Draft Preview: Javaris Crittenton
Posted by: Micah Hart on June 21, 2007 at 3:55PM EST
As we start getting closer and closer to the June 28th NBA Draft, I thought it would be a good idea to start taking a closer look at some of the players who might be plying their trade in Atlanta next season.

Though I am a huge college basketball fan, I didn't really see most of the guys projected to be available to us enough times to comment on them at length.

Fortunately, one of the beautiful things about this here Internet is there are many blogs out there that follow these guys all year long and can give insight into what kinds of players they are and what they are capable of becoming.

Today we look at a guy who could be an option for the Hawks at #11; Georgia Tech freshman PG Javaris Crittenton.

Our guest expert today is Matt Winkeljohn, who covers the Georgia Tech beat for the AJC. Here are his words on Atlanta's home-grown point man:

Javaris Crittenton:
Draft Express profile

How they got here:
McDonalds high school All-American in 2006 at Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy, co-led Georgia Tech in scoring (14.4 ppg with 5.9 assists) in '06-'07. ACC All-Rookie team and third-team All-ACC.

Strengths:
Size (6-foot-5, 198 pounds) and rebounding ability for a point guard, fearlessness, will and ability to drive and elevate in traffic, competitive nature. Good, not great, speed. Better than average free throw shooter.

Weaknesses:
Lets emotions get the best of him sometimes, and will occasionally zone out and try to do too much by himself. May over-dribble.

Why Hawks fans should want him:
Ultra competitor who very badly wants success. Works hard, and is very coachable in practice. Good hands on defense, where he was among ACC steals leaders, and not afraid to take a money shot. Wears colors on sleeve; he's in it to win, not just cash a check.

What might give Hawks fans pause:
Point guards need to keep themselves under control, and Crittenton was known at Tech to occasionally deviate from the plan when under emotional duress. Needs to be better at letting go of what happens, and at assessing and implementing in-game adjustments. He's 19.

What current player he reminds you of:
Chauncey Billups minus a few pounds, and not yet that kind of shooting threat although he may be one day.

The Hawks need to draft Horford with the 3 pick and Javaris Crittenton with the 11 pick. Then sign Mo Williams to start at the PG position and let Crittenton learn while he plays without the pressure. They could also package up the 3 pick and one of the Williams boys to Boston for the 5 pick and al Jefferson.

More upside than Law... If we go for the "safe" pick at three in horford, we better gamble at 11 with Crit. Two cowardly picks would upset me. If we go with Yi (which I'm starting to doubt will ever happen), I'd have no problem with Law at eleven.

Posted by: horford on June 21, 2007 9:50PM EST
BIA!!!!!!!!! banditt is right. HORFORD at #3 then CRTITTENTON at #11.

Posted by: diehardhawkfan on June 21, 2007 11:50PM EST
Yeah, 3.9 turnovers per game...2nd in the ACC...he'll fit right in with the Hawks.

Posted by: medayoallday on June 22, 2007 1:28AM EST
This guy has the best upside of any of the point guards in this years draft. Worth a look.

Posted by: Randy on June 22, 2007 2:09AM EST
No, Law is better and more ready than Crittenton. Horford #3 and Law #11 unless Law is off the board then Crittenton. I am still a little weary about letting Conley slip by at #3, this guy could really come back to bite us like Chris Paul! You never know Conely could become a superstar or just another Speedy Claxton.

Posted by: medayoallday on June 22, 2007 3:41AM EST
I agree that law is the most NBA ready. But Crittenton has the most upside and potential.

Posted by: stop betting on potential on June 22, 2007 9:22AM EST
Potential - the most overused word in sports today. minnesota is stuggling with what to do next because they have continued to draft potential to fit with garnett. lakers dropped shaq because they felt they could draft potential to go with kobe. the hawks are young enough and need players that can come in and play now. if that means trading for some veteran leadership or signing a free agent (vince carter) then fine take conley, law, crittenton and horford. the hawks need to worry less about who they draft and get a player that can close out games and that you can count on late in games to get you through.

Posted by: diehardhawkfan on June 22, 2007 9:48AM EST
Law is the most "NBA ready"...funny we drafted someone like that last year (Shelden Williams)...we all know how that turned out.

Posted by: Charles on June 22, 2007 12:24PM EST
I'd rather take the "nba ready" point guard than power forward. Point guard is a tough transition and Law will be ready to play quicker. If we go with Law, I think we should gamble a little on the third pick...

Posted by: lizard on June 22, 2007 12:25PM EST
the best point guard in this years draft is mike conley! conley @ 3 and best big man @ 11 --- we need a point guard, get conley while you can cuz he won't be available at 11. If you want to settle for law or critt, then take horford @ 3 and either available pg @ 11. CONLEY is the real deal !!!

Posted by: Mjoyner on June 23, 2007 1:02PM EST
Yea Al Horford is the best pick at #3 even though i like Law the reminds me of Salim Stoudamire so we should pick Javaris Crittenton at #11

Posted by: Randy on June 23, 2007 6:14PM EST
Rumor has it, Hawks may pick Acie Law at #3!?!?! This is coming from the same source that leaked the Sheldon Williams rumor last year, which of course the Hawks against all logic got. Billy Knight must be back on the crackpipe again. Listen BK, Law is expected to still be on the board at 11!!!

Posted by: Douglas Crenshaw, Sr. on June 23, 2007 7:54PM EST
Hawk Fans,

I believe the BK will select Yi Jianlian @ the #3 pick in the 2007 NBA Draft. Let's draft Javaris Crittenton @ #11.

By the way, I am glad BK is not listening to folks like 3D Dennis Scott or the simple minds @ 680 The Fan or 790 the Zone.

I mean, I made a call to 790 The Zone Friday and spoke with Home Brandon Lee and 3D Dennis Scott. I pleaded my case for Yi Jianlian @ the #3. Dennis Scott said he hasn't seen any video Yi Jianlian and yet he saying "Don't Pick Yi Jianlian"

Dennis Scott wants to be a General Manger someday... Start by doing your research on a player (playa) and not just bumping your gums with bad info or opinions ... 10 - 4, Sir!!! No disrespect, just truth...!!!

This guys are making statements against Yi Jianlian and they have never seen the video on this guy. I mean, the Radio Media in Atlanta is awesome but these guys are so wrong on this subject matter.

Yi Jianlian is a **STAR** and the HAWKS Fans are about to taking to another level "Global Thinking"...

Later...,
Dou... Crenshaw, Sr.

It is no doubt that the Hawks need a point guard and a solid big man/center type. Maybe... Hopefully, the team's draft day misfortunes and overall poor decision making is history now. All one has to do is look at the 1985 draft and all the future stars/legends the Hawks missed out on by drafting Jon Koncak with the fifth overall pick. Perhaps our team should just play it safe by picking either the best available point or big man at #3 and pick the other position player at #11. I would not be against a draft day trade that would help fill their needs by creating salary cap space making them a player in the free agent market.

Posted by: zack on June 24, 2007 12:13PM EST
he is a great 11th pick for us he is the best of the pg's that can finish around the basket

Posted by: wes d on June 24, 2007 2:32PM EST
listen people!!!!!!

We DON'T NEED ANOTHER YOUNG POTENTIAL PLAYER.WE NEED A VETERAN.
Package the #3 pick to Indiana 4 Oneal or try for Zack Randolph of the Trailblazer. Any way it goes we need a postup & defense forces in the middle. If that is possible then reach for crittenton at the #11 pick

Posted by: Quan on June 24, 2007 9:52PM EST
Yi Jianlian at #3 and then Crittenton at #11. just my two cents.

Posted by: Mehmet on June 25, 2007 3:19AM EST
Hawsk will have good players from this draft, but Hawsk must test C.Akyol who selected 2 years ago in 2nd draft pick. Now he is 20 years and selected one of the best players in U20 Euro Teams Champ. last year. He has good skills and useful for Hawks as forward.....

Posted by: Shannon on June 25, 2007 11:06AM EST
#3 Horford #11 Crittenton

Posted by: CALi on June 25, 2007 3:12PM EST
The Hawks need to go with Conley at #3 and hope for Noah at #11. This will be a perfect fit for the Hawks. The Hawks are best suited as a running team and are in desperate need of a distributor. Conley is that man and with Noah in the paint with Josh we have a much better presence down low because they are both shot blockers. Both Noah and Conley will bring great energy and both have parents who were professional athelete. That means that they will work on their craft and expect excellence.

Posted by: Stevo on June 25, 2007 5:08PM EST
Horford at #3 and Acie at #11 they will both be beasts Yi will do nothing at the next level he has had his struggles in China and will take a while to develop and we have no time to wait for him with Dwight Howard and Shaq in our division we need someone who can make a consistent impact from day one and by the way Crittenton is just going to bust he should have stayed in school if he did and had gotten a little more experience and better with turnovers and emotions then I would say it was obvious he is our pick. He needs another year in college before he is ready to be a PG and lead a NBA offense especially if we want to make it a potent offense and climb out of the cellar in the areas of scoring that we have been in the last few years.

Posted by: jd on June 25, 2007 7:10PM EST
Yi at 3 and law or crittention at 11. Yi is a man among boys in this drat and he would eat horford alive. Horford is just another sheldon williams and does not even move well with the ball in his hands. Yi would kill him in one on one !!!!!
NBA players have played against YI in international play and they are in awe of this stud !!!!
Yi is the best player after Oden and Durant and may turn out to be a better all around player than both of them. He has that kind of star potential. Horford has no star potential just another good role
player. Take YIIIIIIIIIIII and Win Games!!!!!

I say trade the 3 and 11 plus josh smith and speedy claxton to the supersonics and draft kev. durant and sign c. billups. with the nucleus left behind we will definitely make the conf. semi finals in 08. ya dig?!!

Posted by: Theodore CoCo Bullard on June 25, 2007 11:54PM EST
Please use the draft picks to get us a veteran center like marcus camby and try hard to get chauncy billups. Thats a championship team. Billups would love to move to atlanta because he have two daughters who would fall in love with the city and the shopping here is better for his wife. listen to me we can make this happen Then we can cut the dead weight off of the roster, Este, Speedy, Wright, OVERRATED AJ. P.S. play salim before his contract is up and he go somewhere else and prove to be a scorer. And don't listen to any of the AC Law fans because he ain't better than salim

Posted by: ATLien on June 26, 2007 2:15AM EST
THEY SHOULD GET AL HORFORD AT #3 AND ACIE LAW AT #11, IF HE GET STRONGER, LAW WOULD BE READY FOR THE NBA NOW, CONLEY GOT A LOT MORE WORK TO DO, AND SO DO CRITTENTON..IF THEY DRAFT CONLEY AT #3 THEN THAT WOULD NOT BE SMART BECAUSE IT MIGHT NOT BE ANY GOOD CENTERS LEFT

Posted by: Jarvis Cade on June 26, 2007 7:41PM EST
I think you should draft Mike Conley Jr. He's the best point guard in the draft. Get him before he's taken.

Posted by: Anonymous on June 27, 2007 12:40AM EST
Horford and Law!!! Horford can post up and Law can shoot under pressure. I like Yi. View his videos on You Tube. A 7'0 that can take the ball from end to end like a guard and finish decisively. He is incapable of posting up, though. His skills are moving away from the basket. Good shooter from 18'. No one knows his exact age, though. Some say he is in his mid-20s.

the hawks should get horford at #3 and crittenton at #11, but they dont need to sign mo williams because that might just end up being a waste of money like claxton was, they still have Tyronne Lue who was the hawks most clutch player last year

Posted by: Traybo on June 27, 2007 4:23PM EST
Mann Javaris is da truth if the hawks pass up they will b sorry.

Posted by: LiL G on June 27, 2007 11:44PM EST
I belive the hawks should get Horford at 3 and javaris at 11 or get another bigman like if noah is avaliable

I think we should try to trade our third pick to seattle for Rashard Lewis. They will want to move Rashard to make room for Durant. I would move Josh Smith to the 4 spot. He is only 22 and I noticed how much bigger he is getting. He is at 225 now and could probably carry another 15 lbs. With his Athleticism he would do fine around the basket and the range on his jumper would be an asset (15 to 18 feet) and put him in position to block shots. Rashard would give us a 6'10 small forward that can score with 3 pt range on his jumper and would take pressure off Joe Johnson. It would also give us a veteran. This would give us a little more room to take chances on pick 11. I like Javaris at this pick because he is big andatheletic and matches up well with Eastern conference contending teams PGs size wise and the truth is Speedy will start next year no matter which PG we pick because we pay him to much to sit the pine. So Javaris would have time to develop without pressure. However this would also allow us to take a chance on one of the remaining big man at the 11th pick. This squad would be fun to watch and have a hometown player fan base.

Take Conley at #3. Trade #11 pick and a 1st round pick from next year and Zaza for Greg Oden. Conley and Oden would work well together. You would get a big man and a PG, both who play very well.

Take Conley a 3. Trade #11 pick, next years first round pick and Zaza for Oden.

Will the Hawks make the playoffs will they please fire their trainer who goal is to prevent injuries thats they key to Atlanta Success the Bottomline. Next, will the Hawks win more then 40 games.

Hawks will never really win big until Joe Johnson learns how to play without the ball. He never shoots in rhythm after receiving the ball off a screen or double screen. He has to stop and let his defender catch up and size him up which he does until the double team arrives. Becasue you can't play Joe along with Lue (as Lue looks mostly for his own shot same as Joe), Joe Johnson forced Marvin into a 2 guard role as when the ball goes to Joe he becomes a one guard and the ball never goes anywhere else. This absolutely killed our offensive rebounding as if Chills wasn't bringing the ball up, there was one short to rebound. What did Marvin get 5 rebounds per game... come on wasn't he a low post banger at UNC?. At least drafting Law will allow all the post players to remain in the post. It is an admission that a true point guard is a total waste on this team with ball-hog, time-suck Joe. I guess if you are trying to play with the hand you are dealt the picks were a good job, but basically until you reeducate Joe this team will not go anywhere. Watching last year there was a stretch where Joe's lack of ability to shoot in rhythm off plays was causing a real problem and
Woody got him to try to shoot in rhythm which he did for about 3 or 4 games before going back to size-em up Joe style. Perhaps Law will allow you to limit Joe's playing time to the point where his deductions could be minimized and he could actually make a true positive contribution.

Sheldon plays much better with his back to the basket and it showed in April when he won rookie of the month. He is your back up center regardless of size.

You will have to do something other than run the offense through Joe cause it will be painfully clear this coming year that it doesn't work regardless of how much defensive power you add as the offense is not balanced..
