Competition Heats Up For Final Summer League Roster Spots
Posted by: Micah Hart on July 11, 2007 at 4:03PM EST

It is the middle of the NBA off-season, but the Hawks practice court is bustling with activity this week as the Summer League team works out in preparation for the Rocky Mountain Revue. The first round of cuts was made yesterday, leaving 17 names on the roster that will most likely be trimmed to 12 or 13 before the team departs for Salt Lake City tomorrow. Draft picks Al Horford and Acie Law IV are getting used to the NBA style of play, and to the slight variation of rules. "The shot clock definitely, and we have more plays here now." said Horford, "It's just a matter of time of getting used to it." Law agreed that his biggest challenge would be "getting used to the speed of the game, making that adjustment as a point guard."

Along with the draft picks and returning second-year players Shelden Williams and Solomon Jones, there are many recognizable names among those battling make the trip west...

Guards Jarrius Jackson (19.9 ppg in 2006-'07) from Texas Tech and Derek Raivio (18 ppg, 96% from the foul line) from Gonzaga top the list of undrafted players that wrapped up their college careers this past spring.

There are also a number of players coming off of successful seasons overseas this past year. Teddy Gipson, a former college teammate of Joe Johnson's at Arkansas, scored over 14 points per game in Germany, while Brion Rush (Grambling State, 2003-'06) scored 20.1 ppg in Italy.

The only player with NBA experience other than Shelden and Solo that is participating in camp this week is Devin Green, who played 27 games for the Lakers in 1006-'07 before splitting time in the D-League and overseas this past year.

The current roster also features the top two finishers from the State Farm Slam Dunk Contest that was held here in Atlanta as part of Final Four weekend this past season, and both have local ties. Mario West, the dunk champion from Douglasville, Ga., and Brent Petway, the runner-up from McDonough, Ga., were two of five players invited by the Harlem Globetrotters to try out for their team this fall. West played here in Atlanta for Georgia Tech last season, while Petway played for Michigan.

Left: Two high flyers Brent Petway (25) and Mario West (6) battle in a defensive drill.
Right: Former college standouts Jarrius Jackson (in white) and Acie Law IV (4) go head-to-head.

I'm glad we have talented players going to Salt Lake City. Can't wait to see Air Georgia dunk on someone in the Summer League. Mario West gonna look good too. Jarrius Jackson will be hitting those 3 points. Derek Raivio will also hit those 3's. We also can't forget about Solomon "Mr. Shotblocker" Jones, Shelden "The Landlord" Williams, Al "Rookie of the Year" Horford, and Acie "Captain Clutch" Law.

YEA! Now we have to realese some of the guys on our roster to make room for some of these guys

It will be wonderful if Air Georgia can earn a permanent home in the ATL, his home state. He is a great kid with tremendous potential and will be a refreshing boost for a team on the brink of becoming great.

I agree it's good to see some really good talent going to Utah. Air Georgia is just what the Hawks need coming off the bench. He's the energy that every team needs. He's a shotblocking dunking machine.

I like your nickname of Law, William!

I can't wait to see our guys in Summer League, I'm expecting great things this year. I feel like that T.I. song... "Big Things Poppin"

The Hawks are going into the summer league with great talent. How did all the other rookies excluding Hoford and Law make the hawks team. Like Mario West, J. Jackson, and so on? Is there more than 2 rounds in the nba draft? I am really curious can someone explain.

Posted by: Widly on July 12, 2007 3:46PM EST
Richard, those players where people who didn't get picked in the NBA draft and are now trying to earn there way to a roster spot by working in the summer league. Great draft and gl 2 the atl hawks.

When are we going to be able to buy the new jerseys? My brother told me they were not going to be available until October and that sounded nuts. If that's the case this ownership group needs a make over. How can you promote a team if you don't have jerseys to see before the season starts?

Earl Calloway is a heck of a point guard.

I went to high school with West, and I'd really like to see him stick in the NBA. He took us from being not at all relevant in any sports to a top 10 team in state his senior year. He never dominated games in college like he did in high school, which was a bit disappointing; he's a hard-nosed and very athletic player, and should have been an ideal college SF. It never quite panned out Tech. The problem is that he doesn't really have an NBA position. He plays like a forward but he doesn't have the size. He's listed at 6'5 but I think that's generous. If he's going to stick in the NBA, it's as a defensive sub to come in and guard smaller 1s like Felton. But I'm also really looking forward to seeing how Law handles the summer league.

Earl Calloway should be the next point guard

Posted by: Mark on July 13, 2007 9:50PM EST
Atlanta Hawks fans: you have your starting Point/Lead guard for this year and the future in Acie Law. He will also be a LEADER for your team. I went to Texas A&M and Law will win your hearts with unbelievable play. I watched him for 4 years get better and better and better. He is strong in all areas of the game. I have heard some question if he is quick and fast enough to guard the league's best. The answere is YES. Acie will get steals as he is deceptive with anticipating what his opponent will try to do next and very good with his hands. His offensive game is an all around game with many weapons he will use against opponents. He can shoot from all over the basketball court - drive and finish with either hand, tear drop floater in lane and on side of lane with either hand, pull up mid range jump shot, uses the glass, uses the rim to shield off blocks from would be shot blockers and will drain three pointers with taller defenders draped all over him with the shot clock or game clock running out. And when he draws double teams Acie will get the ball to your extraordinary athletic big men and forwards. Josh Smith is gonna love Acie and vice versa. They will be fun to watch together as well as Horford and William(s) will get easy dunks and finishes via timely threaded passes of all kinds from Acie.

Don't know who Earl Calloway is but he can't take over the starting job from Law. Acie has all the leadership intangibles that are necessary from your Lead Guard/Quarterback to put yourself in position to win games and have a winning mentality for your team.

Mike Conley Jr will make a fool out of a lot people because no one in the league will be able to guard him. He's the best dribbler, penetrater and he will become the best passer since Magic Johnson. BK and company can't see it now, but they made a bad decision when they passed on Mike Conley Jr.

If given the opportunity, keep your eye on Terrance Thomas. Living in Dallas he was the anchor for the Flyers this season. The Flyers were one of the best teams in the NBDL last season with alot of call ups. Azubike(Warriors), Jeremy Richardson (Hawks, Blazers) Luke Schenscher(Blazers)and Popsu and Ager (Mavs). He is 6’8 w/ handles like Isiah, crossover like Iverson, boards like Rodman and he shoots the long ball exceptionally well. He kept the Flyers hovering right at the top all season. He also recorded a triple double and came close on several other occasions.

Before theFlyers, he was averaging 37ppg, 18rpg in the top European League. No matter where you are from 37and 18 anywhere is balling, your local YMCA Included. The Flyers Coach didn’t know what he had until after 1/3 of the season had passed. So the D-League stats don’t Show you everything. However a Triple Double in the NBDL and 14 double doubles from the SG and SF position this past season is again, Ballinggggg.

Hey Tony, the Hawks made a mistake by not taking Conley, lol, the moderator of this blog expained it and u still don't understand. If we had taken Conley who could we have taken at the #11 spot. Don't tell me Al Thorton because we already have Josh Smith who is just an NBA Beast. We couldn't taken a big man because after the Spencer Hawes, Al Horford and Greg Oden were gone, there really is not a good big man left. And also whats up with the stupid stats, if u want the stats I'll give them to u. Mike Conley is averaging a shade under 11 PPG but in Acie opener he had 11 points, seems as though they might have the same PPG for the season. Mike Conley=3.5 Rebounds Per Game Acie Law's opener= 5 Rebounds, therefore Acie might just become a better rebounder in the league. And Mike Conley & Acie had the same number of assists. But u 4got one crucial stat tony, Mike Conley averaged 42.5 minutes, but Acie Law only had 28:27 minutes in his summer league debut. I rest my case, the Atlanta Hawks did a good job when they drafted and signed Acie Law over Mike Conley.

Acie Law = NBA star
Mike Conley Jr. = backup PG to #4 at all star game

Give Craig Brashaw more minutes! I have watched him play in New Zealand for New Zealand he is a smooth fast 6 11 center/forward with range and a great attitude. If you add this guy to your roster he will be invaluable offensive asset off the bench from the perimeter to the paint!

Widley, first and foremost - strengthening your team statistics year in and year out is the way to build a championship caliber team. The hawks needed to improve their FG%(28th) and Assist%(26th) on offense. A true point guard would have improved those areas tremendously - plus, a true point guard is the most important position in the NBA because he is regarded for his assist totals and setting up plays on the court. A true point guard is the QB or FACILITATOR in the NBA. Memphis could have taken Yi, Noah, Corey or Acie Law with their 4th pick, but they took Mike Conley Jr because they know that he is a game changer and he will create havoc for opposing teams. Lebron James kept encouraging Daniel Gibson throughout the playoffs to create plays for the team. The Cavs are now pursuing Mike Bibby. A true point guard is the hardest position to establish in the NBA. We were 22nd in the league in rebounding which is not too far off from the Spurs,Pistons, and the Suns. We needed a center so we could have taken Jason Smith(7'0) with the 11th or trade down to take Aaron Gray(7'1) and Glen Davis(6'9). Since we weren't suppose to get a pick this year, we could have traded the 11th pick for someone's 1st and 2nd picks for the 2008 draft. Since BK blew our last 4 draft picks on forwards without success, he felt that this would be his last year if he didn't draft NBA ready athletes. Don't get me wrong - I like Al Horford alot but that was not the position we needed the most. I just hope Al and Acie can bring a championship to Atlanta or at lease get us into the playoff this season since we weren't drafting for the longevity.

Conley fans need to stop sweating Acie Law and worry about Kyle Lowry. That kid has a better shot and makes good decisions at the pg spot for Memphis. And for that wise guy that mentioned Magic Johnson in the same breath as Conley you are truly sniffing paint thinner and codeine. Never mention a Hall of Famer, 50 greatest, best at the position during the golden era of the NBA and a marginal rookie in the same sentence.

Posted by: Widly on July 16, 2007 3:20PM EST
I understand what u r saying Toney and I know the purpose of the PG position but you don't have to dis Acie Law. It 's not like he is the one who made the decision for the Hawks, Billy did. And if you think that Acie isn't a pure PG then u can also say that about Jason Kidd or Steve Nash because at any given time Jason or Steve can put a 25 point game. The reason I brought up the stats was because, why compare 2 guys with the same stats, but one(Acie Law) is playing just a little more than half the other(Mike Conley). That just proves that Acie Law is more productive than Mike Conley. But you also need to remember, that Acie didn't want to take a whole bunch of shots at Texas A&M. He took shots for them to win and his sole purpose was for them to win whether it be by stealing the ball, blocking shots, or going after loose balls. Now talking about Al Horford, we heard about the trade talks that didn't occur, and so the ATL hawks were left with the draft picks. Why not get the best NBA READY player so that if you need to make a trade you have some value to give to the other team. I actually have no problem with Al Horford only if Coach Woodson will play a 4 quick offense. And i know that u (tony) are trying to think what a 4 quick offense is so I will tell you. A 4 quick offense is a style of offense that was developed due to the lack of TRUE big men like Shaq. In the 4 quick offense, you have a PG, SG, and maybe 2 SF playing along with a quick PF. A well known team that uses the 4 quick offense is the Suns. The reasoning for that type of setup is that you have a lot of speed on the court and because the Hawks are so youthful, they are able to play this style of offense if Coach Woodson would permit them to. I am not saying that Al Horford is the next Amare Stoudemire but I am saying that picking Al Horford isn't a bad idea.

Al Horford: 245 lbs. 6-10 C
Amare Stoudemire: 245 lbs. 6-10 C

Acie Law i got yo back

Posted by: BeeWard on July 16, 2007 3:43PM EST
Seriously, enough talk about Mike Conley. The draft is over and we aren't going to get him. Stop saying "The Hawks should have...". I wanted to get the Horford/Acie combo from the beginning. Sure Mike Conley would have been great, but only at one position for us. Now we got a great big man and an above-par PG... which is better than what we had before. Look at ESPN, on the NBA front page right now it is giving the Hawks praise for choosing Horford at 3. And you can't tell me that Acie isn't an instant upgrade to the other PGs we had. Seriously, our other PGs suck. The only highlights of our team last season were Josh Smith and Joe Johnson. Now hopefully we will have a highlighted PG and another highlighted PF.

Drop the Conley talk, please.

BeeWard, I am glad to announce that you are an individual with great common sense. Don't take Acie's 24 point game in a matter of 29 minutes as him taking a lot of shots because half of the points that he scored came from the line which means that he is getting contact, in which the Hawks desperately needed. It's just like Acie said, if he is asked to a distributor, he will do it, if a scorer is missing (Horford-will play Thursday), he will step up and take the responsibility. Whatever you want on the NBA court, he can do it.

LET'S GIVE A ROUND OF APPLAUSE TO SHELDON WILLIAMS. A 20 POINT GAME, 50% SHOOTING, AND 9 REBOUNDS. HE MIGHT JUST BE TAKING A STEP TO BEING A CONTRIBUTION ON THE HAWKS TEAM.

Posted by: nothing on July 16, 2007 10:36PM EST
I am returning to Atlanta tomorrow and I would like to congratulate our GM for picking HORFORD at #3 who failed to impress in the summer leagues. One thing for sure, he will never be a real good player. S Williams is way better than him.

Wow, good job GM! Anyway Acie is kinda nice but not really that good but for #11 he is a good pick.

I can't believe why the HAWKS didn't pursue Zach Randolph.

I was yelling here that Zach will soon be traded by Portland and he was indeed traded for Stevie whose contract has been bought out by Portland meaning he will not play for Portland at all. What a waste! Atlanta has more to offer than New York.

And I can't believe that they didn't picked Yi who had a more impressive showing in the Summer League than Horford.

You know what?!

We have wasted 3 good consecutive drafts. I don't think the Hawks will win in the east with a guy named Horford and I think he will just be another #3 pick who will become a bench player in the future.

Nothing, that says a whole lot especially because you don't know anything. Sheldon Williams in the Summer League is playing like a whole 10 more minutes than Horford, and Horford is shooting 50% each time, w/ 7 or 8 points and about 6 minutes. Sheldon Williams, played the worst and most stupid in basketball games I have ever seen. He could not contest shots when a PG was going right to him, and when a F or C went towards him, Sheldon would just get a little contact the barely shook the player allowing the the easily get a 3 point play. Sheldon "the Landlord" Williams PSYCHE, he should just leave playing basketball to his girlfriend Candace Parker.

NOTHING YOU NEED TO WATCH SOME GAME FOOTAGE OF SHELDON WILLIAMS AS A HAWK.

Posted by: nothing on July 17, 2007 5:46PM EST
ANONYMOUS, I have been watching their games. In fact, I know that Horford made 9 pts and 8 reb (or is it vice versa. I don't care cause its forgettable in the summer leagues) in one of his last outing and I also know that he didn't do well in his other summer outings.

And there is a reason why he has been playing few minutes lately. Either he is injured (which sources say its just and not that severe at all) and the fact that S Williams made consecutive 20+ pts and 9+ rebs during that sprint. I think you are the one that is not watching or reading articles about the summer leagues at all.

I am very sure, and in fact, I am betting that Sheldon Williams will get that starting position at PF this coming season and Horford will come out from the Bench.

And next year, I will blast the HAWKS Management for not being able to trade for Zach when we have more to offer than New York and for picking HORFORD at #3.

Anyway, I am still a fan and I hope that our next years draft (I know we will still end up with a top 5 or 10 draft with this lineup next year) will finally be GOOD!

Can't wait to see my BRAVES (I'm very hopeful that they will win) and HAWKS (I'm praying that we can get #1 pick next year because we keep on messing it up!) in action.

Posted by: BeeWard on July 18, 2007 9:56AM EST
nothing: here is a page on ESPN that I think might get you to shut up about how much Horford sucks.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?page=rockymountainday2

I thought you said you read all the articles buddy? Also, the only reason that Sheldon would start before Horford is because of experience.

Also, I thought we didn't have any first round picks so far... I thought we lost them due to trades and whatnot. Maybe I'm wrong though...

we do not haver a first round pick next year. it goes to the suns for the joe johnson trade. the only way that we got our pick this year was because it was top 3 protected. our pick next year goes to the suns because it is not protected. but to tell you the truth i would have rather our pick been #4 this year and the pacers bick been #10 because with the two picks that we got this year are horrible. originally i was hgoping that we would get two first rounders this year but we got two nobodys when we could have really have helped our team. next year we will not have a chance to get any of the good PGs that are going to be in the draft. i just hope that we have a good season so that we will not have to have another all star pg be stolen away from the hawks finger tips . so thank you billy knight for f*****g up for the how many straight years .

some one,
what the hell, horford and law are just fine. Law in the past 3 games has done great and horford if it wasnt for the ankle would also be doing great. horford and law are not nobodys. Acie has only played 5 games and he has started to prove he is a leader. Horford has only played 3 and has already proved to be a good contributer. Over the past three games law has led in points and assists twice. So just shut up and quit complaining.

Posted by: Andre on July 20, 2007 4:04PM EST
hold up some one. how can you say that they are nobodies. you gave no reason on why they are nobodies. you must not like Florida or Texas A&M, cause that is the only reason that you would call them nobodies, since they are doing so well.
And if that is the case just don't come on here being a buzz kill for all of us that are excited about next season. We got a good inside threat by drafting Horford, and we got leadership and a Great PG by drafting Law. When we look back in a few years it will probably more clear to you that law and horford were all around the best picks for Atlanta.

Also Law can distribute the ball and score and there is nothing wrong with that. The greates point guards cant score as well as distribute. ( nash, parker, billups, and kidd )

Posted by: Andre on July 20, 2007 4:06PM EST
damn it i messed up at the bottom i meant the greatest pg's CAN score as well as distribute

you shut up horford and law suck. horford is just like a person that is already on our roster... sheldon williams and law is not a true PG he is a combo guard at best. he does not have the speed and quickness that it takes to be a PG. he was a stupid pick he reminds me of another member on the roster... salim stoudamire. he is a combo guard as well. they are both two small and play the 2 and are not good enough to be a PG. back to al horford he was not even the best player on his team. and people keep saying tha we got veteran leadership with acie we didnt the only reason he stayed four years in college was he was not good enough to come out early. he had one good year on a crappy team and noe he is going to come in and lead the hawks to the playoffs... yeah right. the hawks draft reminds me of a draft that happened earlier this year the falcons. the did the same thing they drafted a guy that had a decent first three years in his college career and had a good senior season and the go ahead andf drafted him. both players had fluke senior seasons and both will probably be busts. but i do hope that acie proves me wrong and takes the hawks to the playoffs but i highly doubt it. we should have drafted someone likr yi or conley jr at three and traded our#11 to denver because there was talk that they would give up camby for 11 and next years second rounder but it looks like billy knight f****** up again but ishure do hope not

and if i was to take a poll and see how many people would rather have law and horford or jianlian/conley jr and camby i know that the vote would favor the second option instead of the two unproven draft pick busts that we are stuck with now

Posted by: Champ on July 22, 2007 4:35PM EST
Earl Calloway has all of the things needed to be a NBA point guard. You see when he started he gave them 19 points. Louis had 28 but rarely scored on Earl. Acie Law is cool but he has positive hype around his name so everything he does they will try to make it seem that much better. Now the only problem I have is Derek Ravio! He has been hyped forever but doesnt produce, doesnt control the game and Earl locked him up both times they played in college. This is the pros now and he has nothing to bring to the table. Sorry Ravio. Earl is what you would call a "diamond in the rough" a "hidden jewel", what every scout is looking for; he plays hard everytime and has a great character. Defensviely he gives players headaches and offensively cant be contained because of his quickness (but he is under control). The hawks should pay closer attention to details and his impact on the team. Great player

Posted by: aj on July 22, 2007 10:27PM EST
some one

dude acie law and horford were smart picks. they both did good in summer league. Acie law had less minutes and still put up more assists in 5 games the conley jr. and the better teams in the nba have pgs that can score and rack up assists

Posted by: tarheel on July 23, 2007 2:44PM EST
hey someone please SHUT UP. Never write again because you are a LOSER.

I might be just a stupid north carolina fan but i believe that Texas A&M ( the team law played for)
made it to the sweet 16 last season so i don't know why you called them crappy. You probably are a longhorn fan that is jelaous or mad or something but you are annoying the hell out of me. Conley sucks and if you really want to worship conley jr. then move to memphis and root for memphis cause conley jr. is not coming to atlanta anytime soon.

also horford will get better and Law is already good.
you have no proof in saying conley jr. is better than law, all i have seen so far is law doing better then conley jr. in POINTS and ASSISTS .

so someone just stop writing, leave this blog alone cause nobody cares what your lonley ass has to say cause all you do is put this team down.

Posted by: someone on July 24, 2007 3:12PM EST
tarheel you are the loser and so is everybody else that thinks that al horford ang acie law were the best fits four our basketball team so why dont you shut up because our draft picks are not going to help our team they were the stupidest picks we could have made. my proof that conley jr is better is that he help carry his team to the championship game did law do that for his team no he did not. i know that you are gonna say that he had greg oden so what he did but if you recall oden was in foul trouble alot during the tournament and was hurt for the early part of the year so conley did take his team on his shoulders when he needed to. did law even lead his team to the big 12 championship? back to horford granted his team won back to back titles but he was not great the first time that they won it and the only reason that his name was brought to the publics eye was because he had a decent game against oden who was in foul trouble. so he was a big stretch a #3 he might be good later on in his career but he definatley weill not be great for the hawks in the near future. i dont think that he should have been a top seven pick and law should not have been a lottery pick. the point guard that we should have taken at 11 was javaras crittenton he has a much bigger upside than law. law has reached his maximum potential and crittento is just developing. the reason why i said that the aggies were crappy was that in laws first season they did not even get a win and his second and third seasons were not much better and in his senior season he made a lucky big shot here or there to win some games and they made it to the sweet 16. now that law has left why do you think that the former head coach of the aggies left as soon as they lost in the tournament...because they are going to suck next year. oh yeah who was the guy that choked to lose the game in the sweet 16 oh yeah that was law so please tarheel shut up and get off this blog because horford and law might be good players in the nba but they will never be superstars oh yeah who ever said that conley will back up law in the all star game is stupid first of all because law will never be an all star and conley will be a multi time all star and secondly law is in the east and conley is in the west so before you get back on this blog make sure that you learn the difference between the eastern and western conference come on now its not that hard

Posted by: Andre on July 24, 2007 10:29PM EST
Please Shut Up someone

My good friend NOTHING left for Atlanta two weeks ago and like me. We didn't appreciate how the picks went.

NOTHING has a point... We should have traded our #3 and #11 for Zach, we have more to offer than New York. And that goes for KG too...

SOMEONE also has a point, Yi or Conley would have been better at #3.

I think a lot of bloggers here doesn't understand the meaning of CRAP...

Well, I think you should bcoz we have 2 crappy picks right now... HORFORD and LAW...

Although Law did show flashes of brilliance, I don't think he will be a great player. I'll BET $100,000 on that (Anyone willing?)...

As for Horford?..... Well he just plainly sucks. a big disappointment for the #3 pick. And I am very sure like NOTHING was before me... This guy is a future BENCH PLAYER...

For those who don't remember:

Me and NOTHING were advocates of trade for ZACH, KG, JERMAINE, or PAO. Back then when the #3 and #11 picks were still a mystery.

And sure enough KG and ZACH were traded(what a loss since we have more to offer than NY and Boston)

We have different #3's though in case the picks didn't went through (which didn't). His is Yi while mine is Conley...

Anyway, I hope the BLOGGERS here would come to their senses and ACCEPT the TRUTH that..

HORFORD SUXS (oh please, just accept the truth!)...

AL (just an average player.. not exceptional!)...

HORFORD SUCKS!!!

LAW is fine w me, though i agree dat he is not dat exceptional but 4 #11 he is a great pick...

i really think our #3 should hav been dat China Man or Conley...

Anyway we still have dat potential future first round draft pick to look forward to right?
