidding me?! theres no way the bulls would be that stupid... Bulls management will need to be on crack before that ever happens...

|
Posted by: Daniel on July 2, 2008 6:20AM EST
omg... if Rick Sund is dumb enough not to sign the joshes back, ill be so mad... the joshes are like 50% of the hawks heart. if we don't sign them we are gonna have to w8 another decade to get back to the playoffs cause we need the joshes back to win...PERIOD!
|
|
Posted by: Bonce. on July 2, 2008 6:34AM EST
Carlito makes the top call! Surely joe can't be serious about getting kwame brown. One of the funniest things i've heard in ages! I reckon we should keep the josh's. And just run and run and run. Bit of development with our youth this year, trade for a center next and we're contenders! All this talk about baron davis, okafor, brand sounds nice. But can't see it happening! Also, Zaza may not be the most gifted player, but at least he's showing some heart! People keep asking for trades? Were you people not watching when we took this years NBA champs to 7 games with one of the youngest lists? And boston are a team of mercanaries. develop our youth, bring back the heart of the old days!
|
|
Posted by: Bradley on July 2, 2008 6:58AM EST
I think the hawks need to trade or get rid of zaza and marvin they are not dependable. We need another deep shooter to keep bibby and johnson open more. That was are weakness in the playoffs. the joshes need to be resigned even if you don't want to keep them. If you don't want them u could trade them to improve the team also.
|
|
Posted by: G. Rhone on July 2, 2008 7:56AM EST
Match the offers as you've said you'll do. It's imperative that BOTH are signed! Let these guys be your core. You can build with them being your nucleus. I particularly like when the front office said that we must sign our own Free Agents!!! That meant a lot to me.
|
|
Posted by: K Aberle on July 2, 2008 8:04AM EST
I couldn't agree with this comment more! Imagine the run and gun offense we had in the post season with this line up! Childress is great but Smith is an AllStar and possible defensive player of the year. ~ka
There is no reason the hawks shouldnt resigns Josh Smith!!!!!!! But instead of paying Childress to come off the bench, we should make a move for Elton Brand. the line would look like this:
Mike Bibby-PG Joe Johnson-SG Josh Smith-SF Al Horford-PF Elton Brand-C
we could make a serious run in the playoffs with this lineup, think about it!!!!!!!!!

|
Posted by: ATLeverything on July 2, 2008 9:20AM EST
I hate the idea of seeing J Smoov finally perfect his fundamentals w/ Iguadala in Philly, or watching Childress be the stable glue that rejuvinates Detroit. Atlanta has to resign both of them for the sake of buzz around the city that hasn't existed since the 90s.
If the Hawks need to find some money, dump Marvin "The Butt" Williams for an expiring contract. I think he started to play much better towards the end of the season, but he is over paid.
Bottom line, this team is close, and everybodys mother knows that ATL needs a solid center. So here is my biscuit, would the one year solution be Mutumbo? If he can clog the middle for 2/3 of the season, the Hawks can rotate Horford, Zaza, or even Solomon on some nights without losing any of the core from last years playoff team. If everyone else is discussing handcuffing the Hawks with an injury contract $ Brand or $ Okeafor. Those guys want some big deals and both teams are making respectable offers to keep them.
I want to see last years Hawks playoff team over the course of a whole season. Find a cheap center that can rotate, someone like Kwame Brown, and keep what they have. This isn't the long term answer at center, but its better to lock in the core of the team.

Hey Hawk Fans I agree with some of you, but I beleive the most important thing is to sign the joshes back, and please some body tell them to trade speedyand bum marvin williams. That is a must we need a big man anyway so why not get rid of the garbage that we have for a big man.
|
|
Posted by: A. Lebechi on July 2, 2008 10:46AM EST
Now, most of ya'll won't like this, I'm sure!! But it seems most optimal if you ask me.... First off if Philly offers a max contract for J. Smith, do a sign and trade and get a conditional first round pick in one of the next two drafts (much like we did with Phoenix for JJ, lotery protected in 2009, and guranteed in 2010) and Louis Williams and Rodney Carney. Resign J. Chill at all costs, he's a great 6th man, an energy guy and makes us much better.
Oh yeah, let Salim and Bibby skate...
in free agency pick up Shawn Livingston and/or Chris Duhon and Kwame Brown.
lastly trade Marvin Williams to the Chicago Bulls for Tyrus Thomas and next years 2nd rounder
the line up would be sick!!!
PG- Shawn Lingston/Chris Duhon | Acie Law | Louis Williams
SG- Joe Johnson | Josh Childress | Louis Williams
SF- Rodney Carney | Josh Childress
PF- AL Horford | Tyrus Thomas | Zaza Pachulia
C- Kwame Brown | Zaza Pachulia | Solomon Jones
SF would be a little week, but thats what we're getting the extra picks for... plus LeBron is a FA next year, wishful thinking maybe, but you never know.
FYI, my beef with J. Smooth, is that on the offensive end too often he's too wild to be effective and he's a PF more than a SF and has no consistent jumpshot, yet he hangs around the 3 point line like his name is Nowitski or something... he's a liability and for as much as he gives us in energy and a blocked shot he takes away from the effectivness of the over all team...plus Al Horford is an All-Star PF in the making, but only a good C, let him have that spot...
|
|
Posted by: Cabopak on July 2, 2008 10:46AM EST
I think the main priority for the Hawks should be to reinforce the paint. Zaza's performance hasn't been too good and Hawks should search for a better companion for Al Horford. The Joshes should be signed back and the Hawks may think a little more ambiciously and make an effort to sign Okafor, Biedrins or some other player that can offer more guarantee. Maybe Chillz should have more regularity. Discardable players, in my opinion, could be M. Williams, Zaza and Claxton.
|
|
Posted by: A. Lebechi on July 2, 2008 10:47AM EST
or go for Gerald Green and start him at the 3, that would be nice!!
|
|
Posted by: A. Lebechi on July 2, 2008 11:07AM EST
Oh... or better yet follwing the following advice
first!!-- Resign Josh Childress!!
second!!-- Trade Josh Smith, Marvin Williams and Zaza to the Lakers for Andrew Bynum and Sasha Vujacic
third!!-- Sign Shawn Livingston, Emeka Okafor, Kwame Brown and Gerald Green
forth!!-- DOMINATE THE LEAGUE
Look at the line up this time yo!!!
PG- Shawn Livingston | Mike Bibby | Acie Law
SG- Joe Johnson | Josh Childress | Sasha Vujacic
SF- Gerald Green | Josh Childress
PF- Al Horford | Emeka Okafor | Solomon Jones
C- Andrew Bynum | Emeka Okafor | Kwame Brown
you can't stop'em
PS, the reason I say get rid of Josh Smith so much is because Al is a better PF and he doesn't have the skills to be a consistent contributer at SF, he has no jump shot/3 point shot.... thats what we need from a 3.
|
|
Posted by: Dan on July 2, 2008 11:47AM EST
I think we should definitly resign josh smith. He is the best defender at his position and he is a very tough player. We shouldn't about Josh Childress so much, because he has doesn't done much for the Hawks over the past few years. What the hawks really need to do is get rid of ZaZa and sign a very good center, so we have more height and so Horford can play his actual postition. Power Forward.
PG - Mike Bibby
SG - Joe Johnson
SF - Josh Smith
PF - Al Horford
C - A good center like Elton Brand
And off the bench we will have Marvin Williams and Acie Law.

go for elton brand if he signs with the clips, which he probably will because baron davis is heading there, then go for emeka okeafor. if we miss on those two then try and sign kwame for a couple of bucks, there has to be some reason why he was drafted number 1 overall maybe we can turn him into something great. after we get a true center we should go for role players most preferably monta ellis but it looks like golden state is going to lock him up.. but our first priority after resigning the joshes is to get a true center

I am a huge Hawks fan and I think the hawks need to resign both joshes and to sign James posey to Improve there bench because their bench isn't producing right now. So if James Posey doesn't accept the offer to go back to the celtics then the hawks should make a run at him because thats where the hawks need the most help and should try to find a big center to fill the lane

i would like to add some defensive help around the perimeter rondo burned bibby a lot in the playofss i think our starting lineup is fine as long as we keep smith and i would like to keepchildress but only for the right price i think a guy we should take a look at is james jones from the suns but im not sure if hes available also another center would be nice zaza is a scorer but we need some defensive help down low basically i think we need to just be a better defensive team

We need a center so that Horford can play his regular position of forward. I think it would also be good to get another person that can move the ball around and shoot like Jason Williams from the Heat. Of course, I would love to keep everyone that is currently on the team (including Zaza who everyone seems to want to get rid of) but we probably can't keep everyone and still sign the two Joshes so I guess we gotta let someone go. Or can we? All we need is one billion dollars! (*as Dr. Evil puts his pinky up to the corner of his mouth and let's out an evil laugh "Mwaaaaahahahahahahahaha!"*)

First things First resign Josh Smith and Josh Childress is a very good player in fact I would rather have him instead of Marvin Williams but if the hawks have a chance to aquire Andris Biedrins they should give one of this up for that perferrable Marvin Williams.
|
|
Posted by: josh on July 2, 2008 2:26PM EST
heres a thought, what about trying to trade ZaZa and crap for Mark Blount in Miami. The Heat are rebuilding so they may want the younger Pachulia, and Blount gives the Hawks some legit size to defend the extra bigs that Al struggles defending. Al could move over to the 4 with Smith at 3 Joe 2 and Bibby 1. Marvin can come off the bench since he needs to be anyway. Blount's certainly no Brand, but he's as good or better than Zaza, and bigger.

Im a huge hawks fan who has been following the organization for years. Though Joe Johnson is our go to guy. Josh Smith and Childress are the backbone of or team. We cant allow them to go. This is a new year and we have to make progress to be a major contender for the title. We have been waiting to long to be good. Now that we have the chance to be, we have to take the necessary steps to ensure that we can go deeper into the playoffs. Atlanta is home to these guys and the city would be heartbroken to see them leave but I pleed that if we cant keep them. Can we at least make a legitimated stab to replace them with someone who not only the office feels can perform at the level those two individuals were at but an individual or individuals who the city feels that can take this organization on its back and soar like this Hawks program has been waiting to do for so many years.

Just resign the Joshes! Spend the money ASG! If you build it, we will come! Look at the $ you all made in the playoffs against the Celtics! You can't tell me you don't have the money. Woodson runs a tight bench anyhow. Cut the injured and the lame. Get some veteran presence and shooters on the court. Mandate that your players actually work out on basketball skills during the offseason... Marvin Williams... and get the other two brick layers back into Philips Arena. Josh Smith and Josh Childress. I would hate to see these to Cats in another uniform putting big numbers up against the Hawks!

they shuld deffinately re sign both joshes!! smitty is the heart of the team.. and without chillz we have no bench!! we needa start buildin up our bench cause right now we got a pretty sick startin line (just get a beter PG) and it'll only get better the more they play with eachother

Ok Sund, what you need to do is keep the two Joshes!!! Josh Smith next to Joe Johnson is the heart of our team. The fans need to Josh Smith to stay!! We have watched him grow and get better every year. I mean damn, Josh Smith can become one of the best players in the NBA and ATL could have one of the best backcourts Josh Smith and Joe Johnson. They will both become ALL-STARS!! If we don't get Josh Smith I will be upset at the Hawks organization. However, we need to release Speedy. Financially he is like a tumor. Get rid of him then sign a solid center or we can trade Marvin Williams for center later on. Just keep the two Joshes!!

The hawks should resign Josh Smith and Josh Childress but they need to work a deal through Marvin Williams to aquire Biedrins from Golden State this would put the hawks were they need to be as a playoff contender.
|
|

Biedrins makes sense for the hawks a perfect fit trade Marvin Williams and Speedy Claxton only keep ZaZa as a backup Center.
|
|
Posted by: Andrew on July 2, 2008 4:07PM EST
David above me is correct. Signing the Joshes is the top priority right now. Marvin Williams is a bust. We had a chance to get Chris Paul or Deron Williams and we got Marvin instead...look at the other 2 players progression compared to Marvin. Not even close. Atleast sign Childress who is a great 6th man. If the 76ers beat us out for Josh Smith that means that they had to waive Iguodala. Sign iguodala who is just as atheletic as Josh Smith and plays more hard nosed defense and is a better scorer. Then we can go after Elton Brand or Biendrins to help Horford in the paint. Another big man that is legit is Samuel Dalambert. We NEED help in the paint and one more guard as Johnson's backup. Monte Ellis? probably too much money if we get Elton Brand. So our holes in the lineup can be filled if we are aggressive. We need to be aggressive and seek out players we need.

What we really need first of all is to sign both joshes. If we are unable to do that, I think we should make a move for Luol Deng and Ben Gordon. Luol can become a star with a team that is growing. Ben said he wanted a starting position so we could have Ben and Mike play it out for the starting point. Elton Brand could be a possibility but he would have to be a really desperation move with all the penilties and stuff. If Ben Gordon thinks he will be a backup then we should go for Delonte West. If we get both joshes we should take an aim at Biedrins. He has a lot of potential. Mota Ellis and Sebastian Telfair are two players that are young and become better and better. Also look out for Andre Iguadola. If Josh Smith becomes a sixer, the sixers would not be able to hold on to Iguadola. These kinds of players are what the Hawks need. They are very athletic and can run the floor very well. Look for the Hawks to maybe pull the trigger on at least one of these players if Rick Sund knows whats good for him.

How stupid do ya;; think team managment is. Some of the trades, teams may just be giving players away. what we need to do is let Josh Smith go. He has no true position and Big Al is our power forward. Then with the maoney being saved we can resign J-Chill to be the glue guy, and get Okafor to fill the center and move Al Horford over. We'd have one of the most dominant froncourts in the game and would be chamionship conteders. However, we can't get Okafor and still have Josh Smith, there is after all a salary cap in this league.

Let Smith go. he hates Woodson and Woodson hates him. hell i hate both of them. they both suck. Get Iguodala and sign JJ redick or salim back or Delonte West as your shooter. Get kwame brown or randolph morris as help in the paint and hope we can trade marvin for a starting big man.

all these trading ideas are great if we want to go into another building process for a few years, even if we bring in guys like brand or monta ellis and change our line up, how do we know if the guys will gel together with our other players, the good thing about keeping the core is that they have build with each other which is great for a team not just a group of guys that are good that are just put together and u expect them to get the job together, the two joshes have been with this team when we were the laughing stock of the league and now that we made it back to the playoffs they shouldnt be thrown out for others to take their positions while they are still young

EVERYONE saying resign J. Smooth is missing the boat... We all agree that we need a Center do Horford can be a beast at PF...that's clear... but if any of you for one minute thing that J. Smooth can be a consistent contributer at the 3, you have lost your minds... A SF needs to be able to do it all, penetrate and finish (strike one), make smart passes and decisions with the ball (strike two) and consistently hit open jump shots and have three point ranges (strike three, you're out of here Josh)
I mean really guys, when you look at it J. Smith at the 3 would be bad for the team....

Coach Woodson, deserved to be brought back - Good decision Hawks. Billy Knight did a wonderful job overall, but should have moved on, if he could not work positively with all members of the Management Team - Good decision Mr Knight and Hawks. Even though the Hawks were coming off their first successful season in a while, I sure don't remember hearing about an abundance of front line General Managers lining up for interviews - Good decision Hawks and thanks to Mr Sund, for couragiously stepping out and taking a chance with us. Prepare extremely competative offers for both Josh's, letting them know how much they are valued and appreciated in Atlanta, but don't offer money that hurts the team overall. Keep Marvin Williams - he is going to have a breakout year in 2008 ! All great franchises experiencing long term success have four things in common: 1 - Unity and loyalty within the organization (from top, to bottom) 2 - Sound player evaluation and development. 3 - Good athletes, that are unselfish and want to be with the team they are on. 4 - Strong fan base that keeps things in perspective and provides positive support at all times !

i would disagree that josh smith is the heart of the team beacause he doesn't play with passion unless he has an amazing dunk or makes a couple of threes and when the team is down big he plays with absolutley no heart which eliminates any chance of a comeback. every one of the celtics players didnt give up in game 4 against the lakers and they over came a 24 point defeciet. honestly i would rather have josh childress over josh smith

Look people, I haven't seen some of the more outrageous statements i've seen in other blogs in this but the hawks are "almost" a good team but are severely undersized in the front court. If anything the hawks should match any offer that the josh's get and get a potental all star and 6th man of the year aka the josh's.... now here is where the change needs to take place.... either make a move with marvin (sorry but he is the only good dealing chip that the hawks have plus a future bla bla or a bench player) and get an up and down the court athletic big or you can give salomin jones (i think thats how you spell it) a good look next year and not worry about his offense and let him play. This would move every one to a more natural position (although josh smith wouldn't make a great 3) Think about that if anybody that has any pull see's this but this is only coming from a high school first year assistant coach who's only 24 : (

|
Posted by: Justin Smith on July 3, 2008 2:52AM EST
to add to what i said earlier.... the hawks dont have the money aka cap room (IF they resign josh smith and chills) for all the crazy statements being posted that is why nothing in the way of a center is going to come the hawks way until trade time were they use marvin, speedy, and any other none used bench item or draft pick but in the mean time they could get a lame big but best option is to give there most athletic big a chance......SALOMIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are seriously funny, and misinformed people on here. I Love some of the "dream lineups" out there....resigning smith and signing okafor or brand...lol lol lol...did I miss something? Did Donald Trump buy the Hawks? no...those are so funny I actually went back and read some of them again just so I could laugh. Brand--NEVER HAPPEN; Okafor--NOT HAPPENING....put those dreams to bed.
I agree with a lot of people on here about the need to resign Smith...but not for the popular reasons. I love the talent and his age...don't like his carelessness and attitude....but since he's a local guy...if he leaves, attendance will take a hit. Fans in Atlanta certainly aren't the most intelligent (worse sports city by far), so he absolutely must be kept. Chills...hate hate hate to see him go, but I do believe this is where the sign and trade would be better suited...maybe he and Goofy(marvin williams) for a true center and shooter, or simply the most they could possibly get.
Thanks again for the bloggers wishing for Brand, Okafor, KG, Dalembert, etc...I needed a good laugh to get me through the rest of my 12 hour shift at work.

I think Michael Pietrus would make a good bench player for atl. He's a proven player. Maybe the hawks should trade for Dwight Howard? Even Okafor could make a good hawk too, he would make the defense even better, good offensive player as well.

I agree with JOHN. Come on people its nice to dream but be realistic! KG? Dwight Howard? Brand? Give me a break. In order to get rid of Zaza "flopper, missing WIDE OPEN layups, trying to get the foul called" Pachulia, we would have to package him with some other people (cause he's not worth anything). SO send him, J-Chills, and speedy Claxton somewhere and get us a BIG MAN. If we move Horford to his natural position (PF) and actually get a bona fide center, who doesn't even have to score but can block shots and get rebounds, do you know how scary we would be !!!(esp. in the EAST).
On another note, WHY THE HELL did we re-sign Coach Woodson? That dude is garbage. Just because we gave the Celtics a scare in the playoffs? Kinda makes me wish we would have missed the playoffs and had a reason to get rid of his arse....

LOL u guys make me laugh... i agree STOP dreaming and get real....but i agree that the hawks need to get rid of zaza, marvin and speedy ... they could perhaps be used in a trade for a good center like curry( just an example) from the knicks....or perhaps just zaza and speedy for a good center.... that would improve the hawks bench as well becasue marvin would then be a bench player.... and signing both the joshs is smart too..

josh smith will sign and trade to the sixers
did you hear what they did up there?
he hung out with the mayor all day and was basically treated like the king of philly
their style fits too well with him and the atmosphere will make him the star he desperately wants to become
maybe the hawks can pull off snagging igodala, but i doubt it

the hawks DESPERATELY need a quality center and a extra shooter! A quality big man will move Al Horford into a more natural pos. at the 4 slot and a pure shooter will help take pressure and double teams off of joe johnson and open the floor up. But, we have to make some kind of move because even though we played well against Boston, we still ended with a LOSING RECORD!!! plus, teams like Miami and Washington only got better in the draft and free agency. I say a priority should be signing Josh Smith but letting Childress go wouldnt be a problem. It would let marvin blossom into a sixh man instead of lettin him rot at the 4(which he's not) and it frees up cap space to get an available need(DeSagana Diop would have been that defensive big we could have used since we have NO MONEY for Elton Brand but he's gone too.) But available shooters are out there such as a Boobie Gibson, JR Smith and Eddie House. And for all yall out there who agree that mike woodson shoulda got his ass fired and brought in a coach like um...i dont know...Avery Johnson!?!?!? Or at least somebody who knows what a pick and roll is!!! Think about it!!!

All of you that kep saying sighn elton brand, monte ellis, lol KG... yall are a bunch of knucleheads! the owners dont just magically make money to get all this talent! You guys make me sick cause you guys are the ones that want a good DEAM team but yet dont even spent a nickle to actually go and see a hawks game! How do you think the celtics and the lakers and such are able to get these players?! ticket sales are a big part of the way they get that money to get these players! So shut your mouths and actually go to a guy more than once a year and then maybe we could get these high paid players! Think about it!

like i said get rid of j-chill and even salim if we need to cause smith is the heart of the team. JUDAS you cant just get all these people if you dont have the money. And to the a-hole from philly as far as i am concerned smith is a small forward. He played power forward when they needed him the most. Since when do people from philly say yall anyways d-bag. There is no way bibby is going anywhere he didnt step up like they thought he would. SO NO!!! he is a quality point and we can switch him on and off with acie. keep dreaming.

Look...If the Hawks allow Philly to get J.Smooth it will be another big mistake of another Atlanta team GIVING AWAY pure talent. His number are improving, we all see his defensive ability, his three point shots are developing to the clutch level (ask Toronto), why let him go?
Mr. Sund. Put together a package deal... Marvin Williams Acie Law Josh Childress
Seriously we couldn't get much with these "unproductive" guys. But this would free up money to sign J. Smith and to resign Joe Johnson next. Build your team around these two guys and Al Hortford. Please don't give away talent. P.S We could even put Bibby in the package deal and avoid having to resign him next year.
P.S.S But remember... Joe Johnson Josh Smith and Al Hortford will be all-stars in 2009 and they will be the beginning of the Hawks Dynasty of winning in the playoffs. Period. Mr. Sund, please look at the future

I'm a Philly boy too and I've got to be honest, you Atlantians are just plain ridiculous. To the fools talking seriously about getting KG, Shaq, Dwight Howard... I know a store up here on Broad St. that sells common sense for $5 an ounce. No lie. How in the hell would you get KG for example? The man makes over 20 MILLION DOLLARS! US money not Mexican pesos. Shaq makes 20 mil on his own as well. Face facts, the beef between Smith and Woodson isn't a secret. It's almost as well known to anyone interested as the Spanish language. Josh is almost a perfect fit for our teams system and from the tapes I've watched I think he'd fit in well at the hole at the 4 spot we need to fill. Your team definately needs a big guy but (and I'm sorry to break it to you) Brand is either a Clipper still or the newest Warrior (don't you guys watch ESPN). And to answer ta few of the foolish claims I saw, YES the Sixers can resign our precious Iguodala AND sign Josh Smith with about 0.2 (or .1) million to spare. That's just my projected estimate but it's realistic none the less. So I'm sorry ATL but your boy is just about gone and keep dreaming if you think your going to package Marvin "The Butt" Williams (a nickname I saw previously here), Speedy Claxton, and Zaza Pachulia for anything other than a breakfast burrito and some Pepto Bismol to wash it down with. Hell, I'll even throw in a cheese steak.

Did you say that Childress was an unproductive player? Do you not recall all those games when he came of the bench and poored his hard out and scored 10-20 points a game?. Im pretty sure maybe for atleast 5 Childress never scored lower than 10 pts. The kid knows how to get rebounds and he takes atleast 1 steal a game! how the hell do you call that unproductive?

this is what a sixer fan wrote: That front office pulled off one of the best trades last year in getting Bibby. They drafted one of the best picks that was in contention for ROY. Their team went to the playoffs and took the champs to 7 games. If that's a front office in turmoil we better hope they don't get their xhit together. kind of funny to see another fan give praise about our front office

hawks should throw thw kitchen sink at josh smith, he is the heart and sole of this team. and childress is 1 of the best six men in the game. I agree wit j work
|
|
Posted by: A.Lebechi on July 4, 2008 9:09AM EST
we don't need sole, we need the best sf we can get with a shot... you say that Josh Smith is getting clutch with his 3-pointer...ARE YOU FRIGGING SERIOUS????? He shoots more air balls than bricks from out there. the reason I want him gone is every time I think about ti, the picture I get of him in my mind is him running down the court with the ball leading the break with the point guard stand RIGHT THERE, he goes to the rim hard and out of control and blows an opportunity...AGAIN...that has to stop or he HAS to go

First business first sign the josh's and then look for a free agent center(Elton Brand) come to mind. but hawks cannot improve with ZaZa at center bottom line.

LET THE SIXERS GET JOSH SMITH. You dont need him anyway ur fans dont know basketball. Go get a big name player that ur fans could buy jerseys for. And keep childress hes good ahah yeah right

i guess mack j is in charge here
dude you are so much smarter than everyone else
shut up and let people say what they want. people can dream dude, its not like the hawks front office looks at this blog when it is making its decisions
|
|
Posted by: mack J on July 4, 2008 2:50PM EST
they should if they want to want to know what the fans are thinking. If the look at one comment saying trade for KG and Pierce they will laugh their ass off and point and say why do we even bother with these blogs. Its stupid... Thats what blogging is... talking about what could happen not about whats never going to happen. its stupid and annoying... this isnt a dreaming blog.... we want the front office to notice comments by fans.
|
|

I am just saying do some research before you make ridiculous comments like keep both joshes and and sign elton brand or trade away Mike Bibby.

|
Posted by: ps em on July 4, 2008 5:55PM EST
I really think the hawks should keep josh smith because he's young and pretty much the star light of the hawks energy. And to watch him play some where else doin good would kill all hawks fans. so pay bra wat he deserve. Josh childress I really dont care if you sign him back or not either way I wouldnt be mad. But get rid of speedy, marvin, zaza, and go after some players dat can be useful like a good shooter and a good center.

hey mack j...yeah im talkin yo you. you callin me a retard? cuz last time i checked KG is a bonafide superstar and if we had him, we'd be the best team. (teams with the best players are the best teams) and why not try to get a paul pierce?? or someone else like carmelo anthony...or steve nash? im so sick of all the hot heads on here who have no confidence in hawks management. i say trade away the joshes, theyd be a good fit in phoenix. and get steve nash. then trade mike bibby, future first round pick, marvin williams, for kevin garnett
LINEUP: pg-steve nash sg-salim stoudamire sf-joe johnson pf-kevin garnett c-solomin jones
badass lineup right there 3 all stars. easy championship. then i say sign either maggette or james posey. or both. think before you speak mack j, you would be a terrible gm because ur team would suck and mine would be dominate. peace out

Posted by: Anthony on July 4, 2008 11:53PM EST
Elton Brand would be nice. He would finally be someone we could throw the ball into and trust he will make a good decision, but I don't think you guys realize he is only 6'8''. He's extremely undersized.
The only peice I think the Hawks need to add is a back up center to come in the game off the bench. An athletic center that rebounds, block shots, and catches the occasional alley-oop.
Best case scenerio would be re-signing Josh Smith and Josh Childress, while also signing a decent center with somewhat of a post game.

I think here iz what the hawks should do. First thing is that they shoudl sign boht chillz and smith. Second iz that they should trade speedy and zaza for a young rising center.someone who has been playing in the league for about atleast a year but doesnt get a lot of game time and has a lot of talent. i cant tink of any rite now... but anyone know a player like that...

Will someone plz tell this so called nba wiz to shut up. cause i give up on this guy.
Seriously
this getting out of control.
I will some it up for you jake. Why would boston get rid of KG and especially Pierce? They just won boston a championship. Dream on
Why would you put Joe Johnson at the 3 spot? Joe would slap Mike Woodson before he would even consider making him a small forward. Dream on
Why would you replace Joe with Salim? Yes salim has talent. But have you seen how big Salim is??? Honestly there is more to the game then Xs and Os size makes a difference. Dream on
How the hell would we get Nash? Pheonix doesnt want either of the joshes or anyone else on this team... yes we have a lot of talent on the team but we still had a loosing record. The suns want winners. Dream on
On a final note I Have full confidence in the management. But when you say retarded things like pick up KG and Pierce and while you are at Nash... It just makes me laugh at your mental dissorder.
Yes that line up is badass but be realistic. Please sympathize with me. I am tryin to help you understand that is reality not some f'd up lala land where hell is freezing cold.
DREAM ON!!!!!

DA LINEUP.......
CHRIS PAUL JOE JOHNSON JOSH SMITH MICHAEL BEASLEY YAO MING
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WE WILL NEVER LOSE
HAWKS GURU FOR GM!!!!!!
I WOULD BE THE BEST!

One questions
HOW MUCH WOULD WE HAVE TO SPARE FOR THESE CONTRACTS?
Hornets are not just going to give away the best point guard in the league away... And Yao would be sick if he went to ATL. But he would have to worry about his injury situation.

Posted by: melman on July 5, 2008 3:13PM EST
man some of you people are about damn stupid! Everyone keeps saying trade Marvin, but you have to realize the man is young. Last year would've been his first year in the NBA. I agree he is not a starter, but he will do well coming off the bench with J Chill. Why breakup a young talented team which made the playoffs last year that already has the chemistry so why start all over again. Basketball is just like playing spades you have to know how to read you partner. We need to make every effort to sign both of the Josh's. Letting Josh Smith get away is the same as when we let Domonique go to the Clippers. Some of you are just Fair weather fans. I am a true Hawks fans since I was six years old and now I am 26. Some of you a**holes don't know nothing about basketball. The only thing we need is a center he doesn't have to be great. We just need for him to get some rebounds, block shots, and have a decent postgame. In my opinion someone like Mutumbo or Ratliff would be a great fit. Please Hawks management keep our young team together and add a center and in a couple of years we are going to be in the finals. GO HAWKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
|
|
Posted by: Ryan on July 5, 2008 4:24PM EST
I agree with melman. We are gonna be on the finals after a few years. What team would be willing to trade speedy and zaza for a good center? Who would be a good trade for them?
|
|
Posted by: willie on July 5, 2008 4:40PM EST
no team would trade 4 them bcuz theyre useless playerz. marvin iz a good 8th or 9th man at tha best. speedy iz washed up n way over paid (even if he iz gettn tha minimum) n zaza jus suckz
|

Posted by: CP on July 5, 2008 5:52PM EST

I cant believe some idiot said got get kwame brown for the Josh's. What!!!! keep both Josh's we have a good core, Keep Bibby and let him mold and teach Acie Law. We do need a center im thinking bring back Theo Ratliff. We dont really need offense cause everyone's average will go up next season with their growth but we really need defense and Theo is a "defensive beast". Lastly it would put Al in his right position on PF and then we will really see what he can do. By the 09-10 season he will be the Hawks leading scorer folowed by Josh Smith or Joe johnson.

Keep Josh Childress, Solomon, Richardson and Salim and the rookie from Georgia Tech. Of course keep Joe J. and Al H. Trade Zaza, Marvin and sign-trade Josh S.!!!!
With these players I'm sure any G.M. can find another veteran shooting gaurd that can be a threat to light it up when Joe is off the floor, that will not mind coming off the bench. And find a more atheletic center that would love to join a young playoff team that will only get better and compete for many years to come!
line-up:
Al Horford (all-star) 2 be! Joe Johnson (all-star) Josh Childress (from 6th man to 5th man, earned it!) Mike Bibby (*Only 1/2 a season, Joe needs vet's) Atheletic Center (Block shots/rebound and run)
Bench: Acie L./ improving Salim S./ needs more playtime J.Richardson/ needs more playtime Solomon J./ needs more playtime Ga Tech. rookie/ great defense-work w/Joe When they ran the ball during the year and during the playoffs, they could not be beat. Forget offensive post-up play. Just play tighter defense, pass more, run more and drive to the hole more, rather than spot-up shot's...except Joe, he and Salim should keep shooting it!!!!!!

I hope we can keep both Joshs & add some nice free agent pieces. I'd take Posey if it meant not signing Chill. And we need a big man (NOT Kwame Brown) Nevertheless, all this won't matter because we kept that sorry ass coach Woodson for 2 more years. He doesn't have a mind for the game, and he can't manage and develop talent. Example(s): Salim Stoudamire could be a starter or 6th man on any other team, but Woodson can't find a place in the lineup for him. Zaza averaged 11 ppg last season....he never gave consistent production from the bench (avg 4.5 ppg). Solomon has not shown an ounce of progress since we drafted him. Lets face it, if Boston had swept us, our season would have been deemed a failure & we would be in a better position because Woodson would be fired. The fact that we won 3 games in the playoffs should have sealed Woodson's fate. If I were the GM, I'd say, "How can a team with this much talent go 37-45? Why didn't you have these guys playing with that intensity & consistency in the regular season?....you're FIRED." We could have gotten Terry Porter, Avery Johnson, Mike D'Antoni etc.

A) The team wouldnt be playin if we exceed the salary cap... there are certain rules you need to follow.
B) You are getting way to personal you act like a kid with downs when someone blogs about your ethics.
C) Pheonix isn't going to give a away former NBA MVP especially one that is still in his prime.
D)You cant have a 5 man team..... you wouldnt survive. I would like to see you play a whole NBA season without getting injured or being tired.
E) These allstars that you want on the team aren't going to want to leave their team. Go for people that are free agents and have talent.

I'm a philly guy!!! we are going to offer josh smith alot of money and he loves philly more than altlanta...he does not wanna be in a losing franchise at this point of his year when he comes to philly he iguodala and lou williams are going to be the story..So i suggest that you let smith go resign childress and posey and both franchises should be happy!!hawks fan hate on it!!

I really think we should let go of Josh Smith even with his talent! We are all going to miss him but with him we are not going no were....He couldn't play D on k.g so that helped us lose but by release him or letting him go we can have alot of money let go of bibby and johnson and pic up a strong player like dywane wade or james in the future ps. letting josh smith is for the hawks good hahaha

i want the hawks management to resign the joshes(keeping the team's core). also, it would be better if the team can get a decent center(a rebounder, a shot blocker, one who have some post play in him). if the team cannot resign one of the josh then the team can use the salary space for a perimeter shooter(one who can help joe-cool and mike). i hope the best for this team.

who cares about igoudala. 76ers are messed up!!!!! and josh smith iz a restricted free agent so the hawks are obviously going to resign him. So keep dreaming about getting any hawks players. If u guys want u can have speedy and zaza for Dalembert but forget about getting any o fthe joshs

I think we should try and get PG. Crittdendon from Memphis. Then make a play for C. P. O'Bryant, who is sitting on the bench in Golden State. He is the 7' footer that lead Western Kentucky to the Elite 8 a couple years back. If we cant acquire him, then see about the availability of C. Jerome James, who had success under GM Sund in Seattle before going to NY and doing next to nothing. I think these are real possibilty and could truly happen.

JOSH SMITH IS AWSOME... To bad you guys didnt care about him at all this season. These Philly fans are the same as the celtics fans. You guys only got excited because he said he wanted to play for you guys. He wants to be the star of the team. If you guys sign Igi back Smith would want to sign with the hawks. Good luck with his allstar performance next year when he is sharing the spot light with Igi.

A hand full! also I don't even think it will be a question when this time comes around for Marvin Williams.....Bye bye. Keep Bibby no question, It's going to be nice having him for a full year. He better show up this season I know that much. We need a center and then move Al to the 4 spot.

Lmao you call yourself the #1 fan and you cant even spell the guys name right... Its Horford not Hartford, its Solomon not Salamon dummy. ANyway they should keep both of the Joshes because those were the 2 that Improved the most this season. Marvin is not all that bad of a player he just needs to build up more body strength and play some better defense. I say dont trade anyone but speedy to get a center. Now if you have to trade Marvin for a center then do it if not let him come off the bench. Dont really care what you do with Zaza he can stay in my book. All of you sixers fans in this blog get out before i shove a cheese steak up yalls ass!

if you knew anything you would know that the hawks need more scoring. ok the have Joe, and AL, Josh when it fits and a little bibby. if you peoiple look at the real problem, they need a bench. all they need to do is open their eyes to one or two american guards that played in europe and one big american big that played in europe. you don't need to try and add player that cost millions or players that come from the d-league, they get sent back anyway. people, get real.

To bad brand is staying in L.A. now that Baron is going there. That would have been sick though.
Great Line-Up
What about Kurt Thomas, Andris Biedrins, Emeka Okafor. For another post player. Brand is gone.

lol, atlplayer u took the words right out of my mouth, oh these comments are so funny, why would j-smoove go to philly to play for a young, talented team when he is already playing for one, we already had theo ratliff and to bring back mutombo in the atl will not even make sense, by the time we get him, he'll be thinking about retirement and winning a ring not just making the playoffs, and how u can a 5 man team? how if one player gets ejected or fouled out, what do u do? forfeit the game? lol, thats worst than being blownout by 34 pts, kg or pierce will laugh if they saw that someone actually thinks they will leave boston for the hawks, i mean after our altercations with them in the first round with horford vs pierce, joe vs sam cassell, zaza vs kg, marvin and j-smoove vs rondo, i dont see that happening, boston fans will think they are traitors, finally, since its july 7 we'll see what happens in a couple of days, hope the anticipation works out for us, until then be grateful for what u got before its gone, and that goes for both hawks and sixers fans

there's no way we can bring brand into atlanta. we already have a crisis on how are we going to re-sign both joshes and here u are talking about brand joining our team. we don't have enough cap space. unless we go for a sign and trade but we don't have much players to offer to catch the interest of other teams unless we include some of our core players and that will be a stupid decision. our top priority is to resign both joshes then focus more on how we're going to strenghen our bench. there are lots of players our there who can be a solid bench player who's not asking for much money. all we need to do is to make the right decision and give them enough playing time in order for them to improve and increase their confidence.

i think the best possible big man that we can land is okafor...he's got all we need for a center. a defensive and rebounding big man who can also score and run. he's not much of post player but rather a banger. i believe that he fits well with our system. we don't really need him to score points for us coz we already have a post player in horford. i've always thought that we bring brand or o'neal in our team but there's no way in hell that it will happen. we should just stick with okafor and hope that we can sign him. we should also get rid of claxton that scab is earning 6M per season. we need to use his contract to get a better bench players.
if only we could trade a coach...he sucks.

I think that singing our Joshes should be the top proprity for the club right now. They were a vital part of our success this year and if we're able to keep them and bring in at least two or three more players then look for my Hawks to replace Boston as the eastern conference representatives in the Finals next year. It's obvious that Smith has the ability to dominate defensively, I mean look at what he's done throughout the season and to Garnett in the playoffs. His offensense is going to come so letting him go will be terrible for the Hawks since they let Stacey Augmon get away. Childress is more offensive minded and that energy that he brings to our team is enough to lift our spirits even if we're down 20.He's nonstop effort on the court and we need that sparkplug if we're going to make our stronger playoff run next year.If we're able to get at least two more big men (Brand and someone) and another swingman then the glory days of the Hawks will return sooner than we think. Let's take care of business at home first and then we'll go bring in the other family members we need real soon!

EVERYONE SAYING GET OKAFOR AND BRAND. THATS NONSENSE. WE HAVE THE TEAM TO MAKE IT IN THE PLAYOFFS. WE TOKE BOSTON TO GAME SEVEN. WE NEED TO RESIGN THE TEAM WE HAVE. WITH SPEEDY MAKING THE MONEY HE IS TO JUST RIDE THE BENCH I WOULD GET RID OF HIM. WHAT WE NEED TO DO IS KEEP THE JOSH'S AND TRY TO SIGN K BROWN TO PLAY CENTER. YEA HES A BUST BUT WHEN HE STARTED WITH THE LAKERS A FEW GAMES THIS SEASON HE AVG ABOUT6 REBOUNDS A GAME WHEN STARTING. TRADING ZAZA WOULD BE STUPID. WHAT THE HAWKS NEED IS A PLAYER WHO WANTS TO PLAY FOR THIS TEAM AND HE DOES. HE ABOUT THREW DOWN WITH KG. I DIDNT SEE BRAND, OKAFOR OR ANY OTHER BIG MAN STAND FOR HIS TEAM THIS YEAR LIKE HE DID. MY LINE UP...........
MIKE BIBBY/SALIEM STAUDIMIRE...... JOE JOHNSON/JOSH CHILDRESS......... JOSH SMITH/JOSH CHILDRESS....... AL HORFORD/ SOLOMAN JONES...... KWAME BROWN/ZAZA....

I read a lot of comments on Marvin Williams and to be honest about it Marvin just haven't been able to get it done. Personnally I have nothing against him but he is not the player the hawks need resigning Josh Smith and Josh Childress is a most but after that the organization need to look at Marvin,Speedy and ZaZa and ask themselves will these guys get it done for us this year and then think about all the times this past year after a game the look Joe and Josh had on their face when the two of them gave it their all. I truly believe Management will do the right thing. Good luck this year Hawks and may God Bless

AGAIN!!SIGN J-SMITH AND CHILDRESS... SOME OF YOU FORGOT HOW SMITH MADE RONDO'S LIFE A LIVING HELL DURING THE PLAYOFFS..RONDO COULDNT FINISH A LAYUP W/O SMITH IN HIS FACE..AND LOOK AT HOW THE LAKERS FARE WITH NO DEFENDER OF SMITHS CALIBER??????RONDO JUST BURNED EM' EASILY AND KEPT MAKING PLAYS IN THE PAINT....THE CELTS COULDNT DO IT TO EITHER THE PISTONS OR CLEVLAND BECAUSE THEY HAD PRINCE AND LEBRON CHASING THEM DOWN... THATS WHY WE NEED SMITH AND CHILLDRESS BADLY....PERSONALLY, I THINK SMITH IS THE BEST THING THATS HAPPEND TO THE HAWKS SINCE D-WILK AND SPUD WEBB....I'M NOT SAYING HE IS AT THEIR LEVEL,,SOON HE WILL, BUT HE BRINGS THE SAME INTENSITY THEY DID..NOW WE HAVE LAW AN HORFORD W/ CHILDRESS AND JJ...WE SHOULD BUILT AROUND DAT....JST BRING IN A LEGIT CENTER (LIKE ALDRIDGE OR BIEDRINS) AND ADD MORE DEPTH TO THE BENCH...EVEN IF IT MEANS TRADING AWAY MARVIN AND SPEEDY..I AGREE WITH "anonymous"..I BELIEVE MANAGEMENT WILL DO THE RIGHT THING..

yeahhh go atlanta dream!!! i knew they would win on saturday, now i have a dream that one day the atlanta ownership team can reconcile and join together in one, and that the hawks will go for a winning season this year for the first time in a decade, and appear on national tv throughout the regular season, and have a bigger fan base letting others see how underrated our players are, i think not having a rookie this time around is the best thing for us, because it lets us not waste time on teaching a player the nba level game but more time on improving everyone else which is why in years past we have seem inconsistent at times, also with this playoff experience, the guys no what they are up against and they will feel hungrier in the season to win more games so we can get home court advantage in the playoffs, which to me helped the celtics win the championship this year, go hawks!

I agree with most of you that say we should package marvin, speedy, and zaza for a decent BIG (7'O) man. I also agree that we need to move Horford to his natural position as PF. I DON'T AGREE that we should let J. Smith go, though. He's our best defender!! WE should start Solo in Marvin's place. That's my idea, but I leave it to our GM Mr. Sund to make the right calls.

We don't have enough money to sign Elton Brand and Josh Smith. Don't kid yourself. Even if we don't sign Childress. Maybe we could swap signing Smith for Brand, but that's it. Try to keep Smith and use common sense to realize that we could only get a mid-level center.
Some of you people are saying that we should go sign this guy and that guy... one person's line-up even had us getting Okafor, OJ Mayo, Conley, Ellis, Diop, Brook Lopez, Brandan Rush, and Chris D Roberts (whoever that is) in THE SAME OFF-SEASON?! SERIOUSLY even the Lakers, Celtics, etc. couldn't pull that off. And the only big assets we could give up are JJ and Horford, which we wouldn't do.
IDK if Solomon Jones is as good as some of you are hoping he would be...
The only off-season moves I think we should make: 1. Try like heck to get rid of Marvin. He isn't getting any better... 2. Get Speedy to retire. Think up some severance package or something. He is sucking away all our money. He ain't getting no better (injury-wise) neither... Thanks Billy for your lasting legacy. 3. Sign Josh Smith (definately) and Josh Childress (maybe). Childress is expendable if it means you can throw some extra cash to Smith. 4. Bring in our prospect from Australia. Add depth to the center position.

i think that j.r smith has to big of ego for the hawks and if we want to make it to the playoffs just move josh childress to small foward when we sign him back and get elton brand thats wat we need a good center that way al horford doesnt have to play out of position and marvin williams could also play small foward again

I believe all the hating sorry a** sixers fans need to keep off this HAWKS blog and find something better to do with their time. Anyway, everyone should stay and I understand that speedy seems worthless but i have to admit that after watching him a few years ago he is an ok player if he can just get well. Please dont seperate our hawks. if you do it will be the worst thing ever.

And if josh accepts what the sixers throw at him then it will show his true selfish colors. Him and mike woodson need to suck it up because this is bigger than both of them. I would love for josh smith to stay but if he prefers to leave where he basically is the spotlight to where he is second best then so be it. Although i would hate watching the hawks play against him.

First of all i think these non hawks fans need to get out of this blog. Im talking to these sixers fans. Dont get glad cause your team had its first good season. It wont last. Anyway, I believe our team should stay together. Josh smith is very important to the ATL fans. I he leaves he would seem selfish and it would show his true intentions. Also, here he has the spotlight on him already. There he would be second best if, as the sixers say, their precious Iguodala is not being signed elsewhere. The front office will be smart and try to match offers but if josh doesnt accept any then let him go and about three seasons later he will wish he didnt make the deal anyway.

Unfortunately, hawkfan is right. Speedy reported to the summer camp. Everyone must agree that that has been a complete disaster. Even if he was at full speed, he wouldn't be worth what we're paying him.
Elton Brand is more likely to sign with the 76ers than Josh Smith is. Brand is (unfortunately) a little better than Smith and would be more enticing.
Didn't know that Anderson from Australia had committed elsewhere. It seems odd that he can declare he will play somewhere else when we own his signing rights.
I would love it if we could get Monta Ellis.

Brand to 76ers. Wait... check 2 posts up. That's exactly what I said three hours ago. Brilliant.

Posted by: mack J on July 6, 2008 1:00AM EST A) The team wouldnt be playin if we exceed the salary cap... there are certain rules you need to follow.
Posted by: chris on July 6, 2008 3:42AM EST I'm a philly guy!!! we are going to offer josh smith alot of money and he loves philly more than altlanta...he does not wanna be in a losing franchise at this point of his year when he comes to philly he iguodala and lou williams are going to be the story..So i suggest that you let smith go resign childress and posey and both franchises should be happy!!hawks fan hate on it!!

Posted by: Anonymous on July 6, 2008 12:43PM EST who cares about igoudala. 76ers are messed up!!!!! and josh smith iz a restricted free agent so the hawks are obviously going to resign him. Posted by: AntCam on July 6, 2008 3:22PM EST I think we should try and get PG. I think these are real possibilty and could truly happen.

if you knew anything you would know that the hawks need more scoring. ok the have Joe, and AL, Josh when it fits and a little bibby. if you peoiple look at the real problem, they need a bench. all they need to do is open their eyes to one or two american guards that played in europe and one big american big that played in europe. you don't need to try and add player that cost millions or players that come from the d-league, they get sent back anyway. people, get real.
Posted by: Mack J on July 6, 2008 10:56PM EST To bad brand is staying in L.A. now that Baron is going there. That would have been sick though.
Great Line-Up
What about Kurt Thomas, Andris Biedrins, Emeka Okafor. For another post player. Brand is gone.
Posted by: hawk fan on July 7, 2008 12:09AM EST lol, atlplayer u took the words right out of my mouth, oh these comments are so funny, why would j-smoove go to philly to play for a young, talented team when he is already playing for one, we already had theo ratliff and to bring back mutombo in the atl will not even make sense, by the time we get him, he'll be thinking about retirement and winning a ring not just making the playoffs, and how u can a 5 man team? how if one player gets ejected or fouled out, what do u do? forfeit the game? lol, thats worst than being blownout by 34 pts, kg or pierce will laugh if they saw that someone actually thinks they will leave boston for the hawks, i mean after our altercations with them in the first round with horford vs pierce, joe vs sam cassell, zaza vs kg, marvin and j-smoove vs rondo, i dont see that happening, boston fans will think they are traitors, finally, since its july 7 we'll see what happens in a couple of days, hope the anticipation works out for us, until then be grateful for what u got before its gone, and that goes for both hawks and sixers fans
Posted by: go_hawks on July 7, 2008 1:22AM EST there's no way we can bring brand into atlanta. we already have a crisis on how are we going to re-sign both joshes and here u are talking about brand joining our team. we don't have enough cap space. unless we go for a sign and trade but we don't have much players to offer to catch the interest of other teams unless we include some of our core players and that will be a stupid decision. our top priority is to resign both joshes then focus more on how we're going to strenghen our bench. there are lots of players our there who can be a solid bench player who's not asking for much money. all we need to do is to make the right decision and give them enough playing time in order for them to improve and increase their confidence.
Posted by: hawks fan7 on July 7, 2008 1:42AM EST i think the best possible big man that we can land is okafor...he's got all we need for a center. a defensive and rebounding big man who can also score and run. he's not much of post player but rather a banger. i believe that he fits well with our system. we don't really need him to score points for us coz we already have a post player in horford. i've always thought that we bring brand or o'neal in our team but there's no way in hell that it will happen. we should just stick with okafor and hope that we can sign him. we should also get rid of claxton that scab is earning 6M per season. we need to use his contract to get a better bench players.
if only we could trade a coach...he sucks.
Posted by: Anonymous on July 7, 2008 11:37AM EST we need to sign josh smith back and josh childress.then release speedy trade zaza for cash.then sign jr smith or monte ellis. sign andris beindris and channing fry
heres your team
C BEINDRIS/SOLO PF HORFORD/CHANNING FRY/MARVIN SF JOSH SMITH/MARVIN/JEREMY RICHARDSON SG JOE JOHNSON/JR SMITH OR MONTE ELLIS PG MIKE BIBBY/ACI LAW/SILIM STORDIMIER
HOW ABOUT THAT
Posted by: Damario Leathers on July 7, 2008 1:53PM EST I think that singing our Joshes should be the top proprity for the club right now.
Posted by: TYLER on July 7, 2008 2:09PM EST EVERYONE SAYING GET OKAFOR AND BRAND.
Posted by: Anonymous on July 7, 2008 2:36PM EST I read a lot of comments on Marvin Williams and to be honest about it Marvin just haven't been able to get it done.
Posted by: someone on July 7, 2008 4:05PM EST AGAIN!!SIGN J-SMITH AND CHILDRESS...

First of all ive been saying this time and time again... Sign both of our Joshes now!!! Secondly... I could be wrong... but i saw PTI ( Pardon The Interruption) and i think i saw them talk about Michael Pietrus going to the Orlando Magic and the magic is letting J.J Reddick go? If it is then I think we found our shooter. Yea he sucks in size and defense but he is a a great shooter, he can make 3's and pretty much never misses a free throw! I say he would be perfect and not costly since he has been complaining about not getting no play time in Orlando which i don't blame him... So there is o reason why he should complain about the money we give him as long as he gets playing time and proves himself. Correct me if im wrong please.

marvin needs to stay he carried the hawks in a few games he is or was the youngest player on the team 3rd leading score midrange is money a pure 3 he will be fine if he gets stronger. both joshes is a yes . childress should have been 6th man of the yr. speedy is a waste cut him now and free up space and get a running center like BEINDRIS or see what jones can do play the kid he did good every time i see him play. funny thing jones got more run in the playoffs then the whole season. i like woodson more(this year) he runs good out of bounds plays and set play off timeouts. but we cant run like gsw or phx we dont have a pure shooter...oh we do but the coach dont like him. small teams run and dont grind it out woody you saw what happen game 7 boston run damnit run

STephon Marbury? hell no! HE would bring to many problems to our team and he clearly wont play for you if he doesnt do it his way! I would far better agree with keeping Bibby over Marbury!

all i want to know is why anyone would want to get rid of guys like marvin and the josh's...i realize that marvin isnt a super star and the josh's arnt great scorers...but williams could make for a good back up off the bench and both childress and smith are top notch defenders...and besides who doesnt like seein smiths high flying dunks

I see sign both of our Joshes, and get Kwame brown as a center since we dont have much to spend, and get JJ reddick as our shooter.
