Draft Preview: Spencer Hawes
Posted by: Micah Hart on June 6, 2007 at 10:59AM EST

As we start getting closer and closer to the June 28th NBA Draft, I thought it would be a good idea to start taking a closer look at some of the players who might be plying their trade in Atlanta next season.

Though I am a huge college basketball fan, I didn't really see most of the guys projected to be available to us enough times to comment on them at length.

Fortunately, one of the beautiful things about this here Internet is there are many blogs out there that follow these guys all year long and can give insight into what kinds of players they are and what they are capable of becoming.

Today we continue our series with Washington big man Spencer Hawes, who is projected as a possibility for the Hawks with the #11 pick.

Our guest expert today is Zach Landres-Schnur, who authors UDubDish, a blog that covers the University of Washington sports scene, and is a contributor to the sports blog The Big Picture. Here are his words on the Huskies' big man:

Spencer Hawes:
Draft Express profile

How they got here: Hawes had a decent freshman year, leading UW in scoring and changing the dynamic of the game when he was on the court. He showed his best stuff on the big stage, scoring 12 points and grabbing 12 boards in a loss at Pitt. Going up against fellow 7-footer Aaron Gray, he held the Panthers' big man to just five points.

Strengths: He's a seven-footer, soft touch, 7-footer, good turn-around jumper, 7-footer

Weaknesses: Lack of experience, not assertive enough, not a shot-blocker

Why Hawks fans should want him: Did I mention he's 7-feet?

What might give Hawks fans pause:
He was supposed to be the guy to come to Seattle and help the Huskies make a deep NCAA Tourney run. Washington didn't even make the NIT. He's shown his potential at times, but right now, that's pretty much all he has: potential.

What current player he reminds you of: Does Shawn Bradley still play?

Spencer Hawes reminds me of Yao Ming, based off of the info above. A soft touch, 7 footer and a turn around jumper; that seems to describe Yao. SHAWN BRADLEY DOES NOT PLAY BASKETBALL ANYMORE.

hawes has the best back to the basket game ive seen in a while

I think it would be best if this Spencer Hawes post was completely removed. I don't want Billy Knight to be influenced at all into making this decision. Anybody remember Cal Bowdler?

HE REMINDS ME A A FORMER HAWK.... JOHN EDWARDS!!!!

Posted by: damon on June 7, 2007 3:33PM EST
Heck no!! He wasnt even the best big man on his team. Jonathan Brockman is way better than him, more post moves, more energy. Hawks, please don't make this mistake. What can he do better than Za Za? I'll answer......nothing!.........draft Corey Brewer and package one of the swing men and # 11 and get a point guard or get Conley, do something, just don't get Hawes!

I am not to sure that Spencer would be the way to go at eleven. What if Brewer or Green was available. Has anybody thought about trading up in the draft. What about getting Brendan Wright with the first pick and then getting Acie Law or Mike Conley with the eleventh pick and trying to trade up for Durant. If thats not enough put the next two draft picks of the hawks in it two. If thats not enough throw Childress in. If thats not enough trade the whole francise for him. Joe Johnson, Kevein Durant, and J-Smooth would be awesome.

Damon the way you feel about Hawes is the way i feel about Wright. Truth be told he would be a good pick at 11. Has size and is a skilled player

It would be a good pick in the second round. The Hawks have a fundamental problem that continues to haunt them every year - They have no star to get fans excited about. They do not have the luxury to ask us fans to sit and wait for three more years while they try and build something (still not sure what that is exactly). Spencer if available would be a good pick but then how is he any better than center already in place.

If the Hawks management were smart they would make the deal with Portland and send there #3 pick to them for Jarret Jack and LaMarcus Aldridge. Then you still have your #11 pick to get Jeff Green Acie Law or Joakim Noah. Throw in Sheldon Williams to sweeten the pot because he is garbage, The Hawks should have known better thant to draft a player from Duke to the NBA. This scenario would immediately make the Hawks a number 4-5 seed in the east, get them younger and more athletic, and get 1 or two legitimate big point guards that can run the show with all of the swing players that they have. Wise up Billy knight and act like you have a clue. Mike Connley is good, but he is small and in the NBA that means vulnerable to Injury and Defense. Does TJ Ford ring a bell, or how about Speedy Claxton, (you have first hand knowledge of that). Make it happen now before it is too late!!!!!!!!!!!!

No Stars to get excited about? Are you serious Steve?
Josh Smith is one of the most exciting players in the league! Listen to people and commentators outside of the ATL.
JJ is an ALLSTAR! What team are you not watching?

All you people (Tim) who think Hawks Management doesn't have a clue, should look back at what we had before Knight came in and blew up every thing. Does Alan Henderson and his big contract ring a bell? Does lack of cap space and no star wanting to come to Atlanta peak your short term memory?
BK is the same guy who got Gasol from the previous
Hawks mgmt. He turned Al Harrington into the 11th pick. He turned Rasheed playing one game to Josh Smith.

The only reason you have an Allstar in town is because of mgmt. The only reason you are posting about 2 top 11 draft picks is because of management. Leave the Negativity in therapy! The Atlanta Hawks deserves some real fans.

spencer hawes is a joke
the only thing that stands out is his height, which he doesnt take advantage of.
he wasnt even the leading rebounder on the team he was like 2nd or 3rd.
hawes also has less shot blocks than josh mcroberts(not a seven footer)
taking hawes with any pick would be a bust for the hawks.

Here I am, I eat and breath basketball , I must be getting the wrong information , I read different draft boards how Hawes was the "2nd " best center , a little soft but Real sweet offensive moves.. I was thinking we take Brandon Wright ,, a Chris Bosh clone ... at Power forward , at 3 and take Hawes at 11 and then we have a two headed monster at center... then I read that on the Internet that Atlanta is willing to move Marvin Williams ... So do it For the Georgia Tech Point guard Criterieon in the first round... Is that just crazy? heh What do you say??

Posted by: Ricky Dunn on June 17, 2007 6:53PM EST
I hear what the "experts" are saying about Spencer Hawes but all I can remember is his dad (Steve) standing at the head of the circle and shooting jump shots for the Hawks.

Posted by: wuffe on June 17, 2007 7:33PM EST
Well then shoot we needed a center ... someone talk to Hibbert ... ask him what was the durn deal? He would have been the 3rd overall pick ... He would have learned on the job? ... durn... Him with either Acie law or the Georgia Tech point guard Criterion and I wouldn't even look back.. Ahh well twas his decision.

this is not a bad pick at 11

a developed post game from a big man with good passing skills

Posted by: idecris on June 23, 2007 12:49PM EST
this 7 footer plays like a big man.

he is fundamentally sound.

he has good post skills, has an array of moves and counter moves (spin, turn around, jump hooks, fade aways, up and under, etc.) a nice post up base that if polished even more could give a team a real low post threat.

has a nice soft touch and release, long jumper is good.

he passes very well and can handle the ball (has shown an ability to dribble coast to coast, although that is not a necessity for a big man)

well, you can't expect them to be finished products coming out of college (especially underclassmen and highschoolers)

his body is still filling out, he's just 19. will still gain muscle and strength in the years to come. which means the best is yet to come.

defensive game could still be polished more. but he is already a shot blocking presence and has legit length.

his high BBall IQ and his stand of not backing down makes the most of him as a post defender.

NOT BAD for an 11th pick. could become a Brad Miller/ Bogut/ Kaman like player.

i don't know why the Hawks are not considering him.

The bruteness of Shelden complements Hawes finesse.

Hawes would make a good teamate to Atlanta's wing guys since he has the ability to get the ball to teammates when he attracts defensive attention at the post.

Hawk Fans,

I believe the BK will select Yi Jianlian @ the #3 pick in the 2007 NBA Draft.

By the way, I am glad BK is not listening to folks like 3D Dennis Scott or the simple minds @ 680 The Fan or 790 the Zone.

I mean, I made a call to 790 The Zone Friday and spoke with Home Brandon Lee and 3D Dennis Scott. I pleaded my case for Yi Jianlian @ the #3. Dennis Scott said he hasn't seen any video Yi Jianlian and yet he saying "Don't Pick Yi Jianlian"

Dennis Scott wants to be a General Manger someday... Start by doing your research on a player (playa) and not just bumping your gums with bad info or opinions ... 10 - 4, Sir!!! No disrespect, just truth...!!!

This guys are making statements against Yi Jianlian and they have never seen the video on this guy. I mean, the Radio Media in Atlanta is awesome but these guys are so wrong on this subject matter.

Yi Jianlian is a **STAR** and the HAWKS Fans are about to taking to another level "Global Thinking"...

Later...,
Dou... Crenshaw, Sr.

did anybody stop to think that if the hawks drafted at #3 mike conley jr and traded him and another hawks player to portland for zach randolph and jarrett jack they would have the deepest team in the league and two allstars on the same team. That would give them a veteran point guard and a low post scorer that would demand a double team and with #11 pick choose a 7-footer that you could bring along. PLEASE BILLY KNIGHT READ THIS AND ALL HAWKS MANGEMENT TAKE NOTE. DO NOT LET THIS SLIP THRU YOUR FINGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rikky, you are remembering Hawes' Uncle Steve. His did played in Europe. Spencer is very different from them. Much bigger, back to the basket post-player, good use of either hand, likes to run, excellent passer. But needs muscle and work on D. Would be OK at #11 but it will take 2-3 years to get there. Very, Very young.

This makes me remember Steve Hawes. He was with the Hawks in the 70s or maybe early 80s. Remember that dude?
